In an actual college football playoff of the best teams in the country, Power 5 conference champions should get a bid to play in the playoff. The Pac 12 conference champion, no matter who it ends up being, should MOST DEFINITELY be in the playoff, as should the conference champions from every Power 5 conference in the nation.

The CFP, as it now stands, is nothing more than an invitational based on a beauty contest. Politics, and probably money, play far too substantial a roll in the figuring of which 4 teams end up being selected. It is a far cry from an actual college football playoff. To be an actual playoff, the field needs to expand to at least 8 teams, and probably 12 teams if you want to include everyone who truly should be included.

Who cares if Washington, who is currently 7 - 5 somehow finds the way to become the Pac 12 Champion? If they did, they would end up with 9 wins, and they would have to have beaten teams that other teams, like Oregon, lost to. In fact, they would have to beat Utah, a team the clobbered Oregon.

This is the truth.  In the NFL, Division winners have finished 7-9. In the MLB Playoffs just completed, the Atlanta Braves won 89 games and won their division, they hosted the Dodgers, who won 107 games, but finished 2nd in their division.

Winning conferences, or even divisions, is in the minutia that the Committee looks at while filling out their invitations.

I think that winning your conference should be the first step of a playoff. It works in the NFL. But I also think for that you need an expanded playoff. Then again, I don’t think that the playoff should be more than 8 teams without reducing the regular season game total.
