Beavers overcome 21-point Oregon lead to stun Ducks in rivalry game

A trip to Las Vegas felt imminent with five to play in the third quarter.

The Ducks had just scored a third consecutive touchdown to pull ahead by 21 points.

However, the game was turned on its head in short order. OSU rattled off 28 unanswered

points to spoil the day and pull off a stunning 38-34 win at Reser Stadium.

Instant reaction: Lanning's inexperience can't be an excuse anymore

When all is said and done, OSU received a lot of help during the scoring run from many,

many questionable coaching decisions from the Ducks’ coaching staff.

Usually here at DucksWire. we like to stay away from criticizing the coaches because

they know a lot more than we do.

But it’s not out there to say the coaches, not the players, cost the team not only a win, but a chance to win the Pac-12 title.

After trailing early to the Beavers, the Ducks used one of their patented surges over the

"middle 8" stage of the game to put together a run of 24 straight points.

But Oregon State used its rushing game and some timely defensive stops to rally back and win, 38-34.

Special teams miscues pave the way for second half collapse

All in all, three of OSU's four second half touchdowns were the result of short fields following special teams errors.

While the majority of the errors took place in the final 20 minutes of regulation, a second quarter blocked punt

may have been a harbinger of things to come.

Love the gambles, but its time to make the right gambles for Oregon's staff

What's made Oregon's program so good this season has been its ability to make the plays

in clutch moments and find the right time to take a major risk and execute it correctly.

Through the first nine games of the season, Dan Lanning ran a masterclass on when to go for

it on fourth down, when to pull out the trick play, and when to roll the dice on a gambling call and hit on it.

In the last three weeks of this season, we've seen the other end of the spectrum on the gambles and risky coaching moves.

The Ducks were on cruise control with a 31-10 lead after Camden Lewis' 42-yard field goal with 4:46 remaining in the third quarter.

Oregon State proceeded to score touchdowns on its next four offensive possessions to take the lead. The comeback was aided

by sloppy play from the Ducks, highlighted by punter Alex Bales mishandling the ball on 4th-and-5 from deep in his own territory.

Notable quotes from Dan Lanning following second rivalry loss of 2022 season

Not only did Lanning drop a heartbreaker to the Huskies a few weeks ago, ending Oregon’s College Football Playoff hopes, but the

Ducks also choked against the Beavers on Saturday, taking away their sure-fire chances at a place in the Pac-12 Championship Game.

Fortunately, Lanning is young and able to learn as he goes. He wore this one on the chin and evaluated the loss afterward.

Here are some of the most notable quotes from his post-game press conference.

Report card: Oregon defense/special teams turn in another failing grade in Corvallis meltdown

At one point Saturday afternoon, we were actually looking forward to writing up this report card.

Oregon was up 31-10 in the third quarter and nearly every phase was playing well and on point.

Then the meltdown occurred and a nice day in Corvallis turned ugly quickly

and the Ducks suffered a 38-34 loss that will be difficult to forget.

Here’s the final report card for the 2022 regular season.

Ken Goe: Oregon Ducks’ loss to rival Oregon State belongs to coach Dan Lanning

It’s hard to see how Oregon State won with a quick glance at the statistics.

Oregon outgained the Beavers 470 yards to 328 and limited OSU to 60 yards net passing.

Those numbers don’t tell the story. This loss belongs to UO coach Dan Lanning. His fingerprints are all over it.

After reading all of the second-guessing and speculation on what happened in the losses to UW and Oregon State, the root cause really is that cheap shot on Bo Nix by a Fusky defensive player.

I would like to think that with a healthy Bo Nix, most if not all the 4th down gambles would have been converted (assuming same game situations) and we would have won at least one, if not both those games.

I really hope the Ducks hang 50+ points on those dirty Fuskies while pitching a shutout next season in front of their home crowd...

Ok, enough venting for now lol.

I agree with ths completely.  A healthy Bo and I think we would have won both of those games.  In addition, instead of all the complaining about the play calling, in game mistakes, poor defense, and grousing about Lanning in general, everyone would be estatic.  The donors and fans would be overlooking some glaring team weaknesses due to the superior offense led by Bo.
