UCLA is losing a lot and I mean a lot of very good players, especially at TE and receiver on O. DTR? Erratic to date in his career. He has had his moments, but?
I think Stanford (although always tough on the Ducks) and UCLA in Autzen will be Ws.
At WSU if Ward, transferring in from Immaculate Word to play QB is the real deal at QB (threw for 481 yards in the 2021 bowl game) the Cougs could be trouble?
Utah returns basically all of its D. Lloyd is a big loss but the second leading tackler from Florida in 2021 is coming in to replace him at LB.
Rising is clearly the starting Utah QB from day 1. Utah's best RB could have gone pro but did not. 2 of Utah's TEs who played so well in the Rose Bowl are back. Utah opens with a W in The Swamp against new Florida HC Bill Napier and watch out.
Arizona scares me because the Wildcats picked up the former starting QB for WSU and Oregon always seems to have trouble playing in Arizona.
I think BYU will be the difference between a very good 1st season and an OK first season.
Nix had his best year at Auburn playing for the Ducks new OC, Dillingham. I think the comparisons to Nix and Brown are way off. Nix played against far better comp in the SEC than did Brown in the ACC and in the Pac-12. Brown started and won 1 game vs a top 25 opponent. Nix has a number of wins against top 25 teams including Bama.
It's a new day and a very difficult schedule opening against the defending national champ on the road and also BYU OOC and having 5 conference road games. Believe me when at UGA, Lanning never played 6 true road games. And if you are going to play an FCS school, why not Portland State instead of E WA? Lanning and friends first go round? It will be interesting.
The schedule in 2023, at least on paper, is far easier than in 2022.
BTW, Caleb Williams signs with SC and SC is a legit contender in the Pac-12 S in 2021.
Great points Jon and it sounds to me as if you already have Nix as the starter. I'm not willing to pencil him in as starter as I'm going with Thompson winning it. Either way if Nix does end up starting I would hope if Dill's offensive scheme avg's 40 points a clip then by all means find spot duty for the heir apparent because I've never ever watched a team at Oregon where if the QB wasn't getting it done at least our HCs gave the under study a chance to win the game and for Mario and the old regime to not let Thompson play was irritating at the least.
I mean maybe NIX comes in and just lights it up and is a Heisman candidate by week 5 then more power to him and hopefully it will show TY what he needs to bring to the table when he does play. I do admit the two HS QBs we are recruiting look like the real deal. So the future looks great and now I'm just waiting for Tosh to show his recruiting chops with 5 star DTs. At least two every year should bode well for the future.

Based on how hard the Ducks tried to rally and the grit they showed vs Oklahoma, I think next season will be better than expected for a first year coach. Lanning will be out to prove something and knows how to get the most out of his talent. His D will also be among the best in the conference.
Georgia - L
E Washington - W
BYU - W
Washington State - W
Stanford - Toss Up
Arizona - W
Cal - W
UCLA - L
Colorado - W
Washington - W
Utah - Toss up
Oregon St - W
UCLA will be a very good team if DTR stays healthy. Stanford is always hard for some reason. I expect Oregon to go 10-2 and win the North again and face either Utah or UCLA in Vegas. USC needs another year to recover from years of poor leadership.
Thoughts?
Of coarse this is all contingent on players playing all season. I believe with the depth and talent Oregon should be favored for every game except Georgia. I expect Lanning to have this team humming to an 11-1 season. I expect Dillinghams offense to score at 40 points per game and Dans new D to dominate the Pac offenses. I see a HC in Lanning that is a teacher through and through as look at his adjustments he made from the SEC Championship to the Natty as it was night and day. Mario for some reason couldn't figure that stuff out and it was all about him.
HC needs to be able to let his assistants do their jobs and if they can't you bring in people who can get the job done. Mario wanted all the glory and we saw how that worked out as in not very good. Oregon's team is or has the most talent of anybody so this guy knows or should know he has the talent to take the conference W/O and hiccups. All those games you have as maybe a loss are in Eugene and I see beat downs on every one of those teams. If there coached up like I believe they will be nobody will want to play Oregon like nobody wants to play my Niners right now.

Love the enthusiasm. Love the that you are here and commenting. But last season's roster at UGA is going to be damn hard to duplicate in the Pac-12. The UGA roster preseason was ranked No. 2 in the country and just a bit behind Bama's No. 1 roster ranking. With all-time recruiting under Cristobal, the Ducks roster was ranked No. 9 in the preseason.
UGA had 1 off game last season. That UGA team smothered a very, very good Michigan football team.
I also think Lanning and friends have a great upside but it will be a work in progress.
Has any new HC ever been handed a harder 1st year schedule, including opening on the road against the defending national champ?
Honestly Jon I feel this is the easiest schedule they've had and it lays a foundation for the playoff. So we will see how this team competes with Lanning and his staff. Every game is winnable except Georgia and I'm certainly not going to count out Oregon against the Dogs because of the talent and our HC who just coached a natty defense against Bama. So to me this should be a 11-1 team and first PAC 12 team in since 2016 or whenever the Leg lifters were in. That was a nightmare.

5 Db's also gives you a ton of options blitzing from the secondary. Looks to really help hide where pressure is coming from. Saw it in the NC and it caused Bama huge problems.
In the 4-2-5, Sewell and Flowe will have a field day. Haven't seen Flowe work much but Sewell can defend the pass well, he is such a great athlete. If Flowe can match, the opposing offenses will never know where the pressure is coming from.
I mean that is one cat I want to watch the full season because Sewell will or should be first team all Pac 12 next season and Flowe if he can play W/O injury then Flowe will disrupt the game as much as Thib's did. This guy to me is a future HOF LB. He needs to play injury free because he's special and we Duck fans would love to root these two monsters on. Heck that's not just it for LB though, Jackson, LaDuke, Brown, Bassa can come up and play that safety on the line. Talent galore.

This season, a school can have 92 players on scholarship instead of the usual cap of 85. But as Nick Saban among others has suggested, find an NIL funding booster to pay a 4 or 5 star's entire cost of education plus lots on money and a possible NFL draft pick does not count against the scholarship limit.
Open free agency with no way to control NIL deals? What's the bidding today for OK QB Caleb Williams' services?
How many schools are willing and able to pay $70M for the #1 recruiting class that A+M boosters just paid via NIL deals.
CFB needs a salary cap and limits on free agency.
Or how about we join them Jon until this gets some sort of common senses take hold. Phil open the floodgates. Just my opinion and it's that we are going to see a difference now right now on how Oregon goes about this winning the NATTY. Are they willing to do whatever it takes with out cheating and win one for the Gipper. Is this a pipe dream or reality. I say Reality.

Going into the final week--it seemed that MOST of the league still had a chance at the Playoffs, and as it is....isn't nearly a third of the teams IN the Playoffs when you count the Wild-Cards? That would point to a 32 team playoff if CFB were to adopt a similar percentage.
Rarely can an NFL franchise stay on top forever as Alabama has, because they have built parity into the system. And yes, it is primarily a passing league, but it is still very entertaining. A team that was 3-5 during the season got hot to make the Playoffs and beat a highly regarded team last night.
I do not like all that the NFL has done or represents, but I have to salute them for the exciting product they have created.
It was fun to see Arik Armstead get a sack last night.
Yes I've been a little harsh on Arik the last couple seasons. When Buckner got traded for a 13th pick I was not happy because he did so much for the Niners and Armstead to me wasn't even a close 2nd. I still think they should have kept Buckner because the guy they drafted for that pick hasn't done nothing except be off the field with an injury. I have to give credit though to Eric especially that two sacks in hello and glad your working your tail off for the Niners. Next Green Bay and hopefully Jimmy G doesn't muck it up.

You can go by the recruiting services and who they say you should recruit, or do the leg work required to develop your own lists. I think it is incredibly important to talk to the coaches who see the players, and better know their potential.
It is potential in almost every recruit which counts. There are certainly 5* players who have abilities some players will never reach. There are also heights no one knows a player will reach without really doing the hard work.
It sounds like this is why Don Johnson is so good. He doesn't just set up contact with top recruits from recruiting services. He pounds the pavement and gets to know where the hidden gems are and starts the work on those guys.
That is what makes the Oregon's great. We aren't going to always be able to pull the elite talent, but we can pull in the elite potential with the right effort.
OK HW please give me your thoughts as to why Oregon can't get the best positional group every time? I mean it's about money right? Oregon we are hoping got this right and they really showed it by giving a DC 1.7 million and they've never gotten that type of money out to any coordinator on Oregon's staff. Look at what Oregon just went through four years of Mario and he did do a lot in those years we also found out he was what he was, not a great Xs and Os coach. We dodged a huge bullet and hopefully Oregon was one step ahead of us all. Oregon has to do this now. Thoughts!

I have to go with Brian's Song.
A few decades back I was on the range at Spanish Trail CC in Las Vegas warming up next to Gale Sayers. Not cool to chat up well known folks on the range at STCC. Many a famous entertainer visited and belonged to, STCC.
Nevertheless I tapped him on the shoulder. He looked at me and was none too pleased.
"Sorry Mr. Sayers," I said, "but I want you to know that as a guy who played ice hockey through college, when I watched you running the ball at Kansas and for the Bears; well, it was like watching a great skater on the ice. Fluid man, fluid."
I got a smile and a handshake when I deserved a punch in the mouth.
Love the movie not only because of the subject but as to how spot on it is regarding race relationships back in the day.
Ways to go? No doubt. But so much better than when I watched all white football teams in the ACC, where Piccollo played at Wake Forest, the SEC and the SWC.
Remember the Titan's, Brian's Song, then the one about the O lineman who went to Arkansas.

This is why it is critical the school, Oregon is as attractive as possible. There will always be slick salesman who can sway a young student athlete. The school and opportunities at the program should draw the student athlete.
You also have to make the sure the program aligns with what the student athlete is sold. Bru McCoy always dreamed of going to sc, but the school never really added up to his fantasy, the same could be said of some of our student athletes.
The job of the coach, and program is to make the dreams of the players come true, if they work hard and persevere. At Oregon the program makes it as easy as possible for those dreams to come truSometimes it just takes one player e for coach and student athlete. That is the magic of the Oregon Football Program.
I will add as long as we keep making student athletes and coaches successful our formula will continue to outperform other programs. Most programs look for coaches to be their saviors. They also can be hyper critical of the student athlete who doesn't live up to the hype. We need to keep more than an arms length from that type of thinking.
If a student athlete wants to go to another program, best of luck. Hopefully we have someone else doing an even better job this student athlete doesn't want to compete against. If a coach wants to leave, congrats on the success. Hopefully you have moved to a better position and we will reload.
Hey HD I feel the same way like pretty much everyone else. Yes Oregon has a lot going for it. There's just one glaring missing item. A NATTY TROPHY in HD Case. That's what this is about a Championship and just shut the football world up for at least one season. This is why now you must recruit at least in the TOP 5 of evert team out there because you need that depth and especially at QB. Sometimes it takes one special player and hopefully it's your QB to get you over the hump. Oregon needs to do everything to get this done. Legally speaking and if that means 80 million in cash flow then do it. Just Do It Ducky's!

Thanks for sharing Charles. Anyone else have mixed feelings about this?
On the one hand, I don’t like the idea that a former employee of a school is allowed to leverage prior work product on behalf of his new employer.
That said, if the recruit reached out based on his prior relationship with the coach, and the recruit wasn’t solid on the prior school, then of course there would be an option to consider the new school.
Glad I have no say in the matter.
Me to. Its is what it is and maybe a lot of us do not like the way this is going, but it is what it is and we must just get on board for now and see where this takes Oregon. Hopefully we get a whole bunch of 4 and 5 star players and if they can start then a Portal player or two.

Thoughts that come to mind are: "rotten apple in a barrel", distraction, undependable. I hope that this program can do much better and get off on a route that leads to young men getting a degree. This guy is just looking for a place where he can redeem himself for an entry to the NFL that is probably not there for him today. People that are mean to women have no place in the Duck program IMHO. And if you think I am jumpping to a conclusion about being mean to women, "felony" domestic violence does not mean something else than that.
OK, Charles, if this violates a rule about speaking ill of a player my defense is that he is not there yet.
I agree and more than likely unless he gets help he has a real issue with respecting the opposite sex. Do people deserve a 2nd chance? Yes. A person with his history Dan can tell him you have 1 chance to prove yourself so just do it. I mean no matter how talented he is this guy needs to show out. This might be his only chance to get to the NFL, not that I think they or some team wouldn't sign him as a FA and then you see. To me Lanning is trying to build off of some really great roster build up but lets be honest Mario pilfered the Ducks. So Dans just trying to build it now.
I think we've seen the last of the old Ducks and every year with how CF is heading it's Championship or bust every year now. Can't not afford to do it that way now if you want to beat the McCoy's and the Hatfield's you know them people from the SEC. Hopefully nobody will take this as derogatory speech it's not meant that way. Its time and I think we are all gonna be pleasantly surprised by the product that ends up on the field. Perfect Storm as in why not us. Recruiting sounds like it just might go ballistic. February 3rd is it. Go Ducks just do it!
-
Well I guess with the new age football now going on it would at least be worth a feeler by Lanning and the staff. I mean think about it this cat is a top 10 talent at the next level so you never know he might be ready right now. This offense with the right QB would kick some serious boot.
Equally you know Coach is going to make this team total whether it's the portal or sounds like recruiting is going pretty good right now so I expect the staff to bring in the best talent and right now it might be in the Peach state. There are a lot of 4 star's maybe wanting to come west because they believe Dan's MOJO.
Think about it his defense gave up over 40 points in the SEC championship and 3 weeks later makes a game plan that beats BAMA. That's pretty appealing right there.

I also like Jon. But with playoff expansion now off the table will any of these suggested changes, which I agree with, actually result in Final 4 appearances? Result in the Pac-12 getting more than 1 automatic qualifying team into NY6 bowls?
What I suggest in addition to what Wilner proposes: The conference determines a minimum amount that must be 'invested' in CFB and CBB. Schools that under-invest get less when revenue is dispersed. Same for attendance. If you do not sell xx% of the available seats for your home games you are dinged when revenue is dispersed.
Something needs to be done to get the 'uninterested' Pac-12 schools investing capital and marketing the money ball sports.
Great points Jon and it's like how far do you want your school to go? Here's the other thing when it's comes to Oregon. I can't imagine how much money Mr Knight has already donated but I 'm sure it's an awful lot. Stack in he is one if not one of the richest doners on the planet. So lets just say that 70 Million was coming our way because it could happen. Does he want to make deals like that because A@M actually wasn't doing that bad in recruiting to begin with and bang 6 or 7 FIVE star players. Now another SEC team building a super star team. Oregon cannot compete if their not doing the same.

I wish him the best I really do, I'm just excited hopefully like QB I want fresh running backs that can see day lite and gone like the good ol days. It just hasn't gotten my blood up to par. If this will truly be an open competition at all positions then may the best player at each position pony on up. I would certainly hope we will see both sides barring injury play like monsters every second of the game then business will take care of itself. So in the top for defense and offense efficiently like top 1 or 2 in the PAC 12 next season would be a heck of a right turn.

He spoke repeatedly about talk only having meaning through action. I can see how he gets his guys to run through walls for him.
This is great to the ear's. Refreshing and the rules are like the Golden Rule if you do them then your enjoying life. I do believe this guy is the real deal. So this team has talent is going to keep on getting more talent close to the 3rd and this team should still be the most talented team in the Pac 12. So we hopefully are on the fast track to a NATTY.

The Ducks open 'at' #1 Georgia without a game to help break in a new QB and a new O and a new D. BYU finished 19 in the final AP. (Oregon 22.) BYU was without its starting QB in its bowl game. The Ducks play 5 conference road games. Since CU and Utah joined the conference no school has gone undefeated in conference play.
Utah bringWe hads back much of the team that twice embarrassed the Ducks and signed a LB out of the portal who was Florida's leading tackler in 2021. The Utes best RB who could have gone pro is back. Starting QB Rising is back. DTR Is returning for another season at UCLA.
Love the optimism but I'm looking at 9-3 or 8/4 in 2022.
If we get the right QB whether it's Nix or Thompson all bets are off and I can think these guy's will be coached up for success and that means taking back the conference and there's just way to much talent right now for this to not be a 11-1 team. We had Hebert and because of Mario's infinite wisdom not could have under the right coaching been the number 1 QB. So talent's there I know now it's up to Dillingham to work his method's into both QBs.

Mario Cristobal REJECTED by Another OC Candidate at Miami
in Our Beloved Ducks
Its like this, who cares about Mario, he clearly didn't want to be here and the way he left was unacceptable to say the least. I thought McClendon was his new OC. Either way I hope it falls apart for him. I hope he's fired within 3 seasons and I hope it happens because why on earth they fired a HC that his team won 6 out of their last 7 games as in you get what you wisheI mean nobody went with the guy except Minny Me and who is that guy a 4 ft 2 OL Coach. That's like hiring a all female coaching staff at the NFL level because it wouldn't make sense and it's the same with Miami hiring Mario. They got it wrong.
