Patience paying off for Duck pass rusher Jordan Burch

Oregon defensive end Jordan Burch opens up about his first 2.0 sack performance of his collegiate career.

Dan Lanning believes his defense learned a valuable lesson in Saturday's 42-6 rout of Colorado.

Establishing a potent pass rush doesn't require bringing the house. In Lanning's eyes it was the success the team had without extra rushers that the team can build off of in future weeks.

"I think we learned a little bit about ourselves. There’s value in patience," he said on Saturday. "We were able to apply pressure. We were able to be disruptive to the quarterback but it wasn’t like we were out there blitzing seven every down."

The majority of Oregon's seven sacks came from three or four man pressures. Those plays were pretty simple. With the defensive backs keeping Buffalo receivers from coming free, the down linemen were able to beat their men and tee off on Shedeur Sanders.

South Carolina transfer Jordan Burch was especially disruptive on those plays. He recorded a career-best 2.0 sacks against the Buffaloes. The junior now has 3.0 sacks over the past two games...

Oregon vs. Stanford: 'Tale of the Tape' for No. 9 Ducks vs. Cardinal

With as many tough games as the Oregon Ducks will face on their schedule this season, there will be no shortage of weeks where it is easy for Dan Lanning to motivate his team and have them ready for the weekend.

This isn’t one of those weeks.

After the marquee matchup against the Colorado Buffaloes drew all of the college football world’s attention to Eugene, this week’s game against the Stanford Cardinal — a team ranked at the bottom of our Pac-12 Power Rankings — is going to have quite a different feel.

“This is a bring-your-own juice game,” Lanning said on Monday. “It’s gonna be a different atmosphere. But if you step on the grass and it means something to you, you’re gonna step on there and try to perform to a certain level because you have pride you know in the game.”

Every week leading up to a game, we dive into the numbers for each team, and certain stats for players, trying to see if we can get an idea of which side has the ultimate edge.

This week, it’s a bit lopsided. Here’s our Tale of the Tape for Week 5 vs. Stanford...

5 Cardinal the Ducks need to watch out for on Saturday

This game would probably take a different tone if Stanford hadn’t lost to Sacramento State. The Cardinal are 1-3 with their only win coming at Hawaii, but they should be 2-2. That loss to the Hornets sticks out like a sore thumb, however.

Stanford has gone through two quarterbacks, which is never a good sign. When you play two quarterbacks, it means you don’t have any quarterbacks and the lack of offensive production shows it.

The defense is playing better and had its best game just this past week against Arizona, but the Cardinal still went down 21-20 at home.

Even with the “rebuild,” Stanford has some players Oregon can’t ignore and could hurt the Ducks if they have a letdown. But after the Colorado game, it’s doubtful Dan Lanning will allow that to occur.

Here are five Cardinal that might have an impact on Saturday’s contest down on The Farm...

LB Hill on Jestin Jacobs' eventual return from injury: 'I'm excited for the world to see what he has to offer'

Through four games of the 2023 season, Oregon's additions through the transfer portal have impacted every win.

Against Colorado, it was Jordan Burch, Evan Williams, and Khyree Jackson showcasing their talents on the defensive side, combining for 12 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and three PBU's.

In a road win over Texas Tech, Tysheem Johnson, Williams, and Jackson combined for 16 tackles, one sack, and an interception.

Every game, the Ducks' offseason additions have impacted a game heavily on the defensive side of the ball.

Yet, one of the most significant defensive additions, Jestin Jacobs, has yet to see the field for Oregon...

While transfer addition LB Jestin Jacobs has not suited up yet for the Ducks, fellow LB Jamal Hill is eagerly awaiting his return.

Injury Report: Pair of new Ducks could make Oregon debuts vs. Stanford

Considering Oregon is preparing to play its fifth game of the season, the injury list has been quite small, but it increased after last week’s 42-6 win over Colorado.

Fortunately, the injuries are still few and the Ducks should be able to overcome them, especially since they’re playing Stanford and a bye week is coming.

Oregon needs to come out of Palo Alto with not only a win, but with a smaller injury list. The Ducks will have two weeks to heal up some and prepare with a huge matchup with Washington.

The injury list is still very manageable for the Ducks and they’ll have their little web toes crossed it remains that way Sunday morning.

Here’s the list of banged-up Ducks heading into the game with the Cardinal.

Oregon football: Bitter rivalry may be ending for Ducks in big road test

Oregon and Stanford. Two teams that, at least for me and probably many other Oregon football fans, have had one of the biggest rivalries over the last eleven years. The Cardinal have won six of those games against Oregon, both on the Farm and also inside Autzen Stadium.

With the Pac-12 Conference down to two schools and Stanford and California headed to the ACC next season, this important and historic rivalry is coming to an end this weekend.

This matchup is among the first of the dominoes to fall as the Pac-12 football season gets going.

Both teams have seen each other on the schedule for the better part of over 120 years with their first meeting going back to 1900.

7 major questions for Ducks in Week 5 rivalry game vs. Stanford

If the Oregon Ducks can take care of business in the first half on Saturday, then they might get the added benefit of an extended bye week before the biggest game of their young season.

Dan Lanning and his team will go down to Palo Alto and take on the Stanford Cardinal in what is likely to be the final game in this great rivalry that has formed over the past two decades.

While the Ducks and Cardinal have had some incredible matchups over the years, this isn’t expected to be one of them. Currently, Oregon is ranked No. 9 in the nation, while Stanford is considered among the worst teams in all of college football.

Of course, that didn’t stop Stanford from pulling off the upset over No. 3 Oregon in an overtime thriller back in 2021.

You get a sense that things will be different under Lanning and his staff, though, with the knowledge that the team can get an extra bit of rest before Washington prep begins during the Ducks’ bye in Week 6.

With all of that being said, Oregon still needs to take care of business, and it needs to answer a few outstanding questions about the team and personnel.

Here are our biggest questions going into the weekend...

5 THINGS TO WATCH: STANFORD

The No. 9 Oregon football team goes on the road in conference play for the first time this season Saturday, when the Ducks face Stanford at 3:30 p.m.

Oregon is off to a 4-0 start, including a win last week over then-No. 19 Colorado in Autzen Stadium to open Pac-12 play.

The teams each have a win over Hawai'i, but Stanford is on a three-game losing streak since that win in the Cardinal's season opener, including conference losses to USC and last week to Arizona.

Stanford leads the all-time series between the two, 50-35-1. The Cardinal are 30-15-1 when hosting the Ducks, including an overtime win the last time the two met at Stanford Stadium, in 2021.

Some storylines to watch come kickoff...

Ducks Wire Roundtable: Predictions, opinions for No. 9 Oregon vs. Stanford

Last week was incredibly fun. With the arrival of Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes in Eugene, we got storylines galore, whether it was pregame speeches, postgame comments, or highlight videos that came with receipts.

This week has alllowed fans of the Oregon Ducks to take a breath and get back to reality for a second. With a game against the Stanford Cardinal — one of the bottom teams in the Pac-12 — the Ducks are getting a reset which will extend into the bye next week and prepare everyone for a Week 7 showdown with the Washington Huskies.

While the game this weekend between Ducks and Cardinal is not expected to have the hype that we saw a week ago, it is still an important one on Oregon’s schedule and will give us some answers to a few key questions about this squad going forward.

To preview the action, Ducks Wire writers Zachary Neel, Don Smalley and Miles Dwyer made predictions and offered opinions on what we might see.

LOOK: Stanford to wear special alternate uniforms on Saturday vs. Oregon

The Oregon Ducks aren’t the only team playing with uniform combinations this weekend.

While the Ducks announced on Wednesday that they would be wearing a green and white uniform combination this weekend against the Stanford Cardinal, it was the home team who came out on Friday and unveiled the fact that will not be wearing their traditional uniforms for the showdown with the Ducks.

Instead, Stanford will be wearing their alternate black uniforms, with black helmets, a black jersey, and black pants.

Stanford looks to be going with the alternates on Saturday vs. Oregon. This is going to be a good-looking uniform matchup.

Oregon vs. Stanford: No. 9 Ducks close as nearly 30-point favorites on the road

It may sound strange, but these are the days that I long for the good old days of the Oregon Ducks vs. Stanford Cardinal rivalry games.

While they provided many tough moments for the Ducks, including three upsets when Oregon was ranked inside the top 5, they also gave us one of the most thrilling and heated rivalries we’ve seen in the entire Pac-12 Conference this century.

Those days are behind us, though. As we’ve combed through the numerous stories about Oregon and Stanford, and how this is the last time we will get this matchup for the foreseeable future, it brought about a sense of melancholy.

While memories of those days still stand strong, they’ve been moved aside for the current era where any point spread smaller than three touchdowns in favor of the Ducks is a surprise.

That’s the case this week when No. 9 Oregon goes down to the Farm to face a Stanford team that ranks last in our Pac-12 Power Rankings. The Ducks opened as heavy 27.5-point favorites, and they closed at that number as well.

Here are the latest lines and things you need to know about the game...
