OFF TOPICS: For Your Interest...

Recommended Posts

Sometimes there are articles of interest, but they really don't merit their own thread...Those articles will now go in here.

In my searches, I often run across these type of articles and have just not done anything with them. With the football season coming to an end, there are fewer and fewer articles being written.

I thought this would be the perfect time to start this "For Your Interest" thread. Postings will relate back to OBD in some way.

As this will be a continuous thread, older postings will be deleted as newer ones are added.

Be sure to come back often...You just might find something of interest to ponder...

Oregon Ducks offer Alabama 8th grade quarterback who led HS team to 7A state title

Trent Seaborn is only an eighth grader at Thompson Middle School (Alabama), but his high school football resume is already the stuff of legend.

Last fall, the 6-foot, 178-pound signal-caller played up at the high school level, won the starting job on varsity and led Thompson High School to an Alabama class 7A state championship, throwing for 201 yards and five touchdowns in the title game.

On Wednesday, the dynamic middle schooler picked up a scholarship offer from the Oregon Ducks — and immediately expressed both excitement about the rich quarterback tradition of the program and an eagerness to visit Eugene.

2 OT -

1. Washington AD Jen Cohen is one of 3 new playoff committee members.

2. Here are the numbers behind FSU wanting a bigger piece of the ACC pie. FSU (according to FSU) accounts for 15% of the ACC media rights and brings in a 7% distribution. I imagine that Clemson which also wants a bigger piece of the pie accounts for more than 15% of the conference's media rights.

Asking for a bigger share of the pie is a trend I expect will continue; especially in the 3 P5 conferences lagging financially behind the B1G and the SEC.  In today's San Jose Mercury News (paywall) Mick Montgomery, former CBB coach at Stanford opines that The Cardinal and CAL are no longer able to compete at the highest levels of P5 CFB and CBB.

Good gosh....getting only half of what they bring? I can understand the issue, and I do not recall the numbers on Oregon--but someone posted astounding numbers as to how what percentage of the total Pac-12 audience watched Oregon vs. what our distribution percentage is.

It is not good, and...

Reading an article in The Athletic brought to my attention something I had forgotten.

Before CU and Utah joined the conference the then Pac-10 had unequal revenue sharing. The Pac-12 went with equal sharing when CU and Utah joined which did not make USC happy. The Network came about which further cemented equal revenue sharing which was and is contrary to the eyeballs on the various P-12 regional coverage offered by the Network.

Head Football Coach Chip Kelly Signs Contract Extension Through 2027

Chip Kelly has signed a contract extension to remain head football coach at UCLA through 2027, it was announced today by Martin Jarmond, the Alice and Nahum Lainer Family Director of Athletics.

Kelly has guided the program to an increased winning percentage in each of his five seasons and is coming off a campaign that saw the Bruins ranked in the final AP Top 25 and AFCA Coaches Poll (both No. 21) for the first time since 2014, earning a berth in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl.

"I am excited about our football program under the leadership of Coach Kelly and his talented staff," said Jarmond. "The football program is on an upward trajectory, both on the field and in the classroom. Coach Kelly and his staff have done a tremendous job developing young men as demonstrated by their academic excellence."

TAKEDA REED JOINS PAC-12 HALL OF HONOR

As a kid, Janie Takeda Reed was "small and skinny," her mom remembers. Now, her legacy will loom large in Pac-12 Conference history for all time.

Takeda Reed, who helped Oregon softball win three conference titles and make three Women's College World Series appearances as a player with the Ducks from 2012-15, was inducted Friday into the Pac-12's Hall of Honor. An Olympic silver medalist with Team USA in 2021, Takeda

Reed was inducted as part of the hall's first all-female class, in recognition of the 50th anniversary of Title IX's passing.

Still Oregon's all-time leader in hits (309), runs (204) and stolen bases (102), Takeda Reed is among the first softball players inducted into the Pac-12's Hall of Honor. Previously dedicated to men's basketball, the hall was expanded in 2018 to include participants in all Pac-12 sports.

While Waiting for Godot, a/ka/ the new Pac-10 media deal. I hope the following brings a smile to Oregon fans' faces.

FOOTBALL HEAD COACH - 'Son, this is your 5th season in this program. You have never come close to your potential. You were a 4* recruit and you have spent most of your time here on the bench.

I cannot help but wonder whether you are too ignorant to understand what we are attempting to do here; or, are you simply and totally apathetic?

Player - 'Coach, I don't know and I don't care.

College football attendance rose in 2022 with largest year-over-year increase since 1982

Seemingly everything college football was up in 2022: ticket prices, NIL riches, coaching salaries, your blood pressure if you were a Miami fan. Add attendance to the conga line of increases. In 2022, FBS attendance rose for the first time in eight years.

If you've paid attention to the sport's waning attendance figures, that's big deal. Official NCAA data shows that average FBS attendance increased 5% last season to 41,840 fans per game.

While that sounds like a modest increase, it's significant as it indicates the second-highest per game rise (1,992) in history. (The NCAA has been keeping attendance figures since 1978.)

Cal fires Mark Fox after Golden Bears finish with worst record in school history in his fourth season

California athletic director Jim Knowlton has fired men's basketball coach Mark Fox, sources told CBS Sports.

The decision was made following Cal's 69-52 loss to Washington State Wednesday in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament, a defeat that ended the Bears' dreadful season at 3-29. It's the fewest wins (in a season of three or more games) and worst winning percentage for Cal's men's basketball program in its 114-year history.

The biggest winners and losers of the 2023 transfer portal in the Pac-12

The Pac-12 may not be able to stand up to other conferences like the SEC or Big Ten when it comes to College Football Playoff appearances, but there is one area of the game where there is no better conference in the nation than the schools out west.

When it comes to the transfer portal, nobody quite dominates like the Pac-12 does. According to the 247Sports transfer portal team rankings, four teams in the Pac-12 — Colorado, USC, UCLA, and Oregon — are ranked inside the top 10 nationally, and Arizona State ranks inside the top 15.

The Pac-12 is king when it comes to improving via the transfer portal. Which team out west is the best at that game, though?

Kel'el Ware explains why he committed to Oregon in Whistle's 'Day Off' video

It’s always interesting to see what goes into a college athlete’s life off of the court. While we always get to see what they do in a select amount of time, usually from the seats at Matthew Knight Arena or on TV, there is always so much more that takes place behind the scenes.

Recently we got a chance to see a bit of what that life is like for Oregon Ducks freshman Kel’el Ware, a former 5-star recruit who came into his true freshman season in Eugene with high expectations.

The Pac-12 media negotiations aren't keeping Dan Lanning up at night

So while Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff works overtime trying to negotiate the best deal for the conference — one that will appease all members and bring in enough cash to the remaining 10 schools out west while also identifying a large enough television partner that will ensure the conference is well represented on Saturdays in the fall — it’s not a major concern for the head coach in Eugene.

Dan Lanning is worried about his football team and how they can get better, not ongoing Pac-12 media negotiations.

The back story of eighth-year Miami TE Cam McCormick, and why he might return in 2024

Snaking down Cam McCormick’s right forearm is a neatly written tattoo that aptly describes the past several years of his life. “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience,’’ it reads, “but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.’’

On Tuesday, McCormick, an old soul still playing in college less than two weeks from his 25th birthday, methodically went down the list of just some of the challenges he has endured since his 2016 graduation from Summit High School in Bend, Oregon. He began his seven-season career at the University of Oregon in 2016 before transferring to Miami in January for his eighth year of football.

Incredibly, McCormick, who already has his undergraduate and maters degrees, has an additional year of eligibility should he stick around in 2024. But more on that, later.

There is much more to the story. Read about it in the Miami Herald.

Brian Michalowksi Hits the Ground Running as New Oregon LB Coach

One of Dan Lanning's newest hires is already hitting it off with recruits.

There's a lot of new faces around the Hatfield-Dowlin Complex in Eugene this spring.

Whether it's the more than 25 newcomers that joined the Oregon Ducksfootball program for spring practice or a number of new assistants on the coaching staff, it's been an offseason full of change for Dan Lanning.

Brian Michalowski is one of the newest hires for Lanning, as he tabbed the former Oregon State defensive quality control analyst as his inside linebackers coach following Jake Long's return to Alabama.

Lanning is confident that their longstanding history of working together will help them achieve great things at Oregon.

College football's elite recruits rank nation's top facilities; Oregon, Alabama, Georgia highlight list

Back in January, before the All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas, participants in the game were asked to fill out a survey that asked them to name which school had the best athletic facilities. Ninety-four players anonymously filled out the survey and while some gave multiple answers and one refused, the results were revealing.

The results confirmed what's already known, which is that the SEC reigns supreme. But the program that received the most votes may surprise you. The Big Ten is well-represented as well and each power-five program has at least one team that received a vote.

Only two teams from non-power conferences were listed; one will soon join the Big 12 while the other is a service academy.

Lanning on class sizes moving forward: 'Somewhere between 25 and 39 is probably more of a target'

Oregon's class of 2023 encompasses nearly half of the Ducks' scholarship amount heading into this upcoming season.

With the addition of 39 new players — 29 prep recruits and 10 transfer portal additions — Oregon will look a lot different on the field next season. Whether you like it or not, this is how collegiate athletics are at this stage with the transfer portal. It provides an opportunity for players to make a more significant impact at a school of their choosing.

Alongside the transfer portal, the NCAA has removed the cap on how many players a team can add per cycle, no longer handcuffing programs at 25 players. Among the top 10 classes in 2023, nine had over the former max number of 25. Eight of those teams had over 30 incoming players, and three had over 35 new players joining the program, including Oregon.

Dan Lanning's growth mindset stems from childhood lessons

Dan Lanning has preached the value of the growth mindset since the beginning of his time in Eugene.

Little means more for the 36-year old head coach than seeing his players get better, and improvement requires a particular approach in all that you do.

"Right now our focus is growth season," Lanning said a year ago following his first spring practice as head coach. "Spring ball, and we're in a period of growth looking for opportunity to make tomorrow and the day after that better than today."
