Pac-12 Oregon's Coverage of Women's Basketball

Recommended Posts

I watched the PAC12 Oregon streaming of the Oregon-Northwestern women's basketball game.  The play-by-play and color announcer (Bev Smith) were great--BUT BUT BUT.  Someone decided to show full screen messages like "Great Shot" during the game.  This pretty much always meant the viewer missed live action.  Injudicious use of replays also meant missing live action (this was a big problem last year as well.)  People tune in to see the game--the whole game.  Missing live action, particularly for the silly graphics, is irritating and this problem needs to be corrected.

Ducks now last team within NCAA Tournament field in latest ESPN projection

It's too early to say if Oregon's done enough to reach this year's NCAA Tournament field, but at least one media outlet thinks the Ducks would be in the field should the season end today.

ESPN's Charlie Creme posted his most recent bracket projections on Friday morning, and now has Oregon as the final team within the field as a 12-seed. The Ducks would face St. John's in the opening four games in Creme's projection.

Per Creme, the Ducks opened the week as the final team outside the field entering this week's conference tournament. A win over Washington, another bubble team on Wednesday, provided them enough juice to get over the hump this time around.

Oregon's resume is a confounding one. Sure, the Ducks are 17-14 on the season and finished with a losing 7-11 record in conference play, but they also have far and away the best computer metrics of any team currently on the bubble. Even with the 14 defeats this season, the Ducks are No. 19 in the NET Ranking after Thursday's Pac-12 Tournament quarterfinal loss to Stanford.

Kelly Graves says Ducks would play in WNIT if NCAA Tournament doesn't work out

It remains unclear what the postseason will hold for the Oregon women's basketball team, but Kelly Graves made it clear following Thursday's Pac-12 Tournament loss to Stanford that his team would be playing regardless of what tournament they're included in.

While the latest ESPN bracket projections have the Ducks as the final team inside the field, they remain anything but a lock to go dancing.

Should the Ducks be excluded from that tournament, they would accept a bid to an invitational tournament like the WNIT, Graves said on Thursday.

"My philosophy has always been if somebody wants us to play, we're going to play. So, that's a yes," Graves said when asked about a possible WNIT opportunity. "I think the team would rather play. I've never understood why people turn things like that down on some kind of principle."

Oregon women now outside tournament field in latest ESPN projection

While Oregon has put the finishing touches on its at-large berth resume, other schools across the country continue to play on and add to theirs.

West Virginia scored a big win over Baylor on Saturday to conclude their regular season, and according to ESPN's latest bracket projections, the win is enough to lift the Mountaineers over the Ducks for the final spot in this year's NCAA Tournament field.

Charlie Creme, the website's bracket expert, has now dropped the Ducks to the first team outside of the field of 68.

Oregon's NCAA Tournament future still in doubt ahead of Selection Sunday

As recently as a few days ago, it seemed like Kelly Graves and the Oregon Ducks had done enough over the final few games of the season to get themselves in a spot to be invited to the NCAA Tournament.

It turns out that might have been a little bit too optimistic, unfortunately for Oregon fans. According to the latest edition of ESPN’s bracketology, the Ducks are still listed as the “first team out” with less than a week to go until Selection Sunday.

Oregon is done playing, obviously, but there are still other dominoes to fall across the nation.

At the moment, it looks like the Ducks might miss out on the NCAA Tournament, according to the latest bracketology.

Chance Gray’s familial guidance has helped her navigate Oregon women’s up-and-down season

Gray has played and started in every game this season for the Ducks. She is averaging 10.7  points per game, 2.4 assists and 0.8 steals.

Part of Gray’s maturity comes from the fact that her family is not new to navigating the collegiate sports scene. Her father Carlton Gray played college football for UCLA and was drafted into the NFL where he played eight seasons.

Her older sister Amber Gray played basketball at both the University of Tennessee and Xavier before playing professionally overseas. Both coached her during her last season at Winton Woods High School.

“They’ve taught me the work ethic and what it takes to be successful at these different levels, so I’m very thankful to have people like them in my corner,” she said. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.”

Oregon women see NCAA Tournament odds diminished by upsets

The last 24 hours have not not kind to Oregon's at-large hopes.

Play in the AAC and WCC conference tournaments did not go there way, with South Florida and Gonzaga each failing to punch automatic tickets. Both schools have strong enough resumes to earn at-large bids, thereby making the margin smaller for bubble teams.

Because of these upsets, the Ducks have fallen to the third team outside of ESPN's NCAA Tournament bracket projections.

WNIT quarterfinal exit sends Oregon into important offseason

After a disappointing 2022-23 season came to an unceremonious conclusion in Seattle on Sunday, the Ducks will enter an important offseason with a roster that remains in flux.

The only thing known for certain is that three seniors have played their final games. Taya Hanson, Ahlise Hurst and Taylor Hosendove have exhausted their eligibility and will not be playing basketball collegiately after Sunday's 63-59 loss to Washington in the WNIT quarterfinal round.

That leaves the seven remaining players with decisions to make. The most prominent and urgent decision belongs to Endyia Rogers, who has until Tuesday night (per reporting from OregonLive's James Crepea) to decide if she wants to enter the WNBA Draft or not. Rogers could also chose to use the NCAA's extra season at Oregon or go elsewhere.

Ducks crack ESPN's way-too-early women's basketball top 25 for next season

ESPN released its first look at a 2023-24 top 25 shortly after the conclusion of Sunday's national title game. The Ducks are included among the 25 best program for next season, coming at No. 18, and projected to make a return to the Big Dance as well.

As things stand currently, four of five starters from last year's team, which finished 20-15, are slated to return next season. Gray, VanSlooten and Paopao are former five-star recruits who averaged in double-figures this past season, while center Phillipina Kyei grabbed the third most rebounds in school history and was second among Pac-12 players.

The Ducks also bring back freshman center Kennedy Basham, and had Sammie Wagner on the roster for a redshirt season for the final three months of the season.

The team is set to add three more recruits in four-star preps Sofia Bell from Portland, Sarah Rambus from Flint (Mich.) and local junior college guard Bella Hamel.

WBB: current roster outlook

It’s been a time of transition for Oregon women’s basketball. Some of the biggest contributors from last season have departed, and the hype surrounding the program from a couple years ago seems to be dying down.

Now the question is, can head coach Kelly Graves bring some of it back this offseason?

First thing was first for Graves; the infamous transfer portal. He didn’t waste much time, already adding three impact players within the last month or so.

Women’s hoops was essentially gutted and is now piecing back together, where are they currently at?

Oregon Women’s Basketball: Comparing Transfer Performances

With the increase in portal activity the past two or three seasons, we’ve seen a fair number of Ducks - some highly regarded - enter the transfer portal for other schools.

Our time today is not to speculate as to the why of a player’s choice to enter the portal. It’s enough that they made the choice, and the reasoning for wanting to play at a different school is as different as the players entering the portal.

That’s not the purpose of this examination. What we’re doing is taking a look at each player’s statistics at their last season at Oregon and then comparing that with the player’s stats at the new school.

You can infer what you like from the numbers; after all, as Mark Twain famously put it, there are lies, damn lies, and statistics.

OREGON, BAYLOR SCHEDULE HOME-AND-HOME SERIES

Oregon and Baylor have agreed to a home-and-home series beginning with the upcoming 2023-24 season, head coach Kelly Graves announced Monday.

The Ducks and Bears will meet on Dec. 3 at the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas, while BU will visit Matthew Knight Arena during the 2024-25 season.

"We are always looking to build a tough non-conference schedule and Baylor will be a marquee non-con opponent for us," Graves said. "A matchup against such a quality program will help us prepare for the gauntlet of the Pac-12 schedule, and it will be good for our young team to take a great opponent in a tough environment."

December's matchup will be the first since the teams met in the 2019 NCAA Final Four in which Baylor, then ranked as the nation's No. 1 team, came away with a 72-67 victory in Tampa, Fla. BU leads the all-time series 4-0, with a 1-0 home record and a 1-0 record in Eugene.

Women's basketball transfer Skyler Gill will not play at Oregon

North Alabama transfer Skyler Gill will not play basketball at Oregon, sources have told DuckTerritory.com. The decision comes about two months after she announced her commitment to join the program back on June 1.

Gill has already been removed from the official 2023-24 roster, and is no longer enrolled at the university.

Gill was twice the Atlantic Sun Defensive Player  of the Year, and was expected to improve Oregon's defensive prowess over her two seasons of remaining eligibility. She blocked 3.0 shots per game over 53 outings with the Lions despite standing at just 5-foot-11 in height.

The team now carries 11 scholarship players on its roster ahead of the 2023-24 season. Gill had been one of four Division 1 transfers brought in to help build out the roster this season.
