A flurry of new predictions don’t look too good when it comes to the recruitment of 5-star OT Josh Conerly.

Looks like USC will be getting him.

We will get ours; once this staff has enough time here--we will do well.

Exactly. It's the end game that matters. While I particularly don't like Conerly shoring up the OL for SC this is one player. The Ducks and Trojans will be battling for players for a long time, and as Charles said, we'll get ours.

I've heard its down to the NIL stuff... if Oregon can get close to matching USC then the Ducks can pull it off but the problem is how much is USC offering?

An interesting trend at the moment are those historical super power programs that have been struggling as of late have some boosters more than happy to throw some big money to buy players. Tennessee, USC, Texas and I would even throw Texas A&M into the mix there.

Oregon is going to spend the money needed to stay competitive but that doesn't mean they should to get into a bidding war with every recruit.

Great point, David. I agree that Oregon should do what's needed to stay competitive in this new environment. But I don't want to see Oregon going the route of just throwing $$$ at high school kids or Transfers.

Bidding wars= Players telling coaches what to do = no thanks

There’s plenty of players out there that just want to hit someone real hard and will gladly do it for the Ducks. Sign them up and pass on the bidding war guys.

For every 5 star that everyone knows about and chases, there is a Patric Chung. Senior year 16 years of age. Enrolled at Oregon at 17.

I want coaches that builds relationships, pounds the backwoods, beats the brush, puts in the hard work. If a 5 star makes all pac 12 team it’s expected, on the other hand when a 2 star makes the all pac 12 team, what’s that tell you?

With the Trojans boosters going large with a $100M+ deal for a new HC (and whatever they paid for Dye among others,) a sleeping giant with a whole lot of dough has awakened.

Buying Conerly, if it happens, will not be unique for SC in the future;  look for the same in regard to any stud on the west coast the Trojans is trying to recruit.

The Trojans finally have an AD, Cronin, who is not a former SC guy. Cronin is the guy who hired Fickell at Cincinnati. That worked out 'pretty well' as Cincy was the first G5 school to reach the CFB final 4. And it also appears that SC president Folt and the SC administration is fully behind the intent to return SC to football glory.

Riley and Texas had similar roster rankings in the B12, ahead of the rest of the B12 pack. Riley jocked UT and before losing focus in 2021, with the 'move to the SEC stuff' going on, won 4 B12 titles in a row. We all have high hopes for Coach Lanning but Dan as a head coach, has never won a P5 conference title. (As an assistant coach it's ironic that Dan won it all, but he never won a conference championship.)

I've seen a lot of critical takes regarding Cronin and Riley on the forum, but SC today is a real deal threat. It doesn't hurt the cause when ESPN and not Larry's Lost Network, is broadcasting your spring game.

Unless and until NIL is regulated, expect to have to match or surpass an SC offer for any recruit who is deciding between SC and the Ducks.

I think 'THIS' stinks. But it doesn't matter what I think.

I think with Dan Lanning and his staff, the Oregon Brand, our NIL....we will get ours and BEAT USC now and later.  Defense wins.

Listen to The Man, football gods, and AMEN!

Not to belittle in any respect your excellent comment Charles; D 'can' win, but Chicks still dig the Long Ball.

Good.  The more eyes on the Trojans, the better it will be when we beat them.  They have out-recruited us in almost forever, and while Riley is good, he is not Urban Meyer.  Lanning will be formidable in this conference--soon.

My personal fear is that getting 5* or high 4* recruits will require dumping a chest full of money to each every year.  I don't really have much faith that NIL will be fixed any time soon and we're seeing very quickly that coveted players are becoming surrounded by seedy bidding wars.  There are a limited number of high caliber blue chips out there and getting the right ones have likely become exponentially more difficult.

I think what's going to happen is that unless Oregon starts shelling out like those other schools it will fall and perpetually stay as a 2nd tier football program...one that is successful but always just slightly out of reach of CFP level.

Let's give it three years and see how it actually shakes out.  Oregon will get theirs...

In the Pete Carrol glory years, USC was a whopping 4-2 vs the Ducks. In the Chris Peterson glory years, the Fuskies where a whopping 2-5 vs the Ducks.

The Ducks will be just fine no matter what their rivals do.

Sometimes not being the last visit is tough. Would love to get him, and still might.

One thing is that I'm used to seeing crystal balls break for a school right after a visit. It may help Oregon that he's not making the decision the day after the visit. He has time to go home, sit with his family and talk it out. There is time to remember everything he thought was great about Oregon after visiting Eugene.

In other words, even if he is a USC lean there is still time for him to change his mind.

I'm having trouble with with the idea of players getting big money and then playing with the reckless abandon that I believe the best players exhibit.

If money is more important than I say stay away from OBD.

You can stay away, but I am not! Who among our players right NOW are getting big NIL money?

Nobody.

So why would we stay away from the Ducks?

This is the time to stand behind the team that is NOT getting paid, as perhaps they and other teams will be in future years.

Some people will look for reasons to not to support the team, whereas I am looking FOR reasons to support Our Beloved Ducks!

Mr FishDuck I didn't mean for us fans to stay away. I meant the players who value more money over playing for OBD. Guess I could have been a little clearer.

Cool.  Even if you had meant it the other way--all opinions are fine.  I just have to wave my Pom-Poms once in a while....

Hear hear! You have worked hard to be the most genteel pom pom waver, (with possible exceptions for Huskies jokes!) and it's a good thing.

I do agree with 1972 to the extent that I don't see OBD ending up in competition with the very high end of NIL "salaries" in the beginning of this new era, but I'm not convinced yet that this is a game changer. Even in the NFL, there are more than a few first round misses, and quite a few mid round successes. Even more important at the college level is the 'coaching up' aspect.

I saw a tweet yesterday that someone interpreted as Conerly and his father being in Eugene. Not sure it means anything, could just be passing through on the way to SC.

But I have seen stranger things than a bunch of 247 guy be totally wrong on their crystal ball predictions.

A quick surprise visit to Oregon by a recruit has led to a few of those in the past.

We are just guessing, but my bet is the schools which try and buy a championship will end up with a debacle as the focus of the 'student' athlete becomes money rather than performance. This focus will move to the dorm room, or off campus palace, with all their homeys, to the locker room, and buying of numbers, favors from those without, and then onto the field where expectations are set by how much they make.

Time will tell, but a smart parent will be wary of following this path which will undoubtedly lead one off a cliff. Hopefully the Ducks focus on those parents and the student athletes who buy into the student mindset. It isn't about making more than your teammates in college football. It is about learning how to play, lead, and get ready for life after college, which can definitely be the NFL, but is much more.

This is definitely the rehashing of a subject which hopefully won't be constant with every recruit. I won't follow the discussions if it becomes that. I will enjoy the reports of recruits, and programs falling off the cliffs these NIL deals create, not the individual projections though. That is a depressing subject, which I don't need to see gone over and over.

Not getting hopes too high, but Oregon has pulled off a lot of last minute flips with last minute visits in the past!

Apparently Josh Conerly Sr had drinks tonight with members of a SC fan site.  I think any questions have been answered.

Yeah,

While Cincinnati got to the playoffs, they were completely undeserving.  They were lucky they faced a "degraded" #1 seed in Alabama, as Georgia would've nuked the Bearcats so bad they would have left crater all over Ohio.

Cronin will do well with name brand USC.  But Cinci was a sell job with a foul smell to it for me.  You don't deserve to go just because people want Cinderella at the ball to give them false hope.

That being said, we have our work cut out for us as we have been party crashers ourselves ( though TPTB installed Nebraska to get the beatdown against Miami, and of course the refs robbed us of our most legit shot at wearing the crown).

I just hope we get to face the Trojans this year and deliver some humble pie to wreck their momentum.

Early line on opening day: UGA -13 1/2.  I hope our defense is as good as I believe they are come September.

Definitely agree Cincinnati got every benefit of the doubt last season. The Indiana team it played was bad. The Notre Dame team it beat in South Bend was overrated.

The Committee ranked ND #5 at the end of the day; like Cincy, ND played a junk schedule in 2021. ND should have lost at FSU and Va Tech. Giving up a 21 point lead in the Fiesta Bowl was not good. And of course, ND at 11-1 and not having to play a champ game got the Fiesta bid instead of 11-2 ACC champ Pitt. ND's privileged PO status needs to disappear come 2026.

I think 2L Ohio St, with all starters playing, as well as a 2L B12 champ Baylor, would both have given Bama a better game than an over-its-head Bearcats team. But we all know the second L is the PO kiss of death.

UGA -13.5? It will be very interesting to watch the direction in which the line moves closer to game day.
