UO, RICE SET TO BATTLE IN WNIT SECOND ROUND

Oregon will host Rice in the second round of the 2023 WNIT Monday night after a convincing 96-57 win over North Dakota State Friday. Rice ousted BYU in Provo Friday, 71-67, to advance to take on the Ducks. The Ducks' 96 points and 39-point margin of victory marked program highs in the WNIT.

Monday's matchup with the Owls will be the first-ever meeting between the teams. Rice went 23-8 during the regular season and earned a third-place finish in the Conference-USA standings at 13-7.

UO made its eighth all-time appearance in the WNIT, as the Ducks now boast a 19-5 record in the postseason tournament. Oregon claimed the 2002 WNIT title in addition to winning the 1989 NWIT championship. In its last trip to the WNIT in 2016, Oregon reached the semifinals.

What to make of Te-Hina Paopao's junior season, and more Oregon WNIT storylines

The Ducks opened the season with a 13-4 record with Paopao thriving as a secondary scoring option and primary distributor. She averaged 12.9 points per game over that stretch on relatively efficient shooting splits (46.7 percent from the field and 37.2 percent from three) while dishing out assists at a team-best rate of 4.1 per game.

Then she hit a mental wall. Paopao admits the next five weeks of basketball were the toughest of her life. Normally a confident and quick decision maker, she began to second-guess and found herself stuck for a nine-game stretch in which the team dropped eight of nine games.

"I've never experienced that... like I was stuck in it, so that was hard for me," Paopao said this past Wednesday. "I think a lot of it was being hesitant and questioning decisions I was making."

DUCKS PLAYING TO MAXIMIZE WNIT OPPORTUNITY

With the right mindset, the Ducks are capable of beating anyone in the field. They'll have home court advantage on their side too, as the WNIT does not feature any neutral site games, potentially allowing the Ducks to play games at Matthew Knight Arena for the duration.

The Ducks may run into a scheduling conflict should they advance to the WNIT championship game on April 1 though. Matthew Knight Arena is set to host Paw Patrol that night, meaning they'd likely play at the opposing team's home site.

Live WBB Updates: Ducks to face Rice in WNIT second round tilt

The Ducks (18-14) are looking to make the most of their first WNIT appearance since 2016. The first chapter was an undoubted success with the Ducks trampling the North Dakota State Bison 96-57 in the opening round.

The Rice Owls enter with a 23-8 record after finishing third in Conference USA this season. The Owls bested BYU in Provo last weekend to earn a second round berth and will once again aim to pull a road upset on Monday night.

Rice won the 2021 WNIT in what was current Washington coach Tina Langley's final season as head coach. Lindsay Edmonds has continued the upward trajectory in her two seasons.

WBB recap: Ducks pressure Rice into turnovers and advance in WNIT

When the Oregon Ducks women’s basketball team decides to turn up the defensive pressure, not many teams can handle it. Rice proved it was incapable of handling the Duck press in the third quarter and what was a close game turned into a rout.

Oregon advanced to the WNIT third round with the 78-53 win over the Owls. A 23-9 third quarter turned a good game into the blowout. The Ducks had three players in double figures and center Phillipina Kyei just missed a triple-double in points, rebounds and blocks. She was dominating inside the paint and Rice never found an answer for the 6-foot-8 Kyei.

Ducks use big second half to dispatch Rice in WNIT second round

Twenty minutes of subpar basketball left the Matthew Knight Arena faithful clamoring, as the Ducks clung to a three-point halftime edge.

The second 20 were much more satisfying for the 2,591 in attendance with the Ducks winning that half by 22 points as they blew the doors off Rice 78-53 en route to a second round WNIT victory.

What was the difference?

Defensive intensity. After forcing just one turnover in the first 20 minutes, Oregon opened the second half with full court pressure and promptly forced six third quarter turnovers with a few more in the fourth frame.

Second-Half Surge Fuels Second-Round Win

Up three at halftime, the Oregon women's basketball team broke open Monday's second-round WNIT game in the third quarter, on the way to a 78-53 victory over Rice before 2,591 fans in Matthew Knight Arena.

The Ducks (19-14) were up 41-38 early in the third before closing out the quarter on a 16-2 run, including nine points from freshman Grace VanSlooten. She scored 13 of her 17 points in the second half, helping the UO women follow up Friday's first-round blowout of North Dakota State with another comfortable win Monday.

"At halftime Kelly (Graves) came in and just said we need to turn this around," VanSlooten said. "He knew we looked like a different team than we had (Friday), and we all knew that too. So I think we went out there and really picked up our defense, and that obviously leads to our offense."

Oregon Women’s Basketball Advances To Super 16

Fans feasted on a serving of hot Ducks over cold Rice.

Up to the half, the Ducks had let a far less talented team than Oregon stay with them. That ended going into the third quarter. The Ducks came out of the break playing much more physically then they had in the first half. Grace VanSlooten especially looked like a different player and took ownership of the second half.

The physical play rattled the Owls’ cages, and the Ducks began to distance themselves from Rice starting with a 16-2 run to end the third and put Oregon up 57-40. The Ducks only allowed nine points in the third period.

The energy and speed of offense and defense continued in the fourth, as Oregon did a fine job of keeping pressure on the Owls and finding baskets. In the fourth, the Ducks picked up some help from the bench as well.
