Jon Joseph No. 1 Share Posted January 12, 2022 The Pac-12 is fine with an 8 or 12 team playoff field; fine with the 12 team format proposed by Sankey, Bowlsby, the MW commish and the Notre Dame AD; the top 6 conference champions with the top 4 conference champs having a 1st round bye and 6 at large teams. Notre Dame, the G5, B12 and SEC are also fine with this format. The B1G wants all P5 champs to automatically qualify but is flexible. Why shouldn't it be? The B1G conference champ is not going to miss out on a 12 team playoff field. The ACC is insisting on an 8 team field with all P5 champs in the field. The other members of the playoff committee are becoming more and more frustrated with the ACC 'vetoing' playoff expansion. Why is the ACC being so stubborn? The ACC media rights deal does not expire until 2037. The only way the ACC can insist on ESPN revising the current agreement is if Notre Dame football becomes a full time ACC member. Currently, ND, except for hockey where it competes in the B1G, is a full time ACC member in all sports other than football. The ACC claiming it only wants an 8 team field because of academic reasons is a red herring. The ACC is pushing for 8 with 5 P5 champs in because if this was adopted, Notre Dame would most likely have to give up its independence in CFB in order to give it a consistent shot at being one of the 3 AL teams. The ACC is holding up expansion, the millions of additional dollars that would come with the expansion of the playoff field and a much better chance for the Pac-12 to get its champion in the playoff field. The 11 member playoff committee will meet again in the near future but B12 commish Bob Bowlsby, among others, does not believe the ACC will change course. Tandaian No. 3 Share Posted January 12, 2022 Pac 12, ACC and Big 12 all should worry how the money is split. B1G ten and SEC are already light years ahead in TV money. Having half the teams being made up of B1G and SEC could make the money situation even worse. They can have as many teams as they want, but they can't get a substancially bigger piece of the money pie. But with 4 team field and the NY6 bowls the SEC is bringing in more bank every year. $16M+ for the Cotton, Orange, Sugar Bowls + more for the championship. Pac-12 - $4M for the Rose Bowl. I believe, a theory I read somewhere, for right or for wrong, is that the ACC believes that an 8-team format will make it more likely that Notre Dame will join the ACC full-time.This because if there is an 8-team format, ND would see it as an easier path to the playoff than remaining an independent. 1 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

This also is on the ACC and the former commish who welcomed all other ND sports so ND could stay independent in 1 sport, football. The same genius who has the ACC media rights locked up through 2036. 30Duck No. 9 Share Posted January 13, 2022 I saw a while ago that the B1G Commish was holding things up because he didn't like Conference Champ getting the automatic bid, as he was afraid that a 11-1 team would be upset by a 9-3 team in the Conference Championship game, and might not have a space in an 8 game field. This is why divisions should be done away with. Oregon and Stanford should have played for the championship a couple of times instead of the winner of the South. True, but B1G commish Warren appears to be far more flexible than the ACC commish who was the AD at Northwestern. I think a 10-3 B1G champ would get one of the 6 AL bids? I don't see the B!G champ finishing behind 9 other conference champs or being ranked outside of the top 12? Divisions will go away.
