SO SWEET!  Way to go pitching, and way to go hitting at the clutch!

Hope everyone noticed the great fan support of the #2 team in the country. I’d call that pathetic at best. You know our players are amused by it.

The guy who was hitting .095 (yeah, you saw that right) stunned everyone as Jack Scanlon hit a three-run homer to make it 4-3!

That score remains at 9-8 after 5 innings, and Logan Mercado, the Ducks reliever, got a strike-out with bases loaded and starting with a 3-0 count.  Whew!

So far, Scanlon is the Player of the Game.

That 3-run scoring double by Gavin Grant was a one hopper to the wall in center right!

"small ball" is just a distant bad memory.

Waz's men have GRANDES BOLAS!

Unbelievable.  Ducks win 16-13 after being down 9-3 for the longest time.  They take the series as this is a massive win!  More when I receive the press release later!

A four-run deficit is certainly not insurmountable for these new Ducks under Coach Mark Wasikowski. It's amazing what players can do when you allow them to grind out at-bats, see a lot of pitches, and enable them to build confidence in their hitting abilities.

One of my biggest criticisms of ex-coach George Horton was that he inserted himself into a game far too often, taking the bat away from player after player, and forcing them to bunt. Horton was in effect saying to his players, "I have no confidence in your hitting." In the process, Horton gave away unnecessary outs and by playing small ball, he greatly reduced the frequency of scoring big innings.

In 2015, Horton was quoted as saying, "You're looking at a guy that believes in the bunting game." That small-minded philosophy resulted in a sixth-place conference finish that year, and in the next four years, the Ducks placed eighth, eighth, eighth, and ninth in the Pac-12.

It's pointless I suppose to bash Horton when he's been gone for three years, but my main point is that I hope the Ducks never again hire a coach who is devoted to playing small ball. Horton's Ducks had a negative run differential during his final five seasons. Yes, you need pitching and defense to win championships, but you also need to score some damned runs.

Coach Wasikowski understands the necessity for a balanced attack, and he smartly embraces hitting the long ball as an offensive weapon. His approach to the game is one that can ultimately get the Ducks to a College World Series.

Absolutely, there was a time when the Dodgers played "small ball" and the this was reflected in,

"The Dodgers had a no-hitter". "Did they win?"
