Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 4 Share Posted August 21, 2023 Will Stein has seen progress from both backup QBs, Ty Thompson in position to be 'next man up' Will Stein likes what he's seen from the quarterback room this fall. Incumbent starter Bo Nix is the unquestioned top QB on the roster coming off a stellar first year in Eugene, while backups Ty Thompson and Austin Novosad are each improved, Oregon's new offensive coordinator said on Monday afternoon. Thompson, now a redshirt sophomore, is three years Novosad's elder, and that experience is largely what separates the two to be "next man up" should Nix go down. "He's taken major strides this fall to put himself in a good position to be the next man up," Stein said of Thompson. "But Austin Novosad has definitely pushed him. Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 6 Share Posted August 21, 2023 Oregon OC Will Stein provides insight on what benchmarks make a successful offense What makes a successful offense in football? It's a simple yet complicated answer. There are the obvious talking points of how many points a game does your team score, yards per game, yards per play, and many more benchmarks. Making your offense click is your livelihood for an offensive coordinator, so relying on rudimentary measures isn't exactly something to hold your hat on. For Oregon's offensive coordinator, Will Stein, there are three pillars to his madness: explosive plays, broken tackles, and turnover margin. Those three pillars stick with the Ducks' offense and Stein's philosophy of the team. Two are counting stats in explosive plays and turnover margin. Those require a definition and, potentially, an equation to solve it. On the other hand, broken tackles can be counted, but the rules are not as strict. Oregon OC Will Stein provides insight on what benchmarks make a successful offense 247SPORTS.COM Oregon OC Will Stein detailed what specific benchmarks he and his offense have as goals to reach this season. Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 7 Share Posted August 21, 2023 Steven Jones and Junior Angilau have earned each other's respect through position battle Either Steven Jones or Junior Angilau is expected to open the 2023 season as Oregon's starting right guard. The pair have become good friends in a short period of time. It's expected that either Steven Jones and Junior Angilau will start at right guard when Oregon opens its season next month. A year ago Jones began the season starting in that spot, and closed there too despite missing most of the weeks in between with injury. Angilau was brought in from Texas to challenge Jones and other interior linemen. He too suffered a serious injury a year ago. His cost him the entire 2022 season after being the projected Longhorn right guard starter. Rather than be at each other's throats over who will earn a starting job, the duo have instead chosen to relish in their similarities. They've become friends. Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 8 Share Posted August 22, 2023 'We can roll eight-deep;' Oregon OC Will Stein discusses offensive line depth One of the primary things to watch throughout fall camp and early in the season for the Oregon Ducks is the offensive line play. After a stellar 2022 season that saw one of the nation’s best offensive lines deployed in Eugene, there will be a changing of the guard in 2023. Four of the five starters from last year’s unit have graduated from the program, and while there is a lot of talent to replace them, the cohesion will need to be smoothed out early in the season. After Oregon’s 15th fall practice on Monday, offensive coordinator Will Stein was asked about that cohesion and the depth at the position in particular. What he had to say should be encouraging to Duck fans: “I think we can roll eight deep, I really do,” Stein said. While fans may be mostly concerned about the first five guys who will take the field up front, Stein’s confidence in the depth at OL is great to hear. With so much physicality in the trenches, it is rare that you make it through a season relying on only five linemen, so being able to go to as many as eight guys should keep the team rocking and rolling on the front line, especially at the start of the season. A lot of guys have played and there’s been some newcomers come on that we’re excited about.”
Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 9 Share Posted August 22, 2023 Oregon looking to load up its depth at receiver as season gets closer How many receivers does Oregon plan to play? Where does Kris Hutson fit in? Oregon's coaching staff chimes in. The Oregon offense in 2023 is expected to be one of the Pac-12's best this coming season, and a big reason for that is the talent they've been able to accumulate at wide receiver. With Troy Franklin and Kris Hutson back as starters from last year combined with Alabama transfer Traeshon Holden, Troy transfer Tez Johnson, and USC transfer Gary Bryant Jr., the Ducks have a wide receiver room full of experience and production. This then leads to the question of how many players at the receiver positions does Offensive Coordinator Will Stein expect his offense to use? "It varies," said Stein. Every team I've been on has played, you know, five, maybe six guys just depends. You have your nucleus of dudes that are gonna play the majority of the snaps but I mean kind of common sense overrides all rules." Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 10 Share Posted August 22, 2023 ESPN identifies best, worst case scenarios for Oregon in 2023 Oregon is one of those teams out west that has big-time aspirations in 2023. Even so, are the Ducks good enough to win the race in the Pac-12, and maybe more? Or are they destined to only be just another one of the better teams in the league this fall? ESPN’s Paolo Uggetti examined the best and worst-case scenarios for Oregon’s upcoming campaign in an article last week. Based on the program’s personnel, head coach, and lineup of their schedule, he doesn’t see many reasons to think that the Ducks can’t win the Pac-12 in their final year in the league and make their second-ever appearance in the College Football Playoff.
