  1. Spring Football was always more for the fans than the players imo. It's a shame that CFB is losing what made it so unique and different from the NFL but that's bound to happen when it becomes more about the money.

Back in the day you'd have your guys after signing day and have at least three years to get to know them. Now it's possible to see a number three corner playing for Oregon one year and against them the next year. It's not even taboo to see a guy play for two rivals. We lost our star running back Trevor Etienne to Georgia after the 2023 season.

Jayden Rashada was once considered the future QB at Florida but those plans fell apart over a NIL fiasco. Rashada has since started a season for ASU and was third string for Georgia in 2024. He is likely transferring again this off-season.

  2. USA wins 6 to one. They earn three points to go up early in the tourney. Canada has two points for beating Sweden in overtime. Sweden is third with a point for an ot loss and Finland is fourth with zero points.

Sweden plays Finland and the USA play Canada on Saturday.

It’s the week after football season, so cooler heads might give him a break since sports news has slowed to a crawl. However, his take is so bad he should be publicly flogged with a sock full of pickle balls. I know it’s not really painful, but he should suffer that embarrassment.

I doubt that he ever comes back on any of his statements. He just comes across as a very bitter guy. After Brady won his seventh ring in year one with a franchise that hadn't made the playoffs in 13 years he still called Brady overrated. A year where he didn't even get an off-season to gel.

Thanks for the heads up.  Yeah, I’ve found it on espn+.  Tied up right now but the US has almost twice the shots on goal so far.

I agree, the Canadians are awesome folks.  I made many good friends while living and working there and still keep up with them.  They love their sports, beer, and rye whiskey, so I hit it off with them right away.  They are a very hospitable country in my experience.  They love a southern accent also.  I never thought my accent was strong until living up there!😂

What's funny is accents aren't accents if you are among the same people of a region. When I had a stopover in the UK all the locals noted my accent. I've long lost any southern accent since I began going to different places and lived different places since I was twelve. Many don't associate Florida as a southern state but we definitely are. We just have a large group of transients living there.

I definitely had a southern accent and am reminded of it every time I go back and talk with my family and friends that have never left.

Rob Parker believes Andy Reid’s recent struggles signal a larger issue, suggesting it may be time for him to step down as Chiefs...

All you had to say was Rob Parker. The same guy who said Tom Brady was washed back in 2010.

La crosse in French means, 'The stick.'

French priests, trappers, fishermen, and hunters found the Indigenous peoples in 'New France' playing a game with sticks with netting at the end, to throw, catch, and advance a ball on foot. Games could last for days and cover miles of territory and games were used to settle tribal disputes.

In the 1880s British soldiers brought with them to Canada a game called 'shinny' played on ice. This game was introduced to England by the Dutch and evolved into hockey which in French is a derivative of 'hoquet,' French for 'shepherd's crook.'

In 1967 the Canadian government named Ice Hockey as the national winter game and the once sole national game of Lacrosse became Canada's summer game.

If you are still awake, please return to the game. 🤓 USA! USA! USA!

Jon you are a great source of information. As a quarter French heritage resides in me I had no idea🤣. When I visited my grandfather as a teen I should've asked him a little bit more than where the adult beaches were located. You know so I didn't accidentally go to one.

First period was great btw. The US had seven scoring advantages to the Fins at three, but Finland is tough and gritty. Sasha Barkov is one of the best defenseman in the game today.

I think it's wrong that Las Vegas has a more recent Stanley Cup than the Montreal Canadiens do. Prime did very well in baseball & football, so did Bo. MJ, the GOAT in basketball, not so great in baseball, never got to the Majors. But, I doubt any of the 3 could have done anything on the ice. I went to an LA Kings game in 1988 against Edmonton with Gretzky, Edmonton won, went on to back to back championships, 4th in 5 years, the next year he was an LA King. This would have been great with social media.

The Vegas owner is all in every year and he takes advantage of the fact Nevada is very easy on players wallets. I think the Vegas Strip may entice some people as well but they've now gotten a NHL, NFL and MLB team to move or begin there. It's going to be interesting to see if UNLV becomes a player in football now that they've hired our old coach Dan Mullen.

Thanks, Gat, for the great post.

Tonight's game, USA vs. Finland is on ESPN - 8 Eastern.

This is hard to believe but the official national game of Canada is lacrosse.

    Wow!!

I always thought of lacrosse as an Ivy League thing.

Heck Yes, I'm a Fan! And I have the missing chicklets to prove it! 😩

It was a terrific start last evening to the 4-Nation (Canada, Finland, Sweden, USA) Hockey Tournament. Canada, playing in Montreal, downed Sweden 4-3 in overtime.

Tonight on ESPN, 5 Pacific, the USA takes on Finland. Sports fans, whether hockey fans or not, know the Miracle on Ice story when in 1980, behind Coach Herb Brooks (RIP), a bunch of college kids, all amateurs, from Boston and Minnesota defeated the Soviet Union, the best 'professional team' in the world, 4-3 in Lake Placid, NY.

But this was not the Gold Medal Game. The USA had to defeat Finland for the Gold Medal which it did two days later. Three guys I played hockey against had sons on the USA team. (My only suspect claim to Hockey greatness. 🥶)

Team USA was outpossessed, outshot and overmatched. So how did Herb Brooks' team pull off the miracle? We go inside the numbers and strategy of the upset.

B1G Hockey is very good, indeed, but it is not that Big. Seven schools play ice hockey and Notre Dame is one of the seven. The B1G: Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State ( the TOSU women are the defending national champs,) Penn State, and Wisconsin.

The Eastern College Hockey Association and the Western Hockey Association along with the B1G have produced multiple NCAA champions. For college hockey fans, the NCAA Tournament and its Frozen Four finale are huge. Minnesota Mens Ice Hockey was one of two programs outside of football to finish in the black in 2024.

ASU's men's and women's hockey teams compete in the American Central Hockey Association. Phoenix used to have an NHL Team that is now playing in Salt Lake City.

If the House Settlement is approved (😧) college athletic departments will be cutting varsity sports so I doubt that any club sport will be elevated to varsity status.

Best of luck to our OBD Bladesmen.

    Thanks Jon.

You just gave a million more times info than I ever could on the subject I started. I watched the game last night and it was wild. The Canadians came out fast 3-1 and I thought it was going to be a blowout, but the Swedes came back and forced overtime.

Tonight I hope for a similar game and am glad it's on more available viewing options than last night. The US team will be honoring the Gaudreau brothers who were killed in an accident this past August while attending their sisters wedding.

I’m a bit of a hockey fan.  I lived in Canada for years and learned enough to enjoy watching.  I always pull for our US teams and I’m a Leafs fan as far as NHL goes.  I wouldn’t at all say I have proficient knowledge but know just enough to appreciate it.  Hockey is a fun sport to watch once you get used to the speed on the game.  It’s fast as heck!

Yeah it's their National sport up there. It drives them crazy that a Canadian NHL team hasn't won a Stanley Cup in 30 years. It's crazy that I've been overseas(primarily Air Force) more than up there in Canada where I hear there's good fishing. But I've met many Canadians that came down south during the winter and they're really nice people.

I would recommend anybody go to a live game and just watch the intensity. It's wild. The Canadians beat the Swedes yesterday. Tonight we have the US vs Finland in the Four Nations Tournament. In the states you can watch it on TNT . You can probably stream it many other places.

Don’t know a thing about Hockey, but respect those who grew up around it, and love it.

I have to admit that I am often shocked to go on the Big Ten network and see really well covered telecasts of wrestling matches, and hockey games unlike you would ever see on the West Coast.

Good-gosh, they are into high caliber volleyball and Lacrosse!  Cool conference, and Oregon will bring glory to their weaknesses.  (Baseball season is about to begin and Our Beloved Ducks are favored to win the conference)

Being realistic, that with all the changes in college sports, and pending lawsuits, I don’t anticipate us ever adding hockey, and in fact, we will probably end up deleting sports before it is over, and ended up in court over that too!

The B1G is the best and most prestigious conference in college. It has the oldest and best run network, the best funding among all the sports it supports and the best academic coalition in the country. The SEC has several schools that could never qualify for the B1G due academics alone. Missouri, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt are about the only ones that could qualify on the academic side.

Pretty huge alumni and NIL bases in the B1G as well.

Between 1960 and 1974, the Portland Buckaroos were the most successful hockey team in professional hockey. Their success was due to several factors. The team owned the players' contracts, maintained continuity in its players and coaches, and had strong fan support.

They were promoted by Harry Glickman & their play by play guy was the Schonz, both would later leave for Rip City! I will never forget "Do you believe in Miracles?" and I watch the Stanley Cup Final. I really don't wany Ovechkin to break Gretzky's scoring record.

Growing up in the South we had a minor league squad in Jacksonville and there were rumors for years that Orlando was trying to get a franchise to pair with the Magic. Many thought hockey would never work in Florida but then the Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers came along and both have won a Stanley Cup since 2020. I doubt we ever get one at the college level but you never know.

I can see Portland as a potential expansion squad if Seattle proves successful. Heck Vegas has only been around eight years and they've become one of the greatest franchises in the NHL.

    Two questions and some info.

Would you support an Oregon hockey program now that you are in the B1G? Do you follow or know anybody that follows the sport? I think the closest NHL team is the Kraken in Seattle. I don't know if Portland has or ever has had an AHL or other minor league hockey squad.

I bring this up because the Four Nations start tonight with Sweden vs Canada and the US vs Finland. I've gotten interested the last few years after watching the Olympics with a buddy. Those boys play hard and it's actually quite engaging if you ever go to a game. The Coyotes relocated to Utah this year but I found myself going to a few games before then and met some really cool people. The players and coaches were all very nice and engaging as well off the ice.
