Speaking with media following Saturday's 42-6 win over Stanford, Lanning made it clear that the upcoming week would be about a lot more than rest. "We're not going to bye week, we're going to work week," he said. "Our guys know what our goals are and what we have to accomplish. A lot of the teams are going to relax this week. We're going to get better." With the meat of the schedule following this weekend's open Saturday, attention will be had on upcoming opponents. Seventh-ranked Washington, who the Ducks face on Oct. 14, will receive much of the week's attention, but so will a thorough self scout. "We have a plan in place," he explained. "We'll work future opponents, and will certainly work Washington. We've got some good teams coming up. Those guys are playing good ball up north. So, we've got to bring our best. It's going to be one of our great preparations. "Then we've really got to self scout ourselves, right? It's time to peel back the layers and figure out, 'OK, what do we have to do to be a dominant team moving forward'?" So far, so good for coach Dan Lanning and the Ducks, who are unbeaten through five games for the first time since 2013. That Oregon team lost a top-10 battle with Stanford in November that essentially determined the Pac-12 champion that year. This Oregon squad could very well be playing in a similar game on Oct. 14 when it heads to Seattle. Through five weeks, few running backs in the Pac-12 have been more productive than Jordan James. The sophomore ranks sixth in yards gained (297), and is tops in both yards per carry average (8.7) and rushing touchdowns (7). His rush efficiency and pay dirt propensity hold up well nationally too, as he's top 10 in both categories. It's been quite the start to the season for James, who a year ago handled short yardage and goal line opportunities almost exclusively, finishing with five rushing scores but with only a 4.1 yards per carry average. The bye week arrives with the team 5-0 with seven remaining conference games following it. With nearly half of the season behind us, it felt the right time to take stock of the team's positional hierarchy. In order to do so, I've ranked each position group. This exercise is completely subjective and based wholly on my weekly game grades. In order to rank the teams, I've combined grades for all five weeks and found the mean number for each group, and have ranked them in that order. I ranked each position group following the conclusion of spring back in May. You can take a look at those rankings HERE. Meanwhile, the Ducks’ defense racked up another 5 sacks and kept the second straight team out of the endzone. With the performance, it doesn’t come as a surprise that many of Oregon’s players were highly-graded according to Pro Football Focus. That’s not to say that the offense has been bad at all — quite the contrary — but after it was the defense that ultimately let down the team a year ago in frustrating fashion, the fact that this unit has been among the best in the nation through five weeks is certainly something to celebrate. We saw that dominant unit at work once again on Saturday in a 42-6 win over the Stanford Cardinal, racking up 5 sacks and holding their opponent to just 222 total yards of offense. Now, as we enter the bye week almost midway through the 2023 season, it’s clear that the Ducks have one of the best offenses in the nation, led by QB Bo Nix, WR Troy Franklin, RB Bucky Irving, and one of the best offensive lines in the nation. In better news, cornerback Khyree Jackson was able to practice on Wednesday, Lanning said, adding that he "had a good day". Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 13 Share Posted October 4, 2023 What loss of Noah Whittington means for Bucky Irving, Oregon RB rotation, and rest of the Ducks The unfortunate news came on Wednesday morning that the Oregon Ducks are not expecting running back Noah Whittington to return at all this season after suffering an apparent knee injury in the Week 4 win over the Colorado Buffaloes. In a second-half run, Whitting went down and appeared to have his left leg rolled up on by a defender. The extent of the injury has not been made clear, but I’ve been told that it is a knee injury, not an ankle injury, as was previously suspected. Regardless of the location of the injury, it is clear that the Ducks will have to go forward in the season without one of their top three running backs, a member of the trio that has been among the best in the conference thus far in 2023. While it is a major loss, there are some important notes to make about the injury, and what it means for both Whittington and the Ducks going forward. Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 19 Share Posted October 5, 2023 Sports Desk: Our thoughts and takes on the Oregon Ducks The No. 8 Oregon Ducks (5-0, 2-0 Pac-12) are off to one of their better starts in recent memory. So far, it looks like head coach Dan Lanning has put Eugene back on the map and turned Oregon into a program built for success. Lanning’s Ducks have put a couple of impressive wins under their belt: Oregon snuck out a win in Week 2 against Texas Tech and dominated No. 19 Colorado in Week 4. The Ducks’ resume also boasts three other blowout wins over Portland State, Hawaii and Stanford. There’s not a lot that’s gone wrong for Oregon through its first five games. The offense looks great, the defense appears to improve each week and the special teams have been nails as the Ducks enter their bye week. As a sports desk, we are privileged with the opportunity to cover this team. We all have different takes and opinions on Lanning’s squad, and it’s important to take time to reflect every so often. The Ducks have played 197 of such snaps on offense and 160 on defense, due to some early blowouts. In a typical competitive game against an FBS opponent I get around 65 snaps on each side of that ball, meaning that this sample is about 60 offensive and 100 defensive snaps smaller than would be expected against a full slate of competitive opponents. The sample is large enough for good confidence intervals on some high level conclusions, unit-level grades, and run-pass splits, but not enough for a more granular examination of questions like down & distance situational performance, formational tendencies, or individual player grades... Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 23 Share Posted October 7, 2023 Oregon fans react to news that ESPN's College GameDay will go to Seattle for Duck game It was the expected destination, but on Saturday morning, it was officially announced that ESPN’s College GameDay would head to Seattle next week to catch the top-10 matchup between the No. 8 Oregon Ducks and No. 7 Washington Huskies. When you consider the ramifications that this game holds, and the two teams who will be on display, it was an easy decision for ESPN to make. The winner of this game will undoubtedly have the inside track to a spot in the Pac-12 Championship Game, and likely be in pole position to grab a spot in the College Football Playoff as well. With a pair of Heisman-contending quarterbacks in Oregon’s Bo Nix and Washington’s Michael Penix, there will be no shortage of things to talk about for the GameDay crew up in Seattle. From Mark Helfrich and Willie Taggart to Mario Cristobal and now, Dan Lanning, he’s seen the different ways in which Oregon’s head coaches conduct a recruitment process of local kids with predisposed aspirations of playing for the Ducks. “I had some experiences with Oregon, where the previous staff didn't really recruit kids they thought were for sure coming there,” Line said. He was referring in particular to former players that were Oregon’s coach’s kids, such as Michael Johnson Jr. and Willie Taggart Jr. — who went on to play at Florida Atlantic and Western Kentucky, respectively. That, however, wasn’t his assessment of how the Ducks courted Teitum Tuioti. Despite being the son of current defensive line coach Tony Tuioti, Lanning treated him like a coveted asset. So, when it came time for Teitum Tuioti to choose where he’d play — he had Oregon State and Nebraska as options as well — Oregon’s sell-job had done enough. Five weeks into Tuioti’s freshman season, the 3-star recruit has usurped significant contributors from last year’s team displaying why Lanning prioritized his recruitment, rather than just assuming he’d attend the school his dad worked at... With the Ducks standing undefeated going into their bye week, it marked the first time since 2013 that Oregon started the year 5-0. Obviously, a lot more had to go right, rather than wrong, for that to happen. As we get ready to turn the page on the bye and look forward to this weeks’ marquee matching against the Washington Huskies, we wanted to cement where we’re at the season and give ourselves a checkpoint to look back on after the season. Head coach Dan Lanning has the squad off to its first 5-0 start since 2013, and Oregon is one of only two teams in the nation to boast both an offense and a defense that rank inside the top 10 nationally. Quarterback Bo Nix is among the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy; wide receiver Troy Franklin is among the favorites to win the Biletnikoff Award, and the Ducks have one of the best odds in the nation to make it to the College Football Playoff and win a national championship. If you were to tell an Oregon fan all of those things about two months ago, they certainly would sign up for those results in an instant. It’s safe to say that we’ve learned a lot about this team through the first five weeks, but there is still a lot to find out going forward. While the Ducks’ numbers look great so far, it is important to note that they have not faced the meat of their schedule just yet. Over the final 7 weeks of the regular season, Oregon will go up against five teams that have been ranked inside the top 15 at some point this season, with a trio of No. 7 Washington, No. 13 Washington State, and No. 18 Utah all in a row coming out of this bye week.
