Fall Camp: Day 8 Practice

Fall Ball Takeaways: Pair of notable defensive linemen not accounted for

The most pressing information that came out of the portion of Oregon Ducks practice that was open to media members on Friday afternoon had to to with the absence of a pair of notable defensive linemen.

Neither Popo Aumavae nor Keyone Ware-Hudson was accounted for during the 20 minutes of practice that media members were able to watch. Aumavae is a projected started on the DL, and Ware-Hudson has had some major contributions over the past couple of years as well.

There were also two offensive players missing from the first part of practice: WR Justius Lowe and OL Michael Wooten. This is the second practice in a row where Lowe has not been spotted by media members.

The Ducks will hold their first scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday afternoon, but that event is closed to media members, so we will not be able to take attendance and see if either of the four aforementioned players are suited up and partaking in activities. We will get a chance to talk to head coach Dan Lanning after the scrimmage, though, so he will likely be asked about their availability.

Greg McElroy tabs Oregon's breakout candidate for 2023

Greg McElroy has been breaking down a number of preseason topics on his “Always College Football” podcast. Recently, he tackled the idea of which players will be the MVP and breakout candidates for Oregon this fall.

As for the MVP, McElroy did not spend much time with a clear-cut selection in Bo Nix:

“The MVP, this should not require a whole lot,” said McElroy. “I think every person that you ask, just one thing: Who’s the best player on the team? Who’s the most important player on Oregon’s team? It’s Bo Nix.”

'Have to earn it': Oregon football transfer safety Evan Williams making a name for himself

When Evan Williams joined the Oregon football team in the spring, he got the sense it was going to take a minute to escape his brother’s shadow.

Early on, the safety transfer from Fresno State was often called “Little Bennett” or “Bennett’s brother,” while others just mistakenly called him Bennett — all references to his older sibling and former Duck standout Bennett Williams, who as a senior safety was Oregon’s leading tackler last season.

Months later, Evan Williams has emerged in his own right and is ready to make a name for himself among Oregon fans.

Safety Evan Williams is proving to be a natural leader and a player whose physicality fits what Oregon coach Dan Lanning wants from the defense.

Oregon WR Troy Franklin taking on a leadership role heading into his third fall camp

Through nearly two weeks of fall camp, competition is still high with the Ducks, according to Troy Franklin. Franklin looks to improve on his 2022 season while also mentoring the incoming freshman.

Year three of Troy Franklin's Oregon career is fast approaching.

Franklin, a highly-rated four-star recruit, joined the Ducks prior to the 2021 season and showcased untapped potential in his freshman season.

It all came together as Franklin hauled in 61 receptions for 891 yards and nine touchdowns, leading the Ducks in all three categories. Franklin's performance solidified him for potential first-round buzz in the 2024 NFL Draft.

The improvement from Franklin went hand-in-hand with becoming quarterback Bo Nix's number-one option. The duo connected plenty last season, and Franklin always seemed to be his first option when Nix was in trouble.

Franklin and Nix, now entering their second fall camp together, look to enhance their on-field chemistry even more, something Franklin says is already in the works.

Carlos Locklyn wants his backs to be key pieces on special teams as well as star running backs

Oregon running back coach Carlos Locklyn explains why he likes his running backs also playing special teams.

While the Oregon football program knows they have two of the best running backs in the country in returning starter Bucky Irving and top backup Noah Whitting, Oregon's running back coach Carlos Lockslyn expects all his backs to be more than just talented rushers.

Locklyn wants his players to be multi-talented backs who can do it all on offense, and then fill in the gaps on special teams and be a standout there as well.

"I told my guys before 'if you want to play in the NFL, there are a couple of things you have to do now. You have to be a multi-faceted back and you've got to be able to play special teams,'" said Locklyn. "If you can't do that, you'll only dream about playing in the NFL.

A lot of people say they're devaluing the running back position or they'll be without the position. The RB position is like music. You really can't have music without R&B.

This game will continue with the running back being a valuable asset. I just tell my guys you're going to play special teams, you're going to be able to catch the ball, and we're going to make ourselves as valuable as we can to this team."

The push to get his guys on special teams is also rooted in a way to show his players this is a team sport and in today's college football you need to be able to do more than one thing as a player.

Carlos Locklyn on getting true frosh RBs ready: 'This ain't going to be a microwave process'

Oregon running backs coach Carlos Locklyn made it clear that nothing will be given to true freshmen running backs Dante Dowdell or Jayden Limar this fall. Both will need to prove they're ready to play.

Carlos Locklyn warned against expectations that this year's true freshmen will be ready to play immediately.

The Ducks brought in a pair of highly-regarded preps in Dante Dowdell and Jayden Limar this offseason, and while both are talented, they'll need to prove their preparation, as nothing will be given, he said on Friday.

"I don't coach in a microwave way. I'm old school. It's going to be a hot oven. We let things cook in there the right way," Locklyn said. "They'll be ready when their time comes. They're learning from those guys, but this ain't going to be a microwave process."

I must say, Coach Locklyn has the most interesting vocabulary of our coaches...

Five-star freshman Jurrion Dickey showing progress in first fall camp

Oregon wideout Jurrion Dickey acts as the school's second-highest rated wideout enrollee ever. Per teammates and coaches, he's making progress during camp.

Five-star wide receiver Jurrion Dickey is making progress during his first collegiate fall camp.

According to veteran Troy Franklin, Dickey has been turning heads with his physical tools while he continues to work towards learning all of the offense's complexities.

"He just got here. This was practice eight for him," Franklin said on Friday. "He's been making his plays and all that. He's still learning the offense. He's doing a way better job.

"Jurrion is from my city, so I definitely help him out."

Only the second five-star wide receiver to ever sign with the Ducks, Dickey nudged Franklin from second all-time to third on the school's all-time wide receiver recruit list. Both players are from Menlo Park in Northern California.
