Diamond Ducks Cream California 8-3--Clinch Series in Game 2

Ducks took game one of the series last night. Can they take the series today with another win?

Our Diamond Ducks play the California Golden Bears again today at PK Park at 2:00 p.m.

 

We all know that the Bears aren’t very good at baseball, but I don’t want to lampoon them too severely, because I’m afraid that one of their whiz-kid undergrads will figure out where I live, build a rocket, and send it crashing through my house, smashing it to smithereens.

 

Nevertheless, in the spirit of good, clean fun and with malice toward none, well, okay maybe a little malice, here are the

10.  You try throwing a fastball, curve, or slider with a freaking paw

Appears the game is in a "rain delay" which is somewhat surprising given the rain in last night's game.

 

Estimated to be a 15 minute delay, with first pitch at 2:20PM.

That is the "official" explanation. My unofficial sources say that one of the burlier Bears "did a big job" in the outfield.

Baseless rumor. There are no woods in the outfield. Or bases, either.

The umpires and coaches have congregated at home plate, the tarp is being removed from the pitchers mound, and it is still putting down that liquid sunshine. It never rains next door at Autzen Stadium, so it stands to reason that it never rains at PK Park?

I believe for it to be official, Don Essig needs to say it about PK Park.

1st inning;

Leadoff man for Cal hit a fly ball to left field that clears the wall for a homerun. Second batter doubles to left center field. Ayon gets a swinging strikeout. A ground ball out to second base moves the runner to third. After getting ahead in the pitch count, Ayon walks the batter to put runners at the corners. A popup to Jacob Walsh a first base gets Oregon out of the top half of the first with only one run scored by the Bears.

Bottom of the 1st inning;

Tanner Smith hit a slow roller to third base that puts him on first base with an infield single. Drew Cowley hit a line drive into the right field corner for a double with Smith holding at third base. Brennan Milone scores Tanner with a ground ball out to second base. Jacob Walsh hit another liner into right field that plates Cowley. Anthony Hall doubles down the line to left field that brings Walsh "bumbling, rumbling, and stumbling" to home, where the throw home is scored as an error as it gets by the catcher, and allowing Hall to take third base. Colby Shade hit another double down the left field line scoring Anthony Hall. Josiah Cromwick lined a single into right field that brings Shade home. Cromwick is caught trying to steal second base. It appeared that Josiah was initially safe, but his head first slide carried him beyond the base and was tagged out.

California 1 - Oregon 5

2nd inning;

Ayon gets out number one on a full count swinging strike out. The second out comes on an unassisted out ground ball at first base. A hard shot to third base goes off Drew Cowley's glove into left field and places the batter at second base. It was scored as a single and the error allowing the runner to advance. A single to right field scores the runner. The third out is recorded by the runner trying to take second on the throw home which was cut off by Jacob Walsh and his throw to second is right on target.

Bottom of the 2nd;

Gavin Grant goes down swinging on a 0-2 pitch count. Tanner Smith hit a line drive into the gap in right/center for a double. Drew Cowley hit a nubber to the pitcher and beats the throw to first base for an infield single, and Smith advancing to third. Brennan Milone hit a line drive single back up the middle, scoring Tanner Smith and putting Ducks at second and first. Jacob Walsh swings and misses at a 2-2 count for the second out. Josh Kasevich batting and a wild pitch puts Cowley at third. Meanwhile Kasevich walks on a full count to load the bases. Anthony Hall hit a high fly ball to the center fielder for the third out. Oregon clawed back the run they gave up in the top half of the inning.

Cal 2 - Oregon 6

Top of the 3rd inning;

Issac Ayon strikes out the lead off hitter. The next batter hit a double off the glove of Drew Cowley at third base. The second out comes on a fly ball to center field. A single up the middle scores the runner from second base. Ayon gets the batter looking at a called third strike to end the Bears half of the 3rd.

Colby Shade is out on a ground ball to shortstop. Josiah Cromwick flied out to right field for the second out. Gavin Grant hit a ball into right/center that he slides into second base for a two out double. Tanner Smith ends the 3rd inning on a infield ground out.

A lead off single gets erased on a double play to the next batter (1st-2nd-1st). Ayon entices the third out on a fly ball to center.

Drew Cowley strikes out swinging. Brennan Milone hit a fly ball out to right field. Jacob Walsh works a full count into a free pass to first base. Josh Kasevich hit a ground ball to shortstop that forces Walsh out at second base.

Oregon leads 6-3 after 4 innings

Isaac Ayon continues pitching for Oregon. The first batter is hit by a pitch from Ayon. The next batter is walked by Ayon. Will Coach Wasikowski stick with Ayon? A visit to the mound by pitching coach Jake Angier, and Isaac will stay in the game. A swinging strike out by Ayon gets the first out. Drew Cowley gloves a pop up just off the third base line for out number two. And Isaac Ayon gets out of the inning on a fly ball out to left field that strands Bears runners at second and first.

Anthony Hall hit a fly ball out to left field. Colby Shade batting next and the rain is coming down at PK Park. Colby grounds out to the first baseman. Josiah hit a line drive into center/right for a double. Can Gavin Grant drive Cromwick in? Nope, Grant gets called out on strikes.

Cal 3 - Oregon 6

6th inning;

Color me surprised as Isaac Ayon continues on the mound for Oregon.

Isaac rewards the coach with a lead off strikeout. A swinging strikeout gets the second out. An infield out ends the Cal top half of the inning, as Ayon only needs eight pitches in the 6th inning to record three outs.

Tanner Smith gets on base with a single into center/right. Drew Cowley at the plate with Smith on first base. Cowley singles to center field, and the Ducks have something going. Brennan Milone can't advance the runners as he hit a fly ball out to center. Jacob Walsh can do some damage as the sun has come out, but he strikes out swinging for the second out. It's now up to Josh Kasevich, but he grounds out to the second baseman and strand two runners.

Andrew Mosiello in to pitch for Isaac Ayon. Cal's leadoff batter grounds out to second base. A walk to the second Bear batter with one out. Mosiello has been falling behind in his pitch count. A hard hit ball to deep left/center is caught at the top of the fence by Tanner Smith. That would have been a homerun if not caught by Smith!

 

 

The top half of the inning ends on a shallow fly ball to left field.

Ducks half of the 7th;

New pitcher for Cal. Anthony Hall on base with a single through the right side of the infield. Colby Shade hitting for Oregon, and Anthony Hall steals second base to put him in scoring position. Shade hit a one hopper back to the pitcher for the first out. Josiah Cromwick hit a ground ball out to shortstop that advances Hall to third base. Gavin Grant is walked as I don't think Cal really wanted to give him a chance to drive in a run. But now they have to pitch to Tanner Smith who is 3 for 4 at the plate today. Grant moves to second base on a wild pitch. And Tanner Smith continues his torrid hitting this afternoon with 2 RBI single into left field.

 

California's second pitcher of the game only last 2/3 of an inning. New pitcher to face Drew Cowley, and Smith catches the Bears battery with a steal of second base. Cowley ends the seventh inning swinging at an 0-2 pitch. Oregon has extended the lead to five runs in this inning.

Caleb Sloan now pitching for Oregon. A strikeout swinging and two flyball out's to right field ends California's top of the inning.

Brennan Milone with a swinging strike out. Jacob Walsh has the second out on a ground ball to first base. Josh Kasevich gets on base via an infield single to third. Anthony Hall ends the inning on a fly ball to right field.

California 3 - Oregon 8 headed to the 9th inning.

Caleb Sloan still on the mound to face the California batters. Josh Kasevich gloves a line drive at shortstop for the first out. Sloan walks the second hitter on four straight balls off the plate. Gavin Grant catches a pop up in shallow right field and the Bears are down to their last out. A high bouncing ball back to Caleb Sloan ends the game.
