  1. Baseball sure is a funny game.  That's why it's played on the field, not on paper.

Here are the baseball scores involving Nebraska, Oregon, OSU and UCLA.

    Regular season scores:

UCLA beat Nebraska 5-2, 11-3 and 5-3 but lost the one that counts 5-0.

Oregon beat UCLA 2-1 and 10-6 and lost 14-4.

Nebraska beat Beavis 7-3 and 16-7 and lost 16-5.

    OSU beat UCLA 7-1.

    Nebraska beat Oregon 7-3.

    Go figure.

  2. Thanks for contacting the sports information director for baseball and giving us an update on the pitching issues concerning the Ducks and Bruins.  As you stated, the tournament would be nice to win but the focus is on the regionals next week.

Highly unlikely, but Oregon and UCLA could miss out on the championship game and still be in the regionals.  However, all the other schools competing in the tournament have to win out in order to make a regional.  For them, I would think it would be all hands on deck and they would use any pitcher at their disposal to possible win it all.

  5. I checked out the schedule and bracket and our Ducks are the last team to play.  This gives our guys a couple of days rest while everyone else is battling it out.  But this scenario also could be an issue as Oregon would play four games in four days.  Will the pitching hold up?

I did a deep dive into Oregon's pitching depth.  These results are based on the last 15 games, when Oregon won 14 out of 15.  I have to admit I didn't know the Ducks have 19 pitchers on their roster!  Besides our starting pitchers, Coach Waz relies on only six relievers.

Grayson Grinsell, Collin Clarke and Jason Reitz each had four starts.

    Relievers and appearances

    Cole Stokes           10

    Seth Mattox             8

    Santiago Garcia       6

    Ian Umlandt              6

    Ryan Featherstone   5

    Jaxon Jordan            4

Pitchers who have made a brief appearance in the last 15 games.

    Toby Twist                3     St. Mary's - Washington - Iowa

    Sam Boyle               2

    Tanner Bradley        1

    Julien Hernandez    1

Will Sanford             1     Last pitched against Oregon St. on April 29th. Started and pitched

two innings.  Is he recovering from an injury?)

This is going to be a challenge for all teams, not just Oregon.  I'm sure we're going to see some pitchers who normally don't play. Keep the bats boomin', Ducks!

Here are the final attendance results for the Big Ten Conference baseball games.  I did not include non-conference games.  Hats off to the Cornhusker fans.  They really support their team.  And what has happened to UCLA.  I was shocked to see such low numbers for them.  They were in a tight race with our Ducks for first place and nobody bothered to show up to watch them.

      1.  NEBRASKA        5,458

      2.  OREGON            2,962

      3.  IOWA                   2.052

      4.  INDIANA             1,591

      5.  PURDUE             1,533

      8.  WASHINGTON     1,217

      9.  MARYLAND          1,156

    15.  UCLA                        660

    16.  RUTGERS                602

    17.  NORTHWESTERN   485

  7. On a final note on this subject, I looked into each schools schedule, home and road games. Five schools did not have any weather related issues.  They were...

Indiana, Minnesota, Oregon, Rutgers and UCLA.

The following schools had either cancellations or a postponement of a game.

    Michigan      2/3

    Ohio St.       3/1

    Iowa            3/0

    Purdue         3/0

    Penn St.       2/1

    Michigan St. 1/2

    Nebraska       1/1

    Illinois             1/0

    Northwestern  1/0

    USC                1/0

    Washington     1/0

    Maryland         0/1

  8. Each website has their own sports writers and opinions as to where each school should be ranked.  ON3 has Oregon as a # 13 seed, with Oklahoma, Cal Poly and Murray State.  On D1 Baseball, they also list Oregon as a # 13 seed.  Joining them is TCU, Cal Poly and Fairfield.  With one more week of the regular season and then the conference tournaments, we'll just have to wait a couple of weeks to see where Oregon ends up.  Just keep winning. Go Ducks!

  9. Depends on what the consumer signs up for.  When I had Comcast cable, I was locked into a TWO year contract.  I could opt out anytime, but I would not receive a refund.  I now have YouTube TV and I have most of the bells and whistles for sport events.  And it's not a contract. I pay monthly and can cancel anytime.  And a perk with YouTube, I have unlimited recording options.

  10. Followup to the NCBWA rankings posted this week, # 6 Oregon State, # 10 UCLA and # 19 Oregon.  These guys are being lazy in their weekly ranking of schools.  These numbers are  the current RPI for this week.

As you mentioned previously, Oregon swept OSU and took two out of three against the Bruins.  I doubt these clowns know that. And Iowa has an RPI of #67.

Here is a break down of Oregon's wins.

QUAD ONE     QUAD TWO     QUAD THREE     QUAD FOUR

         9-1                     4-2                   16-7                       9-3

  11. The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) was founded in 1962, is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball.  Membership is open to writers, broadcasters and publicists.  (That says it all right there)

The officers of the NCBWA are affiliated with the following universities...

Troy, Dayton, Arizona State, Penn State, West Virginia, Liberty, East Carolina, North Texas and Baylor.  I wouldn't put too much stock in their rankings.  D1 Baseball is the best option.

  12. That's good to see our Ducks will be televised this weekend.  Not only did the Hawkeyes lose twice to Bevis and also twice to the degenerate Huskies, they lost three of four to lowly Washington State. The Cougars have a dismal record in the Mountain West Conference at 11-16, .407% and an overall record of 18-32 .360% and yet three of those wins came at the hands of the Hawkeyes.

Oregon should roll over these guys.  Once again I'm having to root for our 'Little Brother' this weekend.  They have a game against the Portland Pilots and then a three game series against the Long Beach State Dirtbags.

Their Big West Conference record is also bad at 15-15 .500% and overall at 22-27 .449%.  All games are in Corvallis.  With OSU winning out, it makes are four game sweep of them more impressive.  Can't wait for the weekend to get here.  Go Ducks!

  13. Hi Charles

Baseball is such a funny game sometimes.  You never know what is going to happen.  That's why we enjoy it so much.  I don't know either why a team can be so good and then seem to fall apart so suddenly.  I can see a pitcher or batter having a slump, but when the entire team does,

that is certainly perplexing.  Based on their ups and downs, I looked at their schedule.

    February 14th - March 10th     13 home games     3 road games

    March 11th - April 24th             15 home games     8 road games

    April 25th - May 9th                    6 home games     4 road games

It's easier to win at home then on the road.  Maybe that has something to do with it.  And there could have been a flu bug or cold virus circulating throughout the clubhouse that made the players feel a bit ill.  Let's hope everyone is healthy and ready to kick the Huskies butt.

  14. Hi Jon

The Big Ten baseball tournament is double-elimination.  12 schools will be in the tournament and five will not make the post season.  There will be pool play to start the tournament.

    Pool A     Pool B    Pool C    Pool D

    Seeds     Seeds     Seeds    Seeds

    # 1          # 2           # 3          # 4

    # 8          # 7           # 6          # 5

    # 12       # 11          # 10        # 9

The games will be played at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska.  This is great to hear.  It will give our Ducks a taste of what it's like to play there.  Should they advance, they will be more comfortable with their surroundings.  I like our chances.  Go Ducks!

Big Ten baseball is entering the final two weeks of the regular season.  It's that time of year when the games are both exciting and nerve-wracking!  Let's set the stage and get right to it. I have separated the contenders from the pretenders.  The top five teams, their record and their remaining games.

    1. Iowa            21-6     home:  Oregon

    2. UCLA          17-7     home:  Northwestern     road:  Illinois

    3. Oregon        16-8     home:  Washington       road:  Iowa

    4. USC            16-8     home:  Michigan State   road:  Washington

    5. Washington 15-9     home:  USC                   road:  Oregon

I have listed the starting pitchers for Oregon and our opponents, Washington and Iowa.  This is based on a minimum of eight starts.  It shows win-loss record, innings pitched, walks, strike outs and era.

Won     Lost     IP          BB     K      ERA

    Grayson Grinsell             7          2       74.2      24      77    2.77

    Jason Reitz                     3          0       46.2      23      50    3.66

    Collin Clark                     4          2       59.1       19     54     4.10

    Will Sanford                    2          2       38.0       39     42      6.39

    Washington Huskies

    Max Banks                     6          2        56.2       22     52     3.49

    Jackson Thomas            4          3        57.1       23     43     3.92

    Tommy Brandenburg      3          4        46.1       30     31     4.66

    Justin Tims                     1          4        40.1       12      35     5.13

    Iowa Hawkeyes

    Cade Obermueller          4          2        68.0       26      94     2.51

    Reece Beauter                6          0       60.1       20      66      3.13

    Aaron Savary                  7          0       67.0       27      74      3.36

The Ducks are currently the # 13 seed to host a regional.  They would host TCU, Cal Poly and Fairfield.  They have  a mathematical chance to win the Big Ten conference but would have to sweep both the Huskies and Hawkeyes and also hope for UCLA to lose.

Oregon holds the tie-breaker over both UCLA (2-1) and USC (3-0)  They need to win twice against Washington so they have that tie-breaker against them in case of the same record at the end of the season.  And finally teams that are on the bubble.

Last four in:      Kansas State, Kentucky, IOWA, Xavier

First four out:    U.T. Rio Grande Valley, Western Kentucky, MICHIGAN, Notre Dame

Four to watch:  Virginia, Virginia Tech, Kennesaw State, WASHINGTON

A final thought.  Iowa hosts little brother this week-end.  Who are we pulling for?  It has to be Bevis.  If they win, it helps the Ducks strength of schedule.  And if the Hawkeyes are beaten, would they be demoralized so much that they wouldn't have any fight left in them when they play Oregon?

There's going to be a lot of scoreboard watching this week-end!  Go Ducks!

  16. Posted

Has anyone noticed the Big Ten baseball standings recently?  Four of the top six teams are the former PAC-12 schools.  And though I am not a fan of the  Bruins, Trojans or the Huskies, it's nice to see them along with the Ducks on top of the standings.  A look at the top six...

    UCLA          12-3

    Iowa            14-4

    Oregon        12-6

    USC             11-7

    Washington   9-6

    Illinois            9-6

Now here comes the scary part.  Oregon's remaining conference games are daunting.  They have home games with UCLA (this week-end) and against the Huskies.  The Ducks road games are at Michigan State and at Iowa.  Although the Spartans don't have an impressive record, the Ducks have had their challenges on the road this season.

In addition to this brutal schedule, Oregon plays four games against the always dangerous OSU Beavers.  Three are in Eugene, one in Corvallis.  The Ducks have some big bats in their lineup, but they will only go as far as their pitching will take them.  Go Ducks!

    10 UCLA

    14 Wisconsin

    18 Michigan State

    Jon Wilner's picks:

    5 Michigan

    13 UCLA

    15 Purdue

    19 Iowa

    23 Michigan State

    Honorable Mention:  Oregon

Yikes!  This doesn't look good at all.  Let's hope Bittle returns and Coach Altman can get some guys through the transfer portal.  It certainly isn't getting any easier being in the Big Ten.  Go Ducks!

  18. This is great news!  Up until his decision, I thought it would be 50-50 that he would return.  With forwards Supreme Cook and Brandon Angel graduating and Mookie Cook transferring only forwards Dezdrick Lindsay (injured last season) and Oleksandr Kobzystyi only playing in two

games with a total of eight minutes return.  I would be surprised if Evans isn't in the starting lineup next season.  A look at next years players.

    Shelstad     guard

    Phillips        guard

    Frakes        guard
