How Much Did Oregon Gain/Lose From the Portal?

Recommended Posts

It was an interesting article by Jarrid Denney of On3, ScoopDuck, looking at the 30 players who left via the portal, versus the 14 who came to Oregon in terms of experience. (Snaps) As you know, starters don't transfer out, and you are receiving transfers who were rarely starters, although we do have some who left their prior school following injury.

Below are a couple of examples from the article demonstrating how we equaled or upgraded the experience at the position with some conclusions.

Left: Dont’e Thornton (WR)    306
New:Traeshon Holden (WR) Alabama    308

Left: Moliki Matavao (TE)    335
New: Casey Kelly (TE) Ole Miss    386

Left: Dawson Jaramillo (OL)    77
Left: Bram Walden (OL)    2

New: Ajani Cornelius (OL) Rhode Island    720
New: Nishad Strother (OL) East Carolina    923

Left: Seven McGee (WR)    101
New: Tez Johnson (WR) Troy    350

Left: Bradyn Swinson (EDGE)    144
New: Jordan Burch (EDGE) South Carolina    771

Total for All Who Left:

Total snaps played    2,470
Average snaps played per season    82.33

Totals for All Who Joined Us:

Total snaps played    5,756
Average snaps played per season    411.14

Wowsa.  Talk about addition by subtraction and fantastic recruiting!  Danno did book'em!  This is a massive upgrade that normally would have taken years for Oregon to achieve via HS recruiting and development.  This is why the Ducks have the chance to be GREAT this fall!

Calm Down Charles!

Hopefully with Gonzo we saw a little of what we will see this year. I also think players saw what Gonzo did by transferring to Oregon and want to replicate this. The only caveat, they need to understand the work it took to make that leap.

Charles I echo your enthusiasm with what Lanning has done and raise you one.

And the 'Danno booked 'em' reference is golden.

Quality, and filling the right holes and not quantity matters.

The key with Gonzo was his hard work ethic. And his relationship with coach Meat.

I'm hoping each of these transfers see Oregon as a fresh start and a chance to work hard and prove themselves.

If that's the case, they should do well and the Ducks should do very well.

This was an interesting way to compare transfers. The O-line particularly seems to have gained.

Coach DL seems to be a great attractor of talent.

If they don't work they won't start. There is plenty of talent that wants to start and that means there is loads of competition. Most of the transfers only have 1 year of eligibility on them anyways so they won't hold the roster back so much if they don't actually end up playing and being a bust. Some of the transfers have 2 years of eligibility but even then the turn over will be a whole lot higher.

Exactly. This is the UGA way that Dan will follow.
