Oregon making progress as they gear up for No. 3 Houston Sunday night

"They are really good. They are two, or three in the country. They should be," said Oregon head coach Dana Altman of the Houston Cougars.

"They are veterans, their guard experience, inside they have big bodies, athletic bodies.

Real difficult assignment, bit opportunity, but a very tough team to match up against because of their depth and experience."

Houston was a preseason favorite to win the national championship, and they've lived up to the hype early this season.

Oregon guard Brennan Rigsby will remain out for "awhile" according to Dana Altman

According to Ducks’ head coach Dana Altman, Oregon (2-1) is without guards Brennan Rigsby

and Jermaine Cousinard, as well as forwards Ethan Butler and Lok Wur due to injury.

The Ducks are gearing up for the most difficult stretch of their non-conference schedule but will continue

to play with a short rotation through the final week of November as none of those players will be available

for Sunday’s showdown with Houston, nor the PK85 Invitational in Portland from Nov. 24-27.

The Oregon Ducks will be without at least four scholarship players for the foreseeable future, according to head coach Dana Altman.

Kel’el Ware has quickly become vital to Oregon men’s basketball game plans

“I wanted to bring the freshman along slowly, but now we’ve got a different scenario and

he’s going to have to guard on the perimeter a little bit,” Altman said.

“Nate’s going to have to guard more on the perimeter. That’s a tough adjustment for guys

that are used to going and standing in the paint.”

The Ducks host No. 3 Houston (4-0) Sunday and Ware is going to be asked to play well beyond his years.

The defense is legitimately good, the offense is an absolute mess, can't shoot, can't drive, can't make good decisions, only plus player on the offensive end is Dante from what I can see.

It's going to be a really long season if this team can't hit any 3s, teams will just double Dante and not have to worry about the outside shooting.

N’Faly Dante double-double not enough for Oregon men’s basketball against No. 3 Houston

Houston plays the way Dana Altman wants Oregon to play.

The No. 3 Cougars have the talent, length, speed, shooting ability

and defensive and rebounding tenacity to play with any team in the country.

The Ducks may get to that point, particularly when fully healthy, but short-handed

they’re several steps shy of being able to knock off one of the nation’s elite juggernauts.

Oregon commits too many mistakes, upset bid thwarted by No. 3 Houston

The Oregon Ducks knew going into the game against No. 3 Houston that they'd have

to play their best basketball to have a chance at the upset home win.

They showed flashes of their best basketball, and for spurts, they hung with the Cougars.

The problem that has hurt Oregon this season showed up in Sunday night's game.

Poor shooting on the perimeter, communication breakdowns on defense, and untimely

turnovers by Oregon veterans showed up at moments the Ducks couldn't have it.

The injury bug has been an issue for a few seasons now. The Duck teams that have gelled into champions got the early season to learn how to play together. This has been missing for a while as we stumble through December with a rag-tag line up.

Dante's progression has been fun to watch.

I wasn't happy when Richardson said he was coming back, and I haven't seen anything to change my mind.

I will always have faith in Dana Altman. He's one of the best in the country. I can never remember which stat it is (might be consecutive 20-win seasons), but the other guys on the list are all in the hall of fame. It's just that his name isn't Izzo, or Shashefshky............Yeah, I know. You spell it..............

Doesn't help that Barthelemy went out with bad ankle in the first half and didn't come back tonight.

Oregon starting guard Keeshawn Barthelemy suffers injury vs Houston

The Oregon men's basketball program has already dealt with a handful of injuries that have impacted how the

Ducks can practice and play games. Now they suffered another injury that could have a lasting impact on the season's future.

Starting guard Keeshawn Barthelemy suffered an ankle injury in the first half of Sunday night's game against No. 3 Houston.

He tried to play through it, but it was very clear he couldn't continue to play, and he left the game just before halftime.

"Just don't have many guards. I don't know what Keeshawn's situation is going to be," said head coach Dana Altman. "Dont like seeing him

in the boot. We have Jermaine out, Brennan out, and now Keeshawn will be out for a little bit. We are a little short on guards."

NO. 3 HOUSTON HOLDS OFF DUCKS

Despite 16 turnovers and 3-of-22 three-point shooting, the Ducks (2-2) fought within 60-54

with more than 2 minutes still to play. But the Cougars got back up by 12 before Oregon could score again.

"A lot to work on," UO coach Dana Altman said. "We showed our inability to handle the ball, and that was a pretty big part of it."
