PRESEASON RECOGNITION FOR DUCKS, BUNKER

 

The Ducks are ranked as high as No. 17 in the preseason polls (Extra Inning Softball). Oregon is also ranked No. 22 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll, No. 23 by D1 Softball and No. 24 in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25.
 
The Ducks have been ranked in every NFCA and USA Softball poll dating to the 2020 preseason poll.
 
Individually, Allee Bunker has been receiving preseason accolades as both one of the nation's top overall players as well as one of the best in the country at second base.

Hansen No-Hitter Highlights Sweep

 

Stevie Hansen threw a no-hitter and Allee Bunker blasted two home runs as the Ducks swept Utah Valley and UC Riverside Friday to open the Campbell/Cartier Classic at SDSU Softball Stadium.
 
Hansen threw a six-inning no-hitter in the opening game against Utah Valley, striking out nine Wolverines in the Ducks' 9-0 win.
 
"I had no clue," said Hansen, unaware she was throwing a no-hitter. "It was kind of one of those things where you just get into the groove of the game and you're just focused on getting outs and getting your job done."

Stevie Hansen recorded her first career no-hitter and Raegan Breedlove notched a nine-out save to send Oregon to a pair of wins to open the Campbell/Cartier Classic.

 

Hansen struck out nine and walked one over 6.0 innings in a 9-0 win over Utah Valley and Breedlove allowed two hits and struck out a pair after taking over for Morgan Scott in a 6-1 win for No. 24 Oregon over UC Riverside Friday afternoon in San Diego.

McGowan, Bottom of the Order Key to Sweep

 

 Terra McGowan drove in six runs and Stevie Hansen was dominant in the circle for the second straight day as No. 24 Oregon swept a pair of 2022 NCAA Tournament teams – LMU and San Diego State - Saturday at the Campbell/Cartier Classic at SDSU Softball Stadium.
 
The Ducks (7-2) also got a big boost from the bottom of the lineup as the seven, eight and nine batters combined to hit .500 (9-for-18) on Saturday.

Terra McGowan and Tehya Bird each had three hits and Stevie Hansen was nearly untouchable in relief as Oregon completed its five-game trip to San Diego with another win.

 

McGowan (four RBIs) and Bird each homered and Hansen allowed just two hits and struck out seven over 4.2 innings in a 12-5 win for the No. 24 Ducks over UC Riverside Sunday morning.

Ducks Score Season-High 12 Runs in Win

 

Terra McGowan and Allee Bunker combined to hit for the cycle in the first two inning and Stevie Hansen came on in relief and shutdown UC Riverside as No. 24 Oregon defeated the Highlanders 12-5 Sunday on the final day of the Campbell/Cartier Classic at SDSU Softball Stadium.
 
McGowan homered in the first inning and singled in the second, while Bunker tripled in the first and doubled in the second to lead a 12-hit barrage that led to a season high in run for the Ducks.

 

Meanwhile, after UC Riverside (4-6) closed to 8-5 in the top of the third, Hansen (4-2) made her fourth appearance of the tournament and shutout the Highlanders over the last 4.2 innings of the game to claim her third win of the weekend. She struck out seven and allowed just two hits.

When Allee Bunker and Terra McGowan both have hot bats, Oregon is a very difficult team to beat.

 

The Ducks won Sunday’s matchup against UC Riverside 12-5 to finish off the Campbell/Cartier Classic undefeated. Bunker went 2-for-4 at the plate with three runs batted in. McGowan went 2-for-4 with four RBIs.

 

Stevie Hansen had another dominant game, throwing seven strikeouts.

The Ducks (8-2) are No. 22 with 116 points in the NFCA poll and No. 24 with 64 points in the USA Softball poll, after beating Utah Valley, UC Riverside twice, Loyola Marymount and San Diego State at the Campbell/Cartier Classic.

MARY NUTTER TOURNAMENT NEXT FOR NO. 22 SOFTBALL

 

No. 22/24 Oregon will face four teams that made the 2022 NCAA Tournament this Friday through Sunday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. The Ducks will face tourney teams Cal State Fullerton (10 a.m.) and No. 19 Northwestern (12:30 p.m.) on Friday and No. 3 Florida (10 a.m.) and No. 24 Missouri (3 p.m.) on Saturday. Oregon will play Iowa State in a single game on Sunday (9 a.m.).

 

Not only are Florida and Northwestern NCAA Tournament teams, but both reached the WCWS last year.

Oregon’s leading hitter is expected to return to the lineup in time for the toughest nonconference weekend of the season.

 

Outfielder Hanna Delgado, who led the Ducks with a .364 average and team-high 16 stolen bases last season, went 3 for 7 (.429) during the first two games of the season but missed the final three at the Puerto Vallarta Challenge and last weekend’s Cartier/Campbell Classic in San Diego with an unspecified injury.

No. 22 Oregon overcame a disappointing loss to Cal State Fullerton in the morning with a last at-bat, 2-1, win against No. 19 Northwestern Friday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
 
Allee Bunker's two-out RBI single in the top of the seventh gave the Ducks (9-3) the lead against the Wildcats and Stevie Hansen punctuated her fifth straight win with a called third strike in the bottom of the frame for the final out of the game.
 
"That's what we're about," said head coach Melyssa Lombardi. "Creating small ball, moving our runners over and then clutching up and driving them in and they did just that."

Triple Play! Ducks Defeat Three Straight Top 25 Teams

 

Turns out Oregon's 2-1 win over No. 19 Northwestern on Friday was merely the opening act.
 
The 22nd ranked Ducks saw three different players hit a pair of home runs and Stevie Hansen won both ends of a doubleheader as Oregon defeated No. 3 Florida, 8-0, and No. 24 Missouri, 6-4, Saturday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
 
It was the first time on record that the Ducks (11-3) have defeated three different ranked opponents in a row.
 
"We never doubted it at all coming in," said Raegan Breedlove, who started and went five innings against Missouri. "We were prepared and ready to do it for each other."

Ducks Clip UCSD, 2-1, on Ornelas’ RBI Single

 

Stevie Hansen won her fourth game of the weekend and Karissa Ornelas came up big in the clutch with a pinch-hit go-ahead single in the top of the seventh inning as No. 22 Oregon closed out the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a 2-1 win against UC San Diego Sunday.
 
Hansen came on in relief of starter Raegan Breedlove in the bottom the third inning with two-on and none out and retired the next three batters she faced to get out of the inning and kept the Tritons (7-8) at bay the rest of the game.
 
Tied a 1-1 in the top of the seventh, Ornelas delivered an RBI single into right field to score Paige Sinicki with the go-ahead run.
 
"It was great knowing that my teammates were able to get on, and to come up just being locked in and have the opportunity to do what I did," said Ornelas.

Five takeaways from the Ducks’ productive weekend at the Mary Nutter Classic

 

After being shutout in the weekend opener against CSU-Fullerton, the No. 22 Ducks rattled off four straight wins, including three against teams found in the NFCA Coaches’ Poll top-25. 

 

After losing to the Titans, Oregon subdued No. 19 Northwestern on Friday night before shocking the softball world and taking down No. 3 Florida 8-0 on Saturday morning. Then, the Ducks held off No. 24 Missouri 6-4 to close out Saturday before inching past UC San Diego 2-1 on Sunday morning.

 

Having won 11 of its last 12 games, Oregon now sits at 12-3 on the season.

HANSEN NAMED PAC-12 PITCHER OF THE WEEK

 

After winning games against No. 3 Florida, No. 19 Northwestern and No. 24 Missouri, Stevie Hansen has been named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
 
At last week's Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, Hansen went 4-0 with a 1.27 earned run average. She yielded six runs – four earned – on 14 hits in 22.0 innings. Hansen struck out 13 and walked four.
 
Hansen threw a complete game, one-hit shutout against the Gators. She didn't allow a hit until a two-out single in the sixth inning, and faced just two batters over the minimum. Neither runner advanced past first base. Hansen struck out one batter and did not walk any.

DUCKS SET OUT ON SIX-GAME ROAD TRIP

 

No. 20/20 Oregon will tackle a six-game week with five contests in the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif., and a road game Sunday at Long Beach State (12 p.m.).

 

Oregon opens play Thursday against Fresno State (10 a.m.) and then has games Friday versus Minnesota (12:30 p.m.) and Cal Poly (5:30 p.m.). UO plays San Jose State (5:30 p.m.) and LMU (8 p.m.) on Saturday. Minnesota and LMU were both 2022 NCAA Tournament teams.

Howard’s First Career Homer Highlights Win
 

 It's extraordinary when a team scoring 11 runs in the first inning and a pitcher winning her 10th straight game gets overshadowed. But that's what happened because of what Katelyn Howard did when she stepped to the plate in the fourth inning of a game the Ducks had well in hand.
 
"My teammates were insanely happy for me and it meant everything," said Howard.
 
The record books will show that No. 20 Oregon registered an impressive 17-1 win over Cal Poly Friday evening after dropping a disappointing 4-1 contest to Minnesota earlier in the day.
