Where Oregon's offense ranks nationally after end of regular season

It was a fun year offensively in Eugene. Let’s take a look at where they rank nationally

in some key statistics now that the year is over.

Though the season ended on a sour note, Oregon’s offense was among the best in the nation in 2022.

Redshirt tracker: Where Oregon freshmen eligibility stands after regular season

With the regular season now completed, I found it time to take a look at which players saw the field enough to burn their redshirt seasons

and which have not. The Ducks will not play in the conference title game, meaning that only the bowl game remains this season.

That leaves very few players in limbo heading into next month's season-concluding game.

Ranking Oregon's position groups through the 2022 regular season

Erik Skopil: I've offered grades for each position group on the Monday following each game. These grades have been

entirely subjective based upon what I've seen and my opinions of which groups have performed best.

Now is the time hand out my final regular season grades. I've gone through and averaged each week's scores.

In doing so, I've created a position group hierarchy for the season to date.

Where Dan Lanning's defense ranks nationally after frustrating Oregon season

While there were some high moments throughout the season, for the most part, the Ducks’ defense was extremely frustrating,

often underperforming and giving up multitudes of yards through the air while struggling to stop anyone on third down.

In the end, Oregon can get a lot better going forward, but the end-of-season numbers don’t paint the picture of success.

Here’s where Oregon finished up in the national rankings for some key statistics in 2022.

These numbers represent the average attendance as it relates to percentage of capacity.

For instance, the average reported attendance at Autzen this year was listed as 102%—UO 54950.

We were about 2% over capacity, which would mean standing room tickets were sold.

I think this attendance number is based on tickets sold and not actually the number who showed

for games as I noted on tv where some games did not appear full.

Based on these numbers, the Ducks did pretty well on ticket sales.

Who were the 10 best defensive players for the Ducks in 2022 according to PFF?

t was an up-and-down season for the Oregon defense in 2022. The Ducks struggled as a team and individually

to the new scheme Dan Lanning and his coordinators Tosh Lupoi and Matt Powledge installed.

As a team overall, the Ducks’ defensive rating went from 74.6 in 2021 to 79.0 in 2022 under Lanning and his staff.

Check out the top 10 defensive players in 2022, according to PFF.

Statistically speaking: Oregon ends regular season with its worst defense since 2016

The Ducks (9-3) ended the regular season having regressed in scoring, pass defense, yards per rush allowed, yards per play allowed,

third down and sacks compared to last season and have their poorest measures in most of those statistics since at least 2016.

Here is where Oregon ranks in the Pac-12 and nationally in 2022:

"For the Oregon Ducks, it was a successful year, with Dan Lanning leading his squad to a 10-win season in his first year in Eugene. The Ducks met expectations and are now set up for an incredibly bright future.

Before we move on from the past, though, we want to take one last look at where the ESPN Football Power Index ranks the Ducks. All season we’ve been using the FPI — a tool that measures a team’s true strength on a net point scale; expected point margin vs. opponent on a neutral field — to give a view of things that’s different than the College Football Playoff rankings, or the Associated Press Top 25."

DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM

The Ducks started the 2022 season ranked No. 23 in ESPN’s Football Power Index. Where did they finish the season?

Dan Lanning is no fan of stats. He said as much this season when discussing their value.

However, for those of us covering the team, end-of-season stats can provide greater understanding of the strengths and weaknesses a team possessed.

With that in mind, the Duck Territory staff has pieced together nine stats that we think told the story of the 2022 season and could do the same next fall in 2023.

For this DT Roundtable, myself, Matt Prehm and Jared Mack have each selected a good stat, a bad stat and a stat we think will be key for the team's success next fall. To avoid possible overlap, we have conferred with each other, so unlike past versions of this article, don't expect to see any repeat answers.

With that, here are nine stats from the 2022 Oregon football season we believe are worth knowing.

Oregon's Bucky Irving named one of best returning running backs in country for 2023

Bucky Irving was a nightmare for opposing defenders to bring down, bouncing off tackles and finding the exact right cutback lane to turn 4-yard runs into 20-yard runs and constantly producing when his number was called.

He finished third among Pac-12 players in rushing yardage and fourth among qualified Pac-12 players in rushing efficiency.

And he’ll be back for more in 2023.
