Oregon baseball embracing new style of play from international players Rikuu Nishida, Sabin Ceballos

This season, things might look a little different. Oregon not only has a stash of talented players, but it also welcomes different styles of play from other countries, which’ll inevitably shift things around in the lineup. The Ducks have two new faces from overseas on their team: Rikuu Nishida from Japan and Sabin Ceballos from Puerto Rico.

Nishida is what many might describe as an “old school” baseball player. In the modern age, so much emphasis is placed on drawing walks and hitting home runs, with less focus on making contact and stealing bases. Oregon is certainly no exception, with power hitters like Anthony Hall, Kenyon Yovan and Gabe Matthews coming through the program. But Nishida brings a flavor to the top of the order that the Ducks were missing last year.

Then there’s Ceballos, who plays just about anywhere on the field, including catcher. His versatility is admirable in itself, but he also brings a sense of elation and exhilaration to how he plays the game and celebrates his achievements. He’s a big guy at 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, but he can still play a smooth left side of the infield.

“I think the fans are really gonna like Rikuu. I think they’re gonna really like Sabin,” Wasikowski said. “We’ve got an interesting locker room this year. They’re coming from different parts of the world, and they play like it.”

OUT OF MANY, ONE TEAM OF DUCKS

When the World Baseball Classic begins in early March, rooting interests in the Oregon locker room will be split.

No less than four countries represented in the World Baseball Classic also are represented on the UO roster, which opens its 2023 season by hosting Xavier in PK Park on Friday at 3 p.m. There are Ducks from the United States of course, and from Canada, and also from Puerto Rico and Japan.

"Having that kind of diversity in the locker room, it's so cool," veteran UO outfielder Tanner Smith said. "Everybody obviously has a different background, and a different way they came about the game. But it's really cool."

Baseball recap: Ducks walk off Xavier 3-2 in season-opening victory

If the 2023 Oregon Ducks baseball season opener is any indication on how this year is going to go for Mark Wazikowski’s team, it’s not going to be for the faint of heart.

Alabama transfer Owen Diodati hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth to score fellow newcomer Rikuu Nishida and the Ducks grabbed the season-opening win 3-2 over Xavier.

DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM

Oregon waited until the ninth inning to take the lead, but the Ducks were able to walk it off to beat Xavier 3-2.

Oregon begins new campaign with a walk off win over Xavier

Opening day signified a new season for the Ducks. Yet, Oregon's 3-2 walk-off win over Xavier was delivered from a face the Musketeers knew all too well.

Outfielder Owen Diodati walked off the Musketeers for the second straight season, this time for the Ducks. In 2022, Diodati hit a two-run home run to put a "W" in the win column for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Fast forward to 2023, and Diodati once again came through in the clutch, scoring Rikuu Nishida on a sacrifice fly into left field for the victory.

"I guess it's just kind of been fate that I've been put in that situation twice," said Diodati after the celebrations. "I stressed the same things in both situations, just don't try and do too much and know the situation. A little bit different today with the bases loaded, and no outs, it was a little bit of a different situation last year. Here, I got to two strikes, they've kind of been slider heavy the last couple of ABs. In that situation, get the ball in the air, they had five infielders going, just don't try and do too much."

Deja Vu, Diodati walks off Xavier

With Xavier playing with five infielders and two outfielders with the bases loaded and Diodati at the plate, Nishida sprinted home on a fly ball and beat the throw to score the winning run after center fielder Garrett Schultz caught the ball in shallow left-center field.

Diodati's offensive heroics were set up by a spectacular play that he made in right field to end the top of the eighth inning. With a runner on first and two outs, Matthew Deprey lifted a ball down the right-field line that Diodati made a diving catch on to keep the Ducks within a run at 2-1

Freshmen arms carry Oregon to victory in game two; Ducks complete doubleheader sweep of Musketeers

It was freshman orientation at PK Park on Saturday, as four of Oregon's five pitchers during the doubleheader were true freshmen.

In game two, true freshmen Matthew Grabmann, Turner Spoljaric, plus redshirt senior Matt Dallas combined to hold the Musketeers to three runs in Oregon's 5-3 victory, sweeping the doubleheader.

Grabmann, a true freshman from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, started and turned in four innings of work, allowing one earned run and striking out three batters. Grabmann struggled with control and the Musketeers fighting off pitches, working his pitch count up into the 80s by the end of his outing.

Pitching and power clinch sweep

Four Oregon pitchers combined to hold Xavier to just four hits and Josiah Cromwick and Gavin Grant both hit late-inning solo home runs to give No. 20 Oregon a 3-1 win and a series sweep at PK Park on Sunday.

Freshman Jackson Pace gave Oregon its first official quality start of the season allowing just one run on four hits with four strikeouts before fellow freshmen Logan Olson and Dylan McShane each tossed one scoreless inning. McShane (1-0) picked up his first career win after fanning two in the top of the eighth before giving way to senior closer Josh Mollerus who wrapped up his first save as a Duck.

Late offensive surge pushes Oregon to four-game sweep of Xavier

Oregon’s opening weekend could not have gone better, earning a four-game sweep of Xavier after a 3-1 victory on Sunday afternoon.

It wasn’t always pretty, as the Ducks managed just one hit through the first six innings on Sunday, but all it took was one swing of the bat to inject the Ducks' offense again.

For the third time this weekend, Josiah Cromwick provided that swing, clobbering the first pitch of the seventh inning over the left field fence, tying the game at one.

Cromwick, with three home runs this year, has provided an unexpected force early in the season for the Ducks.

Oregon RHP RJ Gordon out for 'a while'; Ducks pitching depth will continue to be tested

Pitching depth was on full display during Oregon's four-game series sweep of Xavier, as the Ducks turned the ball over to nine true freshmen this past weekend.

The results were excellent, allowing two earned runs in 23 innings of work. Jackson Pace, Sunday's starter, and Leo Uelmen, Saturday's starter, combined for 11 innings of work with one earned run and six strikeouts.

However, the Ducks pitching depth took a hit over the weekend when head coach Mark Wasikowski announced that RHP RJ Gordon would be out "a while" and potentially the entire season.

No. 20 Oregon aims to continue winning ways against UCSB regardless of location

Off to its best start since 2016, Oregon has won its first four games of the year before heading south to take on UC Santa Barbara.

Oregon and UCSB have traded series for years and never fail to make each one entertaining. The Ducks last traveled to UCSB in 2021, where they swept the No. 15 Gauchos, including a 17-2 drubbing where Kenyon Yovan hit two home runs and drove in five RBIs.

This year's matchup will differ in personnel and, potentially, the field itself.

With rain and winter weather moving through Southern California, the Ducks, and Gauchos are discussing moving the weekend series to a different location.

Oregon-UCSB series moved to PK Park due to weather

On Wednesday, Oregon announced that its four-game series with UCSB was moving to PK Park following forecasts of significant rainfall coming to Southern California this weekend.

The series will now start Friday at 2:05 PM PST at PK Park and will only be three games rather than the four it was initially scheduled for. Games two and three will be played on Saturday as part of a doubleheader, beginning at 11:05 AM PST. The third and final game will start 45 minutes following the completion of game two.

Young pitchers shine in Oregon’s season-opening sweep of Xavier

There’s still a long way to go, of course. But after the Ducks secured a four-game sweep of the Xavier Musketeers, initial indications are positive — particularly in the pitching department.

There’s no sugarcoating that the Ducks were going to need their freshman pitchers to step up. An already uncertain pitching staff has been beleaguered by injuries to Isaac Ayon and RJ Gordon, leaving a boatload of freshmen to slide in and prove their worth.

This weekend, they did just that. Eight freshmen combined to throw 23 of Oregon’s 34 innings, giving up only two earned runs, total. Three more innings were pitched by transfers, leaving just eight innings thrown by members of last year’s team.

And four of those eight innings were pitched by Logan Mercado, a reliever who isn’t used to being in the rotation yet. This staff has an almost entirely new look — and so far, it’s worked.

Ducks fall for first time in 2023

Oregon gave up a pair of UC Santa Barbara home runs that accounted for

all of the Gauchos' runs in a 6-2 nonconference loss at PK Park on Friday afternoon.

Head Coach Mark Wasikowski: "They pitched better than us and they hit it the clutch

better than us, and that was the difference in the game today."

The Ducks and Gauchos wrap up the three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday.

First pitch of game one is scheduled for 11:05 a.m.

Baseball recap: Santa Barbara hands Ducks their first defeat of the season

It was a couple of long balls that hurt the Ducks. Santa Barbara cracked the scoreboard in the third inning on a two-run homer from Zander Darby. It stayed that way until the fifth as Drew Cowley singled home Rikuu Nishida to make it 2-1.

But the big blow came in the seventh as Ivan Brethowr crushed a grand slam down the left field line to make it 6-1 and it put the proverbial nail in Oregon’s coffin.

Ducks drop out of top 25 after weekend sweep by UCSB

It was not an idyllic weekend for the Ducks, as UC Santa Barbara swept the three game series at PK Park quite decisively.

Oregon was outscored 20-3 in the series, hitting only two extra-base hits over the three game set. During an eight inning stretch that expanded between game two and game three, Oregon was 0-24, with one batter reaching due to an error.

Need to bounce back, that was an ugly series, bats went completely cold, simply can't happen like that.

Really didn't like the call in the third game by Waz to not bunt with Nishida at the plate, two on, no outs, and the 2-3-4 hitters at the plate, you have your best bunter, and instead of runners at 3rd and 2nd, you end up with a 1st and 3rd situation.

Ducks look to 'keep it simple' before hosting San Diego in four game series

Oregon is 4-3 to start the season, winning four straight to start and losing the aforementioned series to UCSB. Oregon is only one-eighth of the way through the season, and despite the ups and downs, it might help them to get the downs out now.

"It's been a while since we've taken a kickin' like that," said senior outfielder Tanner Smith during Tuesday's media availability. "I think it's really good to get this done, get it out of the way early.

I think it's really good for a lot of younger guys who haven't been through this and are new to college baseball and haven't realized what that feeling is.

Oregon baseball ‘hungry’ to regroup after being swept by UCSB

After the season’s first series, Oregon was 4-0, riding high off a sweep of Xavier. Three games later, it’s back to the drawing board after the Ducks fell on the wrong side of a sweep to UC Santa Barbara. It was a weekend where they were outscored 20-3, scratching across just one run in Saturday’s 18-inning doubleheader.

“There’s a lot of disappointment,” head coach Mark Wasikowski said. “We didn’t play well. We know we didn’t play well. It was really obvious.”

For the younger players on the team, there’s been a learning curve. They found success the first weekend of the season — exceeded expectations, even. But Wasikowski understands, as he’s said from the beginning, that young pitchers are going to have their ups and downs against tougher competition.

This weekend, Oregon will play four games against the University of San Diego. Unlike the previous two series, this one will be held on four consecutive days, with no doubleheader.

And unlike the Ducks, the Toreros are off to a hot start with the bat. They’re 5-1-1, with a rare tie coming in a wild 16-16 game against Nebraska. They have six hitters batting over .300, including Jack Costello, who was recently named a national player of the week.

A strong pitching performance puts Oregon on top against San Diego

Fresh off a three-game sweep by UCSB, Oregon had seen this story before—allowing a first inning home run followed by a struggling offensive performance.

In the second and third innings, the sun filled sky was not indicative of how the Ducks played. Two costly baserunning mistakes turned run scoring opportunities into scoreless frames, something the Ducks couldn't afford.

What kept the Ducks in the game was a dominant performance from their starter Jace Stoffal. Stoffal, who allowed two earned runs last outing, threw five frames, allowing the lone solo homer.

Stoffal highlights strong Ducks’ effort on the mound

Jace Stoffal allowed just one run in five innings and got help from a pair of relievers as Oregon picked up a 3-2 win in game one of a nonconference series against San Diego at PK Park on Thursday afternoon.

Stoffal held the Toreros (5-2-1) to just two hits while fanning a career-high four in his second start of the season. Matt Dallas pitched 2.2 innings in relief of Stoffal before giving way to closer Josh Mollerus, who got the final four outs to clinch the win.

The three Duck pitchers combined to allow just six hits and four walks while fanning eight.

Smith delivers walk-off win for Ducks

It was a great day to be Tanner Smith. With one swing of the bat in the ninth inning, Smith delivered a walk-off double giving Oregon a 4-3 win over San Diego while adding a new Oregon program record to his resume.

Smith's RBI double scored pinch runner Mason Lytle from second, giving Oregon (6-3) its second one-run win over the Toreros in as many days. Smith (2-for-5) also set a new program record for multi-hit games with the 67th of his career breaking the old record held by Gabe Matthews (2017-21).

Tanner Smith leads the way in walk-off victory over San Diego; sets new school record in the process

Oregon's winning ways continued on Friday afternoon, taking down the Toreros 4-3 in walk-off fashion.

After San Diego tied the game in the seventh inning, Oregon's Logan Mercado silenced the Torero's bats in the ninth to give the Ducks a chance heading into the final frame.

A leadoff double from Owen Diodati, his first hit of the night, set up Smith for the game-clinching hit.

Smith laced an 0-1 offering down the left field line, a favorite corner for Oregon's offense, and sent pinch-runner Mason Lytle home safely, winning the game and giving the Ducks a 2-0 series lead.
