Sources: Big 12, Pac-12 Won't Partner as Talks Officially End

Recommended Posts

I think only certain teams from the Pac 12 join the Big 12 now they tried a partnership and it fell through the Pac 12 is in trouble

This is going to get scary. The PAC is clearly under Attack! Whats the advantage for Oregon here? I'm not talking about us fans and having the PAC remain together. The sheer value for Oregon, as it stands currently, is not to remain in the PAC. Sure they could win the PAC more times than not each year. But, if its on sheer opinion of who deserves to be in the play offs and not on Conference championships, then where is the advantage?

If the SEC and B1G want no auto qualifiers, it's going to be a popularity contest of 20 years ago. Sure, go undefeated and it's no problem, but lose one game and we will be on the outside looking in more times than not.

Really only 2 options in this the Pac 12 stay together for a mediocre TV Deal or the certain schools being discussed join the Big 12

Why not pluck the best of both conferences and form a new one?  Neither commissioner would be happy with that!  Bust them both up, as it appears it is "every school for themselves" at this point?

We are barely hanging in there...

Now we wait to see what comes out of ESPN and the ACC.

The sky isn't falling just yet... There are still plenty of moves to be made.

If the ESPN talks die then yes... The sky is falling at that point.

If the money wasn't there for a full merger with the Big 12 it certainly wont be for a partnership with the ACC

As long as the Pac and Big 12 still see themselves as complete conferences, I think all involved are doomed. Both conferences need to see the writing on the wall and that their time is up. Taking the best of the Pac and B12 plus the best TV markets in the Mountain West (SD St, UNLV) could make a viable conference. This new conference (BigPac) would still be third place to the BIG and SEC but it wouldn't be the far distant 4th and 5th that they both are heading towards.

There could have been more at play than just money for a merger. Schools or organizations losing some of their autonomy is always a big factor in these sorts of things.

Money is the driving force behind all of this right now but it is not the only thing being used in decision making.

If it was purely about the money then there would be only two conferences... Fox and ESPN.... It feels like it is trending that way but it's not there just yet.

I think all parties are waiting to see what happens over the next 6-months to year. Negotiations could resume depending on developments.

The president of WSU said we will be surprised by the deal we will get from ESPN according to what the PAC commissioner's negotiating is creating, with the PAC staying at the current 10 schools.

After a relatively quiet couple of weeks on the conference realignment stage...

Oregon needs to stay out of any long-term deals tied to the PAC or any other conference not named the B1G/SEC.  Be patient and play the waiting game unless either the B1G or SEC extend an invite.
