"to flee the Florida heat and hurricanes." When I wrote The Greatest Road Trip Ever Taken" (available on Amazon) I talked to a couple who had planned for years to retire in Florida. About two weeks in and they had enough of the humidity AND THE BUGS! Oh my goodness the bugs in Florida could have saddles and fly you to South Carolina.

I'll be honest here (I lie everywhere else. Can't trust me as far as you can throw me), I'm worried about Bo. I know that he will make some spectacular plays on the ground and through the air, but I know he has a tendency to make that one, "What the %$%*&% is he thinking?" throw.

(To the healthcare comment from Notalot.) True that. A good hospital within an hour's drive is essential. I get twice monthly infusions for a condition that I have. As far as climate, I'm hearing a lot of comments about places that are HOT, HOT, in the summer. Don't want that. I know some want year-round warmth. Not me.

The Andy Griffith Mayberry was based on a small town in the Blue Ridge mountains named Mt. Airy. N.C.
The area is offline, but generally between Charlotte, N.C. and Roanoke, VA. The surrounding area has comparatively reasonable costs-of-living. rolling vistas, a mild climate, generally good schools ( do your research), and enjoys steady growth.
Nearby Galax, Virginia is the home of the national Old-Time Fiddler's convention.
I now live in South Carolina. Regarding the South, the past 10 years has brought enormous growth to the more desireable locales and popular cities. Demand for housing since 2019 is off the charts with housing prices responding accordingly.
Where the comparable value is not what it once was, buyers moving from high priced markets in the NW and NE find considerable value and cost savings with huge tax savings here.
There are very low-priced pockets, but buyer beware. We know the economy is squirrely now. Some will score opportunities and some will suffer.
What lifestyle do you want? Are you culturally adaptable,? How much tolerance to risk do you have?
There is more to life than money, but an affordable and well-liked domicile and locale adds a lot. Don't forget access to healthcare as you consider retirement as you will need more doctors and possibly specialized practices than in your younger years.
I visited Mt. Airy as a way to kick off this search for Mayberry. That was twenty years ago. I'm enjoying reading about the international places, but my Mayberry will be within the United States.

I will definitely check out the channel for reviews. We had Seaside in the mix for a while, but there is no direct access to a major airport without a private car. Astoria has an occasional shuttle to PDX, but Astoria doesn't quicken our heart as Seaside does. Rents are a bit steep in Seaside, too.

To me it is a no-brainer that we accept an NIT bid, and do it with a smile on our face. If we don't, we are just like teams that disdain lower-profile bowl games. I have a name for teams like that, and it violates the "So ten-year olds can read it" rule.

I am an unabashed fan of the big redhead as an announcer. I'm not a Blazer fan so I don't swoon over him there, except to say that I've never admired anyone's outlet passes as much. But as an announcer, two thumbs up (and one thumb up for Dick Vitale.)

I've always believed it was terribly arrogant of teams to skip bowl games and NIT berths. We are getting what we deserve. Don't worry, I doubt we will last past the first weekend.

Great article, Jon. It's always fun to hang out with the smart people here. One thing, though. You said there are 1,000 players in the portal. I heard the other day that there are 2,000! Ten years ago who would have thought that the two most important words in college football are now "transfer portal" and NIL. It is a different world. While I don't believe the Ducks are headed into the Ivy League model, we are certainly barrelling down a road with little in the way of headlights.

I am a great believer in in-game momentum. It was momentum that carried Keenan Howry through the savage storm and into the end zone. It was momentum that carried Bill Musgrave (all 4.95/40 of him) into the end zone at frozen Independence Stadium in Shreveport.
Where I believe momentum is overblown though, is when it is game-to-game rather than in-game. I have seen too many NFL teams (usually the ones that I have wagered on) come into a game on a three-game winning streak only to lay a 60-minute egg.

. I too have questions about the direction of this team, and would have had REAL questions if the "former player letter" had turned into the hiring of a mediocre coach of a mediocre team. Would we have been surprised if we had ended up being mediocre? But, I can't imagine what it would take for me to add an "I guess" to Go Ducks.

This has all been on our last nerve for a week. In that time, a few encampments developed.
1. Our feelings were so hurt because of MC's betrayal. Only Justin Wilcox could make us feel good again. "Make sure it's an Oregon guy." I can't stand to be jilted again.
2. So sick and tired of the Bo Schembechler offense. MC held down our offense better than anyone since Gene Chizik. It's Chipper or nothing!
3. He has to have years of proven head coaching experience. C'mon! When has Oregon hired ANYONE like that?
Those are the major encampments. Since Coach Lanning doesn't have proven bona fides for any of that there has been more grousing about the hire than I anticipated. So, take a day and come back to Fishy with an improved attitude and a willingness to row this boat over the finish line. LET'S get fired up! I AM FIRED UP!

I wanted P.J. Fleck before the Slick Willie hire. I think he should be given consideration now. He can talk butter on to toast and would be great at keeping our current recruits in the fold.
Besides, who doesn't want to see "Row" on the plastic brand piece on the front of our helmets.

At least two or three times today I have read either "Let's get Mark Helfrich" or "The Ducks stupidly fired the one coach who wanted to stay here forever," or words to that effect. Helfrich was the worst coach we have ever had...when you actually give Chip the credit for his teams!
Look, my feelings are terribly hurt today, but turning to a coach just because he is from Oregon is ludicrous! Also, wanting a Natty is NOT a bad thing. It's a very good thing and I, for one, will not rest easy until we get one. Let's get a coach that will show Mario Cristobal what we could have been!

I also don't want to see us reach out to another coach, in desperation, who will then just leave like the last two. Maybe we had something magical with Bellotti, but a west coast guy who likes the area is a must for me. We shouldn't be desperate, but time is of the essence and the clock is ticking.
I also admit I would find it more acceptable hiring a qualified Oregon alumni, rather than somebody from Florida or any school without a west coast connection. I will own that bias. I would also add one of the reasons Smith is doing so well at OSU is he is from OSU, can sell the magic of OSU. Wilcox could do the same at Oregon.
Did I just read "the magic of OSU?"
