Pac-12 Softball Weekly Rundown - April 5, 2023

Eight of the league's nine teams are receiving votes in the latest USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll, including six the in the top 25.

UCLA, which spent a week at No. 1 earlier this season, is No. 3 and followed by No. 7 Stanford, No. 10 Washington, No. 18 Oregon, No. 20 Arizona and No. 25 Arizona State. With 43 points, Utah leads a group of four teams receiving votes, while California is third among that group with 16 points.

With six of its nine in the NFCA Top 25, the Pac-12 has 66.7 percent of its teams ranked, one of only two leagues over 60 percent (SEC - 69.2).

The Pac-12 is one of two leagues with three teams in the top 10 (Big 12).

This is a weekly recap of softball action that the conference puts out. I just ran across this today and will try to remember to post it each week. It is interesting to see how our Ducks stack up against a super strong Pac-12.

Pac-12 Softball Weekly Rundown - April 26, 2023

A Top 25 matchup in Salt Lake City highlights this weekend's schedule, as Pac-12 softball continues down the stretch of its regular season.

No. 2 UCLA is at No. 23 Utah for a trio of games broadcast on Pac-12 Networks and a chance to clinch the Pac-12 regular-season title outright.

The Bruins, which have won 17 games in a row, have already secured a share of the championship with a sweep of Arizona State last weekend. UCLA needs just one victory to be outright champions and wrap up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Pac-12 Softball Tournament.

The Utes are the only team that has a chance to catch UCLA. Utah would need to sweep the Bruins this weekend and the Ducks next weekend to earn a share of the regular-season championship. Doing so would give the Utes the tiebreaker over the Bruins and the top seed at the Pac-12 Tournament.

In addition to UCLA at Utah, No. 14 Oregon, which has won nine straight, will look to continue its solid stretch at California, Arizona hosts Oregon State looking to snap a 13-game Conference losing, and Arizona State hosts Stanford in an attempt to stop its seven-game Pac-12 skid.

BUNKER EARNS ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA HONOR

Fifth-year senior Allee Bunker on Tuesday reached a milestone that only a select few Ducks can list on their resume.

Already an All-American at second base, Bunker garnered national honors in the classroom for the second time in her career when she was named a second team Academic All-American by the College Sports Communicators (CSC).

She is just the fourth player in program history to earn All-America honors both on the field and in the classroom in the same academic year. Alexa Peterson first accomplished that feat in 2013, the incomparable Cheridan Hawkins was a three-time All-American and Academic All-American in 2014, 2015 and 2016, and Koral Costa also pulled off that double in 2016.

Bunker, who was a CSC third-team pick in 2022, joins Hawkins as the only two players in program history to win multiple Academic All-America honors.

NCAA softball rules committee proposes sweeping changes, including relaxing illegal pitch rules

The inconsistency around enforcement of illegal pitches has been the bane of NCAA softball fans, coaches, and players for years. The NCAA Softball Rules Committee has recommended addressing that by making fewer pitches eligible for an illegal pitch ruling. It was one of several changes suggested on Friday that could go into effect next season.

The proposed rules would reduce the time allowed between pitches from 25 seconds to 20 seconds after the pitcher receives the ball. In addition, the batter must be ready to hit within 10 seconds of the pitcher receiving the ball. Teams can also choose to put an action clock on the field, but they are not required to do so.

In addition to the pitching changes, the rules committee has suggested changes to the obstruction rule, video replay, and park dimensions, among other things.

Oregon Softball 2024 - Pitching Prognostication

Stability in Circle Could Signal Next Step

A year ago, Oregon’s pitching staff was in flux. The Ducks were coming off a season in which their likely #1 pitcher - Brooke Yanez - sat out the entire season and ultimately transferred to UCLA, and the team had relied on a Freshman - Stevie Hansen - to take up the slack.

Makenna Kliethermes left in the portal and Jordan Dail graduated. Hansen, Raegen Breedlove and Allison Benning were the returners. Showing two can play the portal game, Oregon Coach Melyssa Lombardi reached out and brought UNC-Greensboro Ace Morgan Scott to Eugene.

Coming into the 2024 season, Oregon’s pitching watchword is “stability.” Although a “senior” this past season (a designation that doesn’t mean what it used to, primarily due to the “free” Covid year all college athletes received for 2020), Scott is expected to return along with Hansen and Breedlove.

Benning has transferred to North Florida. Those three players are likely to get most of the work in the circle next year barring a surprise portal addition or subtraction.

PALOMINO-CARDOZA PROMOTED TO ASSISTANT COACH

Alyssa Palomino Cardoza has been promoted to assistant softball coach, head coach Melyssa Lombardi announced Friday. Palomino-Cardoza served as Oregon's volunteer assistant coach for the past two seasons.

Earlier this spring, the NCAA passed legislation that allows Division I baseball and softball programs to increase their full-time assistant coaches from two to three. The rule goes into effect July 1. Palomino-Cardoza joins Sam Marder and Sydney Romero on Lombardi's staff.

"Alyssa has worked tirelessly as an integral member of our staff," said Lombardi. "She bring so much to our program as an elite player and an elite coach who really relates with our team.

"Alyssa is huge part of what we are doing with our culture," said Lombardi "We are thrilled that we were able to retain her and keep her in the Oregon family."

NCAA approves changes to softball illegal pitch, obstruction rules

It will no longer be illegal for softball pitchers to have both feet off the ground at the same time according to changes approved by the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel.

The illegal pitch rule was one of several changes adopted by the panel for the 2023-24 season. Others include changes to the obstruction rule, video replay, and park configuration for new fields.

I don't watch much softball, but having one foot on the ground is a good rule.  The rule was more from distracting the hitter, than it was for a pitching advantage.

New faces and pitching lead Oregon softball to 4-0 weekend

The Ducks’ continued their fall campaign with an emphatic display of speed and power as they finished the weekend 4-0 in games against Boise State, Western Washington, College of the Siskiyous and Oregon Tech.

Oregon’s pitching was the story this weekend with the Ducks’ allowing just four runs over the course of the weekend.

Senior Raegan “Reggie” Breedlove, who appeared in all four of the Ducks’ games, threw 11 and two-thirds innings for Oregon and allowed just one run. “That's the stuff we need from Reggie,” head coach Melyssa Lombardi said.

"I thought she threw really well today, I thought she had really good energy on the mound, worked ahead, and fed the defense ground balls. I mean that's what Reggie does for us.”

Oregon softball finishes fall season undefeated with 28-10 victory over Southern Oregon in 12 innings

It was all Oregon once again as the Ducks finished their fall campaign with an emphatic 28-10 victory over the Western Oregon Raiders in 12 innings.

Oregon’s pitching was solid once again. Taylour Spencer started the game for the Ducks as Spencer, Raegan Breedlove, Elise Sokolsky, and Stevie Hansen each threw three innings for Oregon.

Striking out four, Sokolsky– who pitched sparingly in 2023 – was particularly effective on Sunday for Oregon.

“It was nice just to see her go,” head coach Melyssa Lombardi said after the game. “You could see how much her ball moves, I was pumped to get her three innings today.”

Western Oregon’s total runs were deceptive. The Raiders scored their first run of the game on a second inning single, the rest of the Raiders’ runs would come during innings in which a runner began the inning on base in order to give the hitting team a chance to practice situational hitting. Oregon’s pitchers allowed just two earned runs on the day and just five throughout the fall.

“Big picture, I thought we had a really really good fall,” Lombardi said. “You can see we’ve got a lot of different weapons, you could see we are new in some spots and whatnot. But just overall, I’m pleased with what we did in the fall.”
