What Will It Take For Bo Nix To Win The Heisman?

The buzz is already starting.

A gigantic Bo Nix mural popped up a week ago in New York City and made the rounds on social media. But the University of Oregon’s athletic department had no intentions of stopping there, and an even bigger Bo Nix mural was just completed in Dallas.

It would be easy to dismiss it all as a publicity stunt—the product of deep booster pockets and deeper complacency. And, well, it technically is a publicity stunt for Heisman voters, the media, recruits, etc. But the hype is real. And if Nix takes another leap, he could very well find himself in New York City in December, getting ready to accept the Heisman Trophy.

So, what will it take for Nix to make it there? Let’s break it down.

Bo Nix ranked among College Sports Wire's 25 most dominant players list

A year ago today, the notion that Bo Nix would be in the 2023 Heisman conversation and have a billboard of himself in New York City would’ve been a laughable one.

Expectations were not high for Nix’s time in Eugene. As a transfer, he was rated as a 3-star recruit by 247 Sports, despite being a 5-star recruit in high school.

After a dismal start to the season against Georgia, the little hope most Duck fans had for Nix to start the season was washed away. They clamored for Ty Thompson or wrote the season off.

Three weeks later at Washington State, everyone changed their tune.

After a pick-six late in the first half, Nix was electric. He led the Ducks to a comeback victory in a game that would’ve derailed Oregon’s season if it had ended up a loss. He didn’t stop there, and continued to dazzle fans all season.

Path to the CFP, #9: Like Father, Like Son for Tuioti and Martin

It’s hard enough playing a sport a parent has a vested interest in; the potential to over-meddle, let alone strike fear of perfection, is right there.

Now imagine not only playing the same sport your father coaches but doing so on the same team, with hundreds of thousands of eyes on you to live up to the name and do so quickly.

Thanks to their performances so far while in Eugene, that’s the situation facing Cole Martin and Teitum Tuioti.

Oregon football's defensive backs working to build chemistry

Another overhauled unit for the Oregon football team through the transfer portal, the Ducks added five defensive backs from the portal and another nine through their 2023 recruiting class.

That emphasis came from an up-and-down 2022 campaign for the Ducks’ secondary. Despite some highlights, more often than not Oregon’s backfield had a hard time keeping up with the best of the Pac-12’s passing offenses, finishing eighth in the conference in passing defense.

But adding proven defenders like Evan Williams (Fresno State), Tysheem Johnson (Ole Miss), Khyree Jackson (Alabama), and Nikko Reed (Colorado), has pushed the defensive back competition so far this fall.

Added on to longtime Ducks like Steve Stephens, Dontae Manning, Trikweze Bridges, and Bryan Addison has created a good problem for Oregon’s coaching staff.

Is Dan Lanning being overlooked as a coach going into 2023?

In his first year as a head coach at any level, Dan Lanning succeeded.

Sure, there were a couple of bumps along the way, but Lanning led the Oregon Ducks to a 10-3 season in a strong Pac-12 conference, capping it off with a bowl game win over the North Carolina Tar Heels.

After a reality check win Week 1 vs. the defending national champion, and eventual two-time defending champion Georgia Bulldogs, the Ducks were able to rattle off eight straight wins before an injury to QB Bo Nix derailed things late in the year.

Yes, losses against your two rivals, Washington and Oregon State, are always hard to get past for fans, but in the grand scheme of things, Lanning proved in his first year at the helm that he is extremely capable of doing great things with the Ducks.

So is he being overlooked going into his second year?

'We're going to follow him': Oregon quarterback Bo Nix leads the Ducks' offense and more

The evolution of Bo Nix is ongoing as Oregon’s starting quarterback enters his fifth season of college football.

But this much is certain: when Nix straps on his helmet for the 15th-ranked Ducks’ opening game against Portland State Saturday afternoon at Autzen Stadium, Oregon’s high hopes and lofty expectations rest predominantly on the shoulders — as well as right arm and legs — of its senior signal caller.

“It’s no secret we have a really good quarterback,” coach Dan Lanning said earlier this summer. “We’re going to lean on him.”

By all accounts, Nix, 23, is up to the task.

CollegeWire Pac-12 writers selects Heisman and conference winners

After this season, the five CollegeWire writers who cover Pac-12 sports and our respective teams will no longer be able to get together and discuss how the Conference of Champions is going. Oregon and USC are moving to the Big Ten and Colorado is going back to some old stomping grounds in the Big XII.

So to celebrate, or more like, commiserate, we got together to talk about how the 2023 Pac-12 season will go. In separate articles, we went over each schedule (USC, Oregon, Colorado) and picked the winner of each game.

We also discussed who is going to win the Heisman Trophy and which two teams will meet up in Vegas and win the very last Pac-12 football title. It’s hard to believe that is the case, but here we are.

I think this is way off the mark but please serve me some of that Pate. Goose, not Duck.

If Pate's picks were to come to fruition it would be Ohio State and Penn State in the Rose Bowl and Oregon vs. Bama (GULP) in the Sugar Bowl.

For this prediction to happen, Ohio State would have to finish 12-1/13-0 with Penn State at 11-1 getting in as a non-conference champ. I don't see this happening. The Rose Bowl would be a repeat of PSU at tOSU during the regular season. Again, I do not see this happening.

Has Pate seen UGA's schedule? Roll the ball out on the field for 10 or 11 victories. It stinks that LSU will be down its best DL guy, thank you new NCAA boss Charlie Baker, for this, the Reggie Bush defamation suit, and the yo-yo in regard to Jim Harbaugh's penalty (meet the new boss, same as the old boss) but I, FWIW, see the following happening.

1. Georgia vs. 4. Clemson - Sugar Bowl

2. Ohio State vs. 3. Oregon - Rose Bowl

Bama could have easily lost 4 and not 2 games last season. The quarterback situation at Bama is a mess. Bryce Young is in the NFL and not around to bail out Bama. Clemson gets FSU and Notre Dame in Death Valley. And I think Clemson will double up FSU in the ACC champ game. Other than a fortunate opening win against LSU last season, FSU's wins came mostly against teams with losing or .500 records. IMO, FSU is this season's 2022 Texas A+M.

Sallee at CBS got this right about Oregon.  The Pac-12 media people, especially Jon Wilner and the AP pollsters were, evidently, lazy doing in their homework.  If they were thorough they would see what Josh Pate, Justin Hopkins and Barrett Sallee sees.

Oregon: It seems like the college football world forgot that, up until quarterback Bo Nix' injury, the Ducks were squarely in the Pac-12 title mix. Why would that change this year? It shouldn't. Nix is back, the running back corps is fantastic, and coach Dan Lanning has built the Ducks like an SEC team on the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. All their defense has to be is adequate, and the Nix-run offense will take it from there. It's Oregon, not USC, that is the true playoff contender out West. -- Sallee

Popular CPF analyst picks Oregon to make the College Football Playoff

With the college football season now underway, the time for predictions is coming to a close, and the time for results is beginning. However, I want to highlight one recent end-of-season prediction before we get too far into the 2023 season.

On Sunday, Josh Pate of 247 Sports announced his picks to win each Power 5 conference as well as who will make up the College Football Playoff this season. Contrary to the opinion of most analysts, Pate predicted that the Oregon Ducks will not only win the Pac-12 in their final year in the conference but will also make the College Football Playoff as a three-seed.

“I think Oregon’s the most underrated team in the Pac-12,” Pate said on his live show.

Pate had plenty more praise for the Ducks’ 2023 team specifically about Bo Nix and the defensive line, but he also highlighted that there are plenty of other contenders in the Pac-12 this season saying, “It’s anybody’s ballgame.”

One of the reasons Pate values Oregon more than most of the media is his belief in the Ducks’ offensive line.

Oregon Football: A dozen juicy prop bets for the Ducks in 2023

The start of the 2023 college football season is less than a week away for the Oregon Ducks, and as the first kick against Portland State fast approaches on Saturday afternoon in Autzen Stadium, football fans across the nation are likely heading to their local sportsbooks and working to get a few futures bets in before the markets close.

For those who aren’t familiar with what a “futures” or “prop” bet is, it’s simple. Basically, it’s a wager that has to do with a season-long outcome, rather than a game score or prediction.

There are game props as well, which might ask you to wager on whether or not Ducks’ running back Bucky Irving will rush for more or less than 100 yards on Saturday vs. the Vikings, but today we are looking at the long-term wagers.

Around the Pac-12: Loaded conference begins farewell tour in search of elusive College Football Playoff bid

In a cruel twist of fate, the Conference of Champions will enter its farewell tour in a position to contend for something that has eluded it for the better part of the last two decades.

A … well … championship.

The Pac-12 is so stacked with talent and top-end teams, it could pose a legitimate threat to the normal cluster of contenders shortly before more than a century of history and tradition are obliterated and scattered across the country.

The conference enters the season with five teams ranked in the Associated Press Top 25, as the USC Trojans (6), Washington Huskies (10), Utah Utes (14), Oregon Ducks (15) and Oregon State Beavers (18) cracked the preseason poll. Only one conference — the mighty SEC — boasts more (six).

The Pac-12 is loaded with star power, featuring a returning Heisman Trophy winner, six preseason AP All-Americans, an impressive list of high-profile quarterbacks and multiple players projected to land in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft.

Trav's Ten Takeaways: Mega Season Preview

We’re back!

Super excited to get started with football, and excited to see where the Ducks end up in 2023. The sting of last season remains, at least with me following a November that couldn’t have gone much worse.

Really hope we have a season that makes us forget about two of the more painful losses I can remember.

Going into 2023, the pieces are there to get to the CFP. Between a top QB, high-end pieces depth at both RB and WR, and an underrated OL, there is no reason this offense shouldn’t remain top 10 nationally.

I’m a big fan of Will Stein and don’t expect our unit to skip a beat. Because of that, the defense simply needs to be solid to good, and you find yourself with a team that could be special.

When you add up year two in the system, the hiring of Chris Hampton at DC, and the additions of Evan Williams, Jordan Burch, Jestin Jacobs, Khyree Jackson, Nikko Reed, and Tysheem Johnson, it’s hard not to expect a top 40 unit.

We’ll get into specifics below, but overall, super excited to watch this team and get things rolling!

2023 Oregon Stock Draft: Picking unheralded Ducks with 'The Flock Pod'

It’s becoming a time-honored tradition that I look forward to as much as anything we do each year — the annual Oregon Ducks Stock Draft conducted between Zachary Neel, and the hosts of The Flock Pod, JD Pluid, and Shane Potter.

Essentially, the trio goes through the Oregon roster and drafts unheralded players who may blow up over the season. If you were to think about it as buying stocks, the goal is to buy as low as you can and watch that stock — or player — grow and mature over the season.

Where Oregon's opponents rank in the 247Sports Team Talent Composite

Earlier this week, 247Sports released its Team Talent Composite, and Oregon is in the top 10 for the third straight year at No. 10. In 2022, the first year underDan Lanning, the Ducks ranked No. 7 overall, the highest Team Talent Composite ranking in program history.

In 2021, with former head coach Mario Cristobal leading the way, the Ducks were No. 9 overall.

The Team Talent Composite ranks every team in the country based on the talent they've accumulated through recruiting.

Since the Team Talent Composite debuted in 2015, every national champion ranked within the top 10 of the rankings. And every title winner but one (2016 Clemson) ranked within the top six.

While the Team Talent Composite cannot predict who will win the national championship, it provides a baseline of talent for every team across the country.

This year's Team Talent Composite does not take transfer portal rankings into account. Instead, it uses a player's high school composite rating.

Of the 12 programs Oregon plays this season, their average composite ranking is 57th in college football. Essentially, Oregon's average opponent matches Vanderbilt's talent level...

Bill Oram: Welcome to the college football season that is guaranteed to break your heart

College football is back. Pour one out for college football, may she rest in peace.

Of all the emotions I’ve ever known to accompany the start of a football season — excitement, anxiety, apathy, relief — this blanket of sadness is a first.

ESPN FPI: Ducks' championship odds see a bump; Oregon favored to win all but one game

The Oregon Ducks beat up on an FCS school in the first week of the 2023 season, beating the Portland State Vikings 81-7.

A lot of Oregon fans and college football fans, in general, are looking past the result as much more than a beatdown on a tilted field. However, the stat tabulators that work for the ESPN Football Power Index seem incredibly impressed by the Ducks’ performance.

After each week of the season, we like to look back at the ESPN FPI and see how the projections change based on the previous result.

For the Ducks — who were favored to win all but two games coming into the season — the expectations have gone up. Oregon is now favored to win all but one game in the season, and in that single game, the percent chance at a victory went up.

On top of that, the Ducks saw their odds to win the Pac-12, make it to the College Football Playoff, and win the national championship all rise as well.

Take a look at the latest FPI predictions following Week 1...

Pac-12 Power Rankings Week 2

What we get though is maybe the most loaded conference we've seen in some time as five Pac-12 teams are ranked inside the Top 25 by major polls and seven or eight teams could make a bowl game.

Who were the 10 best defensive players for the Ducks in 2023 according to PFF?

The Oregon Ducks’ defense in 2023 was a breath of fresh after experiencing the Ducks’ shaky defense in 2022. There were still problems — particularly in the secondary when Oregon was playing Washington — but overall this year’s defense was a strong unit.

After the culmination of the 2023 season, Pro Football Focus (PFF) finalized their season grades for every player in college football. PFF grades players based on their overall performance, as well as in specific aspects of the game.

Today, I’m looking at the 10 Ducks defenders with the highest overall grades in 2023.

Lastly, this list only includes players with more than 200 snaps, so players like Rodrick Pleasant — whose defensive grade of 87.1 was the highest on the team — aren’t included due to a lack of snaps...

My five biggest takeaways from Oregon's 2023 football season

Apologies for the delay in posting my parting thoughts from Oregon's 2023 season.

Two days after the team's Fiesta Bowl victory I walked into a ladder hanging off the back of a work truck. It whacked me pretty good and I've been in concussion protocol ever since.

Sitting in a dark room listening to podcasts and audiobooks for 11 straight days wasn't ideal, but it did allow me ample time to think through this past season.

Finally, about 10 days later than initially anticipated, I've put together my biggest takeaways from the season.

This was a special year for Oregon football. It could've been even more special. But I think it's hard to argue that Oregon isn't the best-positioned team out west to win big right now, and that's among what I took away from 2023...
