Former Oregon Ducks’ star Dillon Brooks: Canadian basketball team going ‘to put the world on notice’ at the 2023 FIBA World Cup

Dillon Brooks signed a four-year deal worth up to $90 million to join the Houston Rockets in July. The Rockets expect Brooks to provide leadership, defense and scoring to a young team looking for a turnaround.

Brooks looks like he’ll fill those roles nicely if his performances with Canada’s mens national team during the 2023 FIBA World Cup are any indication. The guard/forward helped Canada crush France 95-65 Friday in their opening game of the tournament.

Watch: Former Oregon Ducks’ star Christian Gonzalez avoids injury after scare with the New England Patriots

The New England Patriots were very concerned after rookie cornerback Christian Gonzalez limped off the field with what initially looked like an ankle or foot injury last week.

Gonzalez landed awkwardly while trying to break up a pass near the end of the practice and hobbled to the sideline where he was met by the medical staff. The concern was the team’s first-round pick (No. 17) in the 2023 NFL draft might have sustained an injury that would jeopardize his availability for the start of the regular season.

He’s expected to be one of the starters at cornerback when the Patriots take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1 to begin the regular season.

Eagles to waive WR Devon Allen ahead of 53-man roster deadline

The Eagles are making roster moves, and wide receiver Devon Allen is being waived ahead of Tuesday’s roster deadline.

A former Oregon wide receiver and Olympian, Allen missed the early part of Eagles training camp with a calf strain.

Allen flashed his potential with a 73-yard kickoff return in the preseason finale, and he’ll undoubtedly find a place on the practice squad.

NFL roster cuts tracker 2023: Devon Allen, Jermar Jefferson, Chase Cota among players with Oregon ties who were cut

Devon Allen’s big game wasn’t enough.

The wide receiver, who was trying to earn a spot on the Philadelphia Eagles’ 53-man roster to start the season, was cut Tuesday, the deadline day for teams to pare their rosters in time for Week 1.

Allen, the former Oregon Ducks star and two-time Olympian hurdler, had posted a strong performance in the Eagles’ final preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts. Allen started the game by showcasing his speed with a scintillating 72-yard kickoff return down to the Colts’ 27.

As of Tuesday morning, 32 former Oregon players were listed on the current 2023 NFL rosters, up from 23 during the 2022 season. While not all of those players will make the 53-man roster, some will be part of the 16-member practice squad that NFL teams can carry for the 2023 season.

Justin Herbert happy about the Oregon Ducks moving to the Big 10, sad about the demise of the Pac-12

Justin Herbert played for the Oregon Ducks in the Pac-12 and finished his college career in 2019.

The Los Angeles Chargers quarterback’s college career is intertwined with the Ducks and the Pac-12. So he’s still getting used to the Ducks moving to the Big 10 amid the implosion of the Pac-12 just four years after he left the conference.

“It’s going to take some time to get adjusted to that, but I’m excited,” Herbert said Friday on the Colin Cowherd radio show. “It’s a great opportunity to go play some football against some really good football teams.

Former Oregon Duck Juwan Johnson looking to go from good to great with the New Orleans Saints in 2023

Juwan Johnson switched from wide receiver to tight end and the results were very promising in 2022. The New Orleans Saints player and former Oregon Ducks’ star has high hopes for the 2023 season.

In fact, there’s talk Johnson could emerge as one of the premier players at the position.

Johnson was just a rookie at the position last year, now, with a year of experience under his belt, he’s ready for a breakout year.

“I’ve always seen myself being a good player,” Johnson told neworleanssaints.com. “That’s how I’ve always carried myself, going into high school and college, me being a good player but I know I always could be great. That’s the tier I’m trying to break into, being great.”

The most intriguing White Sox prospect

A well-known beer ad famously featured advertisements entitled "The Most Interesting Man in the World," which for my money is one of the most entertaining promotional campaigns ever put together.

“His blood smells like cologne.”

“He once warned a psychic.”

I mean, that’s gold, Jerry. Pure gold.

Rikuu Nishida, the White Sox 11th-round pick in the 2023 Draft out of Oregon, might be the most interesting man in the Minor Leagues.

So why did Nishida attend Oregon, where the 5-foot-6, 150-pound left-handed hitter posted a .313 average, .837 OPS and 25 stolen bases in 2023? His response is a colorful one...

With the 2023 NFL season kicking off this evening, there are 31 total former Ducks who either earned a 53-man roster spot, landed on a practice squad, or are currently on the physically unable-to-perform list.

How former Ducks performed on the first NFL Sunday of the year

The NFL season is finally upon us, and littered across the league are former Oregon Ducks. Like I’ve done for the players across the NCAA who have transferred from Oregon, I will be providing a weekly update on the notable players who moved on from Oregon to the NFL.

There are 26 former Oregon Ducks on active NFL rosters. Not all of them are included in this list because not all of them played in or impacted their team’s first game. For this reason, the names on this list will likely fluctuate from week to week.

Dallas Wings and former Oregon Ducks’ star Satou Sabally named AP’s Most Improved Player in the WNBA

Satou Sabally’s career year in 2023 is getting plenty of attention.

The Dallas Wings forward and former Oregon Ducks’ star was selected as the WNBA’s Most Improved Player of the year by the Associated Press, the team announced. Sabally was also selected to the Associated Press All-WNBA Second Team.

Sabally, in her fourth season, averaged 18.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.8 steals in 38 games, all career-highs. She also shot 43.5% from the field and 36.1% from beyond the 3-point line, also career-highs.

Sabally finished ninth in the league in scoring and tied for 11th in rebounding, leading to her second appearance as an All-Star and first as a starter.

How Satou Sabally's mental, physical reset paved way to stardom

SATOU SABALLY STOOD on the court at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, listening to the sideline reporter's first question of their postgame interview, when she was ambushed. She had just recorded a career-high 40 points -- hitting 7 of 10 3-pointers -- to help the Dallas Wings secure a postseason berth.

Teammates Arike Ogunbowale, Odyssey Sims and Veronica Burton snuck up from behind and emptied water bottles over her, screaming in celebration.

Sabally tried to escape, holding up her braids to prevent them from getting wet. The floor was slick with water, but she couldn't help herself.

Sabally started to moonwalk, garnering oohs from teammates. It was her first game back after missing the previous two with an ankle injury, and she had extra juice that night.

"Once you're out for a week," Sabally said in the interview, "you just want to play ball again." As for the moonwalk? "I felt like I just had to hit it."

The performance, even the display of joy, wasn't a given a year or two ago, though not because Sabally lacked the potential.

Some analysts thought the former Oregon star and No. 2 overall pick had the highest ceiling of anyone in the 2020 draft class, including former Ducks teammate Sabrina Ionescu.

How former Ducks performed in Week 4 of the NFL

Players like Juwan Johnson, Pharoah Brown, and Shane Lemieux, who either had their best or only game of the 2023 season last weekend, failed to impact the games they played in this weekend — if they played at all.

There were still plenty of players that were able to make an impact. T.J. Bass is one of the more interesting stories of the week because, despite a poor performance last weekend, he still got in for the Cowboys this Sunday and showed improvement.
