Great article today Ryan!  Love it.

Best line: "Sad to see for the other West coast schools if we are being honest. But as an Oregon fan it is delicious."

I've been a fan my entire life, and I have never felt this confident in a team. I used to hope beyond hope we could win it all, and we came close! But today I would be totally unsurprised if we lifted the trophy at the end.

And I'll be even more confident next year than I am this year, because the next set of guys looks fantastic as well!

Delicious is the only way I can describe it!

Reminds me of when Chip was running the hurry up offense and programs complained about how it should be illegal or they should make a rule against it.

We now have Oregon making waves with their recruiting and NIL program.

If I remember correctly back when this much noise was made, we did pretty well, and the rest of college football played catch up.

This time let's put the program across the goal line and get that national title! Great article and ponder point Ryan!

I think it comes from the same place as the hurry-up complaints: jealousy.

Teams want their own school to be on the cutting edge, not us!

Great article Ryan. It is fun to see the LA market so "Ryled" up!

Lanning may not have won a Natty yet, or even a conference championship, but he has only lost to 3 teams in two years and by less than 4 points each time

(well, all except UGA) for a total of 5 losses.

Our roster has never been so loaded with blue-chip studs, and they keep bringing in stud after stud.

As an old Duck myself, this is amazing to see!

I believe Dan the Man will get us a Natty sooner, rather then later.

And then the USuC whiners will really get their panties twisted in knots!

And on the day they win it all, the other schools will say we "bought" our success because their administration's failed to build their programs for the times we are living in.

No one seems to think tOSU is "buying" players, even though their NIL department is flourishing.

Interesting thought....people seem to have a bigger problem with Oregon's success than other teams.

I think when a non-traditional power, like UO, start to have high-levels of success that many teams who see themselves as "blue bloods" take it as an affront to the sport. As if only teams that have always been good can be good now.

I've said it before, but the north side of the stadium is stuck in the 70s.  Rubber dogs and cold pizza woo hoo!  Also the choke points on the north side need to be widened.  Pretty much everything there needs to be redone (guess where my season tickets are!).

And please, if I hear "Don't Stop Believing" one more time I'm going to puke😜!

I think that more could be done to give the crowd ENERGY, not just get them singing.

Food, the difference between paying too much for average food, and a little more for a really good item isn't much.

The answer also isn't too far away. The University of Oregon food services isn't what it was when I went to school. They make a breakfast burrito, along with tacos. Indian food is also made and could be turned into an interesting sandwich. There is also curries and bao buns, all could be make into great stadium food.

I didn't consider food because I never really eat at the stadium (unless someone in my group goes to get chicken sandwiches!)

There's a lot they could potentially do with it too. There should be some food item that we are famous for. Something that people go "Oh you went to Autzen? Did you try X?"

Even with additional parking spots I'd still park at the "building under the bridge" IYKYK; and walk any day. Always spots, great tailgating, and you gain 5 to 8 new friends by the time you hit the Mo!

I love the walk to the stadium, it looks great on camera, but when I used to have to drive up from Grants Pass it was a huge pain if we couldn't get there super early. I think a slightly expanded parking area would do wonders.

It't not just getting to the exits, it's getting anywhere, especially at halftime. Autzen's corridors have an unsafe, overcrowded vibe. If the place is ever expanded, this needs to be addressed. For now, I'd suggest dropping the standing room-only admissions.

I definitely agree. I think that a second level of access, which is fairly common in large stadiums, would be a huge relief for all fans.

Great article, Ryan!  Thank you -- I enjoyed it very much.  You really highlighted the contributions of all our recent head coaches.  Boy we have been fortunate!

I am partial to Coach Bellotti -- I think he changed my opinion of the program the most.

However, I think Chip had the greatest effect on the direction of the program.  He changed the national perception of UO football, and that has greatly aided recruiting ever since.  We have heard so many players say that Oregon was their dream school, or that they grew up loving Oregon football.  Current players say this (Tez, Matayo, etc .) and I figure that the past five or six or more recruiting classes grew up loving UO during Chip's tenure.  That had made a real difference in recruiting!

Bellotti was definitely a tone setter. It wasn't like we needed everything to go perfect to compete at the highest level anymore, because he made the program itself capable of turning out good players. Plus, I would argue he was the greatest HC at hiring assistants in school history.

  10. Alright, I guess I will weigh in on the article that I wrote, and my answer is going to be contrarian.

The coach who changed my perspective on the program the most wasn't Mike, who was the guy during my childhood, Chip, who made me see what was possible, or even Dan, who makes winning feel inevitable. My choice is Mario.

I know, I know: not the most popular guy. I don't even think he was a good coach on Saturdays. BUT what he did Sunday through Friday changed my perspective on the entire program. While Chip made it feel like we could win big, and that we would have won it all had he stayed, but Mario made me feel like we should be winning at the highest level. If we could recruit how he could, win conference championships with some of the worst playcalling I have ever seen, then all we needed was someone who could recruit and coach then we would win it all.

During his tenure I didn't feel like we could win, because I didn't think he was good enough on the sideline to beat the best coaches in the country. But that just made me mad, because I felt like we should have been winning big. All the pieces were there, so there was no excuse not to win it all.

It is pretty hard, because without Brooks....nothing happens and we are in the fix that OSU is in.  Yet Belotti raised the bar, and Chip made us a household name...and Lanning makes us all believe that the final step is finally achievable.

Phil Knight was approached often by Brooks and Bellotti, but would not take part until Oregon went to the '94 Rose Bowl and '95 Cotton Bowl on their own.  Winners want to work with winners, and our two coaches had to do it on their own first.

Even when he joined...he was not the major donor of the first major project; the Indoor Practice Facility was named and primarily funded by Ed Moshofsky, a former Oregon player who founded a timber company.

    Charles,

I definitely agree on the importance of Coach Brooks, I just left him off the board in the conversation because it is tough to compare his accomplishments to those who came after. Not having PK as a major part of the program was tough to overcome, but he eventually did. I think he stands atop the list, but I would argue that he came along before the program itself was modernized.

He reminds me of the first guy to realize that when you combine Iron, Copper, and Tin that it creates steel. Sure, his steel was probably the weakest in physical strength, but I will never hold it against him for figuring out the recipe. Everyone who came after had the recipe for steel and went on to figure out how to make it stronger and stronger over time.

My vote goes to Phil Knight and his team that helped change the Oregon brand.

Btw…Brooks recruited a local QB named Chris Miller. Miller’s success with an undersized OL in front of him started our string of success. Miller was followed by Musgrave, and ONeil.

I definitely think that PK is the most important person in the history of the athletic department, I was just trying to explore the coaches here. And I would never try to downplay the accomplishments of Brooks! He was an incredible coach!

There is only one guy who should be number one in modern day Oregon Football, IMHO!

He built the ground everyone stood on, whole foundation of coaches support staff the other coaches fed off. He built the soul, the culture of Oregon football  with innovating from Reggie Ogburn to any of the other innovative risky moves. He also showed Oregon supported coaches like no other, stayed with a talented coach with a losing record.

Rich Brooks is number one and everyone needs to remember that! I am not going to apologize, but I admit I am extremely passionate about this opinion.

    images.jpeg

Just wanted to say that I was definitely not trying to minimize RB in the article! He is probably the most important coach of any department in school history. You don't have modern football the way it is in Eugene without him, and I removed him from the conversation simply because he didn't have the backing that the other coaches enjoyed, so from an outside perspective he is "less accomplished".

I don't agree with that at all, because taking the program from not good to respectable was a massive feat, especially with UW being what they were in the 90's, USC being an ever-present threat, and there not being a massive amount of local talent. I like Brooks so much I made him the cover photo, that says a ton!

  14. Seems to be a fair amount of doom and gloom in the replies here.

Not me! I am super excited! It isn't often I've been in a position to go to a bowl game, and this will be interesting either way!

Scenario 1 - guys play, we blow them out, and experience catharsis for the way the championship went. Add a great trophy to the case, and head into the spring with a good final memory of this squad.

Scenario 2 - the draft eligible players don't play, and we get to see if Ty is the guy! The young players are so much fun, and our defense is constructed to beat this run-heavy opponent.

Tickets are purchased and we are booking the hotel now! It's only a 3 hour drive from Sierra Vista, you couldn't keep me away from this game!

    Go Ducks!

  15. I personally think that TVD would be cool to see, and it would make Miami realize their HC might not have what it takes when he goes crazy under a new offense.

As far as guys like Cam Ward, or de Laura: they both have transferred once, so they'd have to sit out a year unless they're grad transfers (I think). Both are definitely dynamic, so they'd be interesting.

I saw someone mention Fifita, and I can't see him transferring after taking the starting job as effectively as he has.

I wonder if a guy like Brayden

Fowler-Nicolosi would look to transfer P5 after having such a strong year. Or maybe a guy like Diego Pavia could make the jump.

Or of course there are the non-FBS QBs. No idea what they look like though.

  16. With BoDacious leaving for the NFL after a storied career (hopefully culminating in some playoff WINS), next year the Ducks will need a new man under center.

The obvious successor is Ty Thompson, who has been really good in mop-up duty all season long. The kid has shown growth, an ability to run the offense he had never shown before, and (just to bring it back to mr. FishDuck himself) a field PRESENCE.

But is it enough to win the starting spot?

I'm not so sure. And if Dan Lanning holds to his tendencies, he will bring in a transfer QB, despite two guys presumably returning, and two recruits coming in.

So my question for all of you:

Who is the WORST quarterback transfer you would take from another school?

Someone you think could challenge for the starting spot, but maybe they haven't played fantastic throughout their career (think Bo Nix, Anthony Brown, Tyler Shough on his way to TTU).

  17. Duck fans:

I'm very glad to be back writing for you. I've got a few interesting article ideas that I expect you will enjoy.

I am back for what should be an incredible season, and I will bring you the best Sunday articles I can as long as I keep writing!

Also of note: I convinced my wife, whose birthday is January 1st, that if the Ducks make the Rose Bowl/Playoff that we should go, so maybe I can get some good in-the-stadium coverage!

The real issue with the dawgs is that they have won nothing. At Oregon the men have won 19 NCAA team championships and the women 14. At Washington the men have won 0 NCAA titles.

Washington is proud of having made it to the playoffs, but they lost. They are also proud of their football title, but that wasn't official, and there were other issues with it too.

At Oregon you see the intent to win and the history of winning. This is why I also urge Cristobal to recruit speed and leverage our Track program. The synergy between our football program and track program has allowed us to be a dominant program in the past and can help us in the future. It is surprising to me that we haven't seen more of this from, arguably, the greatest recruiter we have ever had.

Clemson has 6 men's NCAA titles. WSU even has one and OSU has a few NCAA men's titles. You look at the other Pac-12 programs and they have much more than an almost championship or a claimed title. The Washington program is just hot air. This is why it is more likely we will win another 12 straight against them, than they are of ever winning a men's title. Without Petersen the dawgs are doomed.

The dawgs claim they are a blue blood program. They wear the purple and gold to try and continue that farce. The dawgs aren't an elite program. They are, rather, descendants of decades of losers, and posers, nothing else.

So even if we give them the 94 natty,  it has been 28 years since then. It's been 20 since they won a Rose Bowl. They suck and they're in denial.

  19. 5 hours ago, MaiTaiDuck said:

I think your a little over board about the PAC 12. Yes for sure Larry Scott in my opinion should have been fired 6 years ago and why PAC 12 presidents didn't see the writing on the wall is baffling at best. I don't believe one minute with a full season and off season of Football training can't elevate Oregon back to the top regardless if SC, or the Mutts get relevent. I would never want Washington to be better at anything because I just cannot ever see myself ever voting for them in anything pertaining to sports. Thanks for the info and I do agree mainly about Scott. He killed the conference but I don't believe it will never rebound with the right guy in charge. Anyone ever hear of Merton Hanks?

I would say that Oregon might be able to squeak in to the playoff, sure, but it is going to have to be a 13-0 team. The perception is that bad at this point.

The only way that they won't have to be perfect and make the playoff is if the teams they play look better nationally. Stanford is in a down stretch, so we have to rely on the other historically notable teams, a la UW and USC. No one is going to take an oregon team beating a bad Stanford, a mediocre UW and a mediocre USC seriously.

Excellent article Ryan, you hit the nail on the head with every sentence. Thanks for putting it together.

Your point of the Pac-12 undoing the damage that Larry Scott has made (like you said) "is going to take a significant amount of time and effort" to correct, if it can be done at all.

    Your points of
         - the Pac-12 being out-recruited by the East,
         - going 6+ years without going to the playoffs,
         - getting the snot beat out of them in bowl games,
         - having fewer players taken in the NFL draft,
         - playing their games in the middle of the night,
         - having the best team in the Pac-12 being no better than the third or fourth best team in the SEC,
         - having incompetent refereeing in all sports,
points to the bulk of our problems that Larry Scott and the other Pac-12 leaders have put us in year after year. Yes, unfortunately Larry has not been the only problem over the years but the Pac-12 only has one other president to weed out still. (Can you guess who ??)

The way out of this mess is not going to be easy for Oregon fans to swallow. Having USC and Washington be better then they are now is not something that we fans will like, accept or enjoy but it has to happen for the Pac-12 to get back to respectability and back to the National Playoffs and a National Title.

This choice of who will be Larry Scotts replacement is so darn important and it can't be wrong or the Pac-12 will implode and be gone for good. We will only get one chance at it and the nation of players and fans are watching.

It didn't make it in the article, but the conference needs big games in the conference. Oregon played USC in the conference championship, it was the dream game for the conference but the game was completely irrelevant. They need the games to be more highly billed.

Ah Ryan....great article and so timely for us.  You had me at "Troy Dye" and I could not help but think of the analysis by Coach Boles recently of how the SAM linebacker needs to be "a big safety" in the DeRuyter defense.  You can check the article again here, and ponder the fit of Henry into that role and perhaps that is where Oregon sees him?

It is funny how when Troy Dye was signed with Oregon...he was just another 3-Star safety listed here that Oregon would check to see if there was "potential."  Henry could be a good fit in the new defense-agree?

    Troy Dye stops_Tom Corno.jpg

                                      Troy Dye flattens Wisconsin....

    Charles,

Troy Dye was seemingly omnipotent. He easily has the best nose for the ball I've ever seen at Oregon. At least on film, HT (as he will henceforth be known) looks like he is cut from the same cloth to me.

If Oregon can secure the commitment, he would fill a huge need on the defense.
