Oregon hosting USC with a chance to make a move for postseason possibilities

The Oregon Ducks are hitting the home stretch of the college men's basketball season and after getting a road split against the Arizona schools last week, the Ducks enter this week with life at an at-large NCAA Tournament bid. This weekend's homestand against the Los Angeles schools was already a must-win game, but now the Ducks have a real chance at making a move.

We played hard in both games and got to win one. We're going to have to play a lot better this week," said Oregon head men's basketball coach Dana Altman. "USC is a good team, UCLA is a good team. We're going to have our hands full. Both teams are well coached, both teams defend really well. It's going to be a tough week for us."

MBB Recap: Ducks blow out USC Trojans, 78-60, notching big win at home

Oregon dismantled the USC Trojans at home, winning 78-60 and controlling the game from start to finish. Will Richardson had a fantastic game, with 16 points, 9 assists, and 6 rebounds, while N’Faly Dante thrived once again, scoring 17 points with 5 rebounds.

With the two Los Angeles schools — USC and UCLA — in Eugene this week, getting at least one victory is huge for Oregon. If they can find a way to beat the No. 9 Bruins on Saturday, then the Ducks should have no problem getting into the tournament.

Oregon blows out USC to boost its NCAA Tournament resume

The win comes at a time when the Ducks badly needed one over a good opponent. The Ducks will see an improved NCAA Tournament resume and set up a huge Saturday night showdown at home against No. 7 UCLA at Matthew Knight Arena.

For the night the Ducks move back into a tie with Utah for fourth place in the Pac-12 standings and sit just half a game out of third-place USC. The Ducks now own the tie-breakers over both programs should they end up tied with either.

Oregon's effort and chemistry shows out in blowout win vs USC

As the season is starting to get closer to the end, the Ducks are starting to hit their stride. After blowing out the USC Trojans 78-60 at Matthew Knight Arena the Ducks are starting to look like the program everyone envisioned at the start of the season.

"We played pretty hard tonight. Our depth was good. We had a lot more depth if we wanted," said head coach Dana Altman after the win. "Those eight guys were playing pretty well. I thought defensively we played pretty good, beat them in every category except second chance points in the second half, which kind of kept them in the game."

Altman on Ducks defense against USC: 'That was one of our better efforts'

Oregon’s win highlighted their impressive turnaround that, stop me if you’ve heard this before, they have become better as the season has grown longer.

Obviously, the return of three role players, Nate Bittle, Keeshawn Barthelemy, and Jermaine Couisnard, begin the journey, but those three put the changes on display Thursday night.

Kel'el Ware showing better play after benching two weeks ago

Dana Altman has been consistent in his messaging all year about star freshman Kel'el Ware. He's commented the need to get Ware to play with more energy and consistency game to game and week to week. After not playing in a win against Utah two weeks ago because of head coach Altman's decision to sit him, freshman center Kel'el Ware has responded in a big way for the Ducks.

"I think he's been good. He's been better in practice," said Dana Altman after the team's 18-point win against USC.
