Instant reaction: Oregon's season ends with an epic Holiday Bowl win

A lot of Oregon’s weaknesses showed up towards the end of the regular season and unfortunately,

not a lot of them were corrected over the last month.

Bo Nix’s injured ankle was still banged up and he was obviously still hampered and the lack of plays down the field was proof.

The Ducks couldn’t get anything going offensively, but somehow, some way, Oregon came away with a 28-27 win over North Carolina in the Holiday Bowl.

OREGON'S HOLIDAY BOWL WIN TAKES STING OUT OF LATE-SEASON STUMBLES

When bowl matchups were announced earlier this month, many fixated on the Holiday Bowl having No. 15 Oregon taking on ACC Coastal Champ North Carolina. It offered the potential for a massive amount of offensive fireworks between a pair of top-25 offenses.

While the scoreboard didn’t quite light up as much as some had expected, the game nevertheless delivered plenty of explosive plays and late pyrotechnics, as the Ducks used a two-minute drive in the final seconds to knock off the Tar Heels in a 28-27 thriller at Petco Park in San Diego.

Three takeaways from Oregon's comeback win over North Carolina in the Holiday Bowl

It wasn’t a pretty win, but it was Oregon’s 10th of the season. With Nix and a host of co-stars back for

the 2023 year, the bowl win should serve as a springboard of sorts.

The Ducks had lost two of three to close out the regular season, and while a Holiday Bowl trophy won’t totally wash away that sour taste,

it will go down as a memorable send-off for an accomplished group of seniors and a positive to build on heading into the offseason.

Here are three takeaways from the game...This article is a good recommended read.

Ducks make it dramatic in the end to top Tar Heels in Holiday Bowl

n a game that most predicted to be an offensive duel Wednesday night, the predictions fell through.

Points actually came at a premium, setting up a dramatic finish for between No. 15 Oregon and North Carolina in the Holiday Bowl.

Quarterback Bo Nix didn't play his most dynamic game of the season, but after leading the Ducks to just 14 points through three and

a half quarters, he delivered big late with two touchdowns in the final 7 minutes to send Oregon to a momentous 28-27 win.

Bo Nix says Ducks went back to a 'favorite play' on deciding TD pass

The Ducks have relied upon Bo Nix to make big plays all season. On the most crucial play of Wednesday's Holiday Bowl,

he also chose the play during the timeout prior to a 6-yard touchdown pass to Chase Cota for the deciding score.

Nix side-stepped the spotlight like he would an onrushing defender though, giving credit to interim play caller Drew Mehringer

and his teammates for what ultimately was the game-winning play.

Jon Gold: Oregon displays the resilience it has all season in Holiday Bowl comeback win

Dealt the hardest of blows during the offseason, when one of their teammates died tragically, the Oregon football team could’ve folded.

Saddled with an embarrassing season-opening loss to a juggernaut opponent, the Ducks could’ve cracked.

Trailing North Carolina by 10 points in the Holiday Bowl on Wednesday night with under 7 minutes to play, they could’ve called it quits.

Instead, Oregon did what it has all season. The Ducks roared back, and in the process, secured a 10-win season for Dan Lanning with one incredible comeback that came down to the final minute.

10 major takeaways from Oregon's 28-27 comeback victory over North Carolina

After watching the Oregon Ducks in the Holiday Bowl on Wednesday night, it feels like the anti-bowl sentiment needs to take

a rest for the time being. They showed heart, grit, and toughness. The Ducks showed that this wasn’t a meaningless game.

It won’t go down as one of the best bowl wins in Oregon history, but it acts as a major mile-marker in Dan Lanning’s

career in Eugene. He completed his first season with the Ducks on top, notching a 10-win year and going 1-0 in the postseason.

There are a lot of takeaways that we have from this game, from personnel, to scheme, to future outlook.

Let’s get into it. Here are our biggest takeaways from Oregon’s 28-27 Holiday Bowl win:

Holiday Bowl win sends Oregon into offseason with much needed momentum

The 1-point win by the Ducks gave head coach Dan Lanning Oregon's 13th ten-win season in program history, and he became just the second Oregon coach in program history to secure a bowl win in his first season at the helm.

Oregon heads into the 2023 off-season with plenty of work. The Ducks need to integrate new offensive coordinator Will Stein, and they'll need to fend off other programs who are coming for other assistant coaches - Oregon co-DC Matt Powledge is linked to Baylor's DC opening - while continuing to retool and reload the Oregon roster through traditional recruiting and transfer portal targets.

But going into an offseason with a bowl win for the first time since 2019's season will be the driving force for a wave of momentum for the Ducks.

It’s the end of the season, and we want to stay positive. Of course, there are several players who didn’t play to the peak of their powers, but we’re not going to focus on that today. Column: Holiday Bowl ends its unplanned holiday with Oregon, North Carolina classic

Welcome back, Holiday Bowl. Where’ve you been? Since we last saw you, old Qualcomm Stadium has been reduced to dust, a global pandemic came and mostly went, and the Padres started throwing around cash like Rodney Dangerfield at Bushwood Country Club.

After a two year absence, the Holiday Bowl really needed this game to take place for financial reasons. They got that and more from yesterday's game.
