Ducks aim to knock off Cardinal in first home series of the season

This Friday, Oregon will take its home field for the first time this season as red-hot Stanford visits Jane Sanders Stadium in hopes of continuing a 20-game win streak.

The No. 7 Cardinal haven’t lost since Feb. 11, tasking the No. 20 Ducks with thwarting one of the nation’s longest win streaks in their first home series of 2023.

Led by a phenomenal pitching staff that hasn’t allowed a run in the month of March, Stanford leads the Pac-12 in ERA and opposing batting average. Individually, senior Alana Vawter has allowed just a 0.95 ERA, while freshman NiJaree Canaday has failed to allow a run in 48 innings pitched.

Ducks Drop Extra Inning Game

No. 20 Oregon received a strong pitching performance from Stevie Hansen, but mistakes on the bases proved costly in a 3-1 loss in eight innings to No. 7 Stanford Friday in front of 1,659 at Jane Sanders Stadium. It was the 2023 home opener for the Ducks who played their first 25 games of the season away from Eugene.

"We were battling, we went to extra innings," said head coach Melyssa Lombardi. "It's just about being complete and finishing it. We needed to finish it."

No. 19 Oregon softball falls in extras to No. 7 Stanford

Oregon could not produce enough offense against Stanford’s Alana Vawter and had three runners thrown out stealing in an extra-innings loss to Stanford.

Allee Bunker went 2 for 3 with an RBI double but the rest of the No. 19 Ducks had just three hits in a 3-1 loss in eight innings to the No. 7 Cardinal in front of 1,659 Friday night at Jane Sanders Stadium.

PD, was there any update or explanation as to the strange call in the 6th?  Why was the second scored run reversed?  (My DVR didn't get the end of the game.)

Hi Mudslide. I am sorry I do not know what the reasoning was. I was ready to post that we were up 3-1 and noticed that it was taken off. I was actually watching the baseball game when all that occurred as they were having a big inning at the same time! I am sure when the articles come in, it will be mentioned.

Morgan Scott shines as Ducks end Stanford's 21-game win streak

Morgan Scott picked up a complete-game victory on Saturday, as Oregon outlasted Stanford 2-1 in a defensive battle between ranked teams at Jane Sanders Stadium.

After dropping the series-opener against the No. 7 Cardinal, the No. 20 Ducks picked up their first home win of the season, forcing a split against a Stanford team that had won 21 straight games entering Saturday.

After surrendering two hits and a run in the first frame. Scott subdued the Cardinal for the remainder of the game, allowing just two hits and no runs over the final six innings. The UNC Greensboro transfer finished the game with four strikeouts, one base on balls, and zero earned runs in a full seven innings of play.

“Morgan’s good,” head coach Melyssa Lombardi said. “She’s got good movement, throws the ball hard, and it was great to see her really thrive in this game — and it was a tight game all the way through.”

DUCKS TAKE DOWN NO. 7 CARDINAL

The No. 20 Oregon softball team on Saturday recorded its third win over a top-10 opponent this season, beating No. 7 Stanford 2-1 behind the pitching of Morgan Scott and a couple of clutch hits by Allee Bunker.

Scott (4-3) allowed only an unearned run in a four-hit complete game, outdueling Stanford starter NiJaree Canady, who hadn't allowed a run all season entering Saturday. Bunker changed that with a run-scoring single to tie the game in the first inning, and the UO senior drove in another run with her fifth homer of the spring in the sixth.

Stanford (23-3) had won 21 straight entering Saturday, needing extra innings to extend that streak in the series opener Friday. But the Cardinal had few answers for Scott, who struck out four and walked just one.

"We call it 'demon mode' — she just has a look about her where we're pumped up to play behind her and we know when she's locked in and in the zone," Bunker said. "I think just the energy and her pace of play is what really helps us to thrive."

No. 20 Oregon softball snapped No. 7 Stanford’s 21-game win streak with a 2-1 win in Eugene on March 18, 2023. Allee Bunker drove in both runs for the Ducks including the game-winning home run in the sixth inning. Oregon starting pitcher Morgan Scott threw a compete game and only allowed four hits in her fourth win of the season.

Morgan Scott’s gem, Allee Bunker’s bat send No. 19 Oregon softball past No. 7 Stanford

Since the day Melyssa Lombardi arrived at Oregon she’s spoken of the importance of having staff of pitchers and not relying on a single ace, yet for the past four-plus seasons the question has loomed as to who the second capable arm would be for the Ducks to turn to.

For the first time in Lombardi’s tenure Oregon may very well have a formidable pitching duo.

Stanford edges Ducks in final frames to pick up pivotal series win

Stanford scored three runs in the fifth and sixth innings to overcome a two-run deficit and claim the series win over Oregon at Jane Sanders Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Led by a standout performance by pitcher Alanna Vawter, who allowed just two earned runs compared to three strikeouts on Sunday, the No. 7 Cardinal edged past the No. 20 Ducks 3-2 in the third defensive battle between the two teams in as many days.

“I think we had plenty of opportunities,” Oregon head coach Melyssa Lombardi said. “We lose by one run, but we get our lead-off on five times and we’re not able to come through — it could’ve looked different.”

No. 7 Cardinal Edge Ducks In Rubber Match

Oregon struck first but No. 7 Stanford rallied to win Sunday's rubber match in their three-game Pac-12 softball series, 3-2, before 1,580 fans at Jane Sanders Stadium.

The No. 20 Ducks (19-8, 2-4 Pac-12) saw their leadoff batter reach in five straight innings beginning with the second, but they brought just two of those runners around. A 2-0 lead through four innings became a 2-2 tie when the Cardinal broke through in the fifth, and Stanford scored the game- and series-winning run in the sixth.
