Oregon vs. Washington: Betting line drops slightly in favor of the Ducks

After enduring a much-needed bye week for both teams, fans of the Oregon Ducks and Washington Huskies finally get to get back into game mode and ready themselves for what is undoubtedly the biggest challenge of the season thus far for either team.

On Saturday afternoon, the No. 8 Ducks will travel up to Seattle to face the No. 7 Huskies in a matchup that will feature two of the best offenses in the nation and two of the leading Heisman candidates in 2023.

It is a rivalry that is as bitter as almost any in the nation and a game that will be chippy down to the very end.

Last week, the betting line opened in favor of the home team, with Washington giving 3.5 points to the Ducks. Since then, the line has dropped slightly in favor of the Ducks.

Here’s where things currently stand, according to BetMGM...

Oregon versus Washington - a recent history

In what has, at least until recently, been a one-sided affair for the last 15 years, the Oregon-Washington rivalry is back in full swing. 2021 was the renewal of a series that has definitely regained its spice after the teams were set to square off for the inside track to the Pac-12

Championship Game in 2020 but the game was called off due to Washington having to pause football activities due to a COVID breakout.

Overall, UW is 3-7 the last 10 times the two teams have met, but 2-3 the last five years and 3-3 the last six, so things have definitely tightened up.

Three out of the last four times the Huskies and Ducks have met the games have been close, with the 2018 game decided in overtime and the 2019 game won by Oregon in come-from-behind fashion, while the Huskies were able to use a fourth-down stop and 43-yard field goal from Peyton Henry to give the No. 24 Huskies a thrilling 37-34 win over the No. 6 Ducks.

Over the past 10 meetings, Oregon holds an average points edge of a little over a field goal a game, 32 to 30.  But the last five meetings? Washington holds a 30-26 advantage, buoyed by the 38-3 win in 2017.

And overall? Washington still holds a 61-46 series lead, with five ties. The last tie took place in 1962.

Below are recaps and notes from the last 10 times the Ducks and Huskies have met...

3 Reasons Why Oregon Will Defeat Washington This Weekend

This week, the #8 Oregon Ducks take on the #7 Washington Huskies in the biggest Pac-12 game of the season.

Both defenses will be tested as the top two offenses in the nation face off.  Washington is the top-ranked offense in the nation, while Oregon has the #2 ranked offense. Given that both teams are undefeated, somebody’s O will have to go by the end of this game.

Washington’s wins have come against Boise State, Tulsa, Michigan State and Arizona.

On the other hand, Oregon has won most of its first five games in dominant fashion. The Ducks defeated Portland State Vikings by a score of 81-7. Then, they followed that up with a 45-point victory over Hawaii.

Their last two wins were both 42-6 victories over the Colorado Buffaloes and Stanford Cardinals.

Despite the Washington Huskies having the higher seed, I believe the Oregon Ducks are the better football team. Thus, the Oregon Ducks will defeat the Washington Huskies on Saturday.

Here are three reasons why this will occur...

5 Washington Huskies Oregon needs to watch for on Saturday

In all honesty, we could have gone with a dozen of players for this 5 opponents article featuring the Washington Huskies. But we had to keep it down with the obvious for the No. 6 team in the nation and a team that will present Oregon’s biggest challenge of the season.

Unlike USC, the Huskies are very good on both sides of the ball. They also have a coaching staff that knows what it is doing, which is a far cry from the previous leadership under Jimmy Lake.

Washington is a bonafide national championship contender and for the first time in the series history, both teams come into the game ranked in the Top 10 in both the AP and Coaches poll.

Fortunately, Oregon has a team that is very capable of going on the road and defeating a club such as this. But the Ducks will have to pay a little extra attention to these five Dawgs in Oregon to avoid the first loss of the season...

Series History between the Washington and Oregon features hate, spite, and dominance

While Week 5 vs. the Stanford Cardinal was absolutely billed as a rivalry game, this one’s different.

It’s different for a couple of reasons. It’s a top-ten matchup, Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr. are both candidates for the Heisman Trophy, and the Ducks lost to the Huskies at home last year, which ended their College Football Playoff chances.

Oregon vs. Washington Injury Report: Both Ducks and Huskies near full health for top-10 showdown

Injuries are a subject some coaches bristle at where the media is concerned. Some coaches, such as Chip Kelly, just refuse to talk about them so asking is a complete waste of time.

When it comes to Dan Lanning, his policy hasn’t been quite fleshed out yet. Some days he talks, but others he chooses to leave information close to the vest.  For Washington Week, injuries were something he wanted to avoid talking about at all costs.

Though Lanning may be participating in a bit of gamesmanship, it appears from what we can gather that the Ducks are close to fully healthy as a team heading into their sixth game of the season.

Likewise, the Huskies are in the same boat, though there are a few more “questionable” players up in Seattle that we will be watching as kickoff draws near.

All in all, it means we’re in for one heck of a contest Saturday afternoon in Seattle and there shouldn’t be any excuses afterwards.

Here’s a look at the injury report that we’ve put together based on watching practice and talking to coaches this week...

Ducks defense aiming for pressure against Huskies' standout offensive line

With one of the best offensive lines in pass protection, Oregon's defensive front will have its hands full on Saturday.

As Oregon and Washington saw in 2022, protecting your quarterback can become the ultimate difference-maker between winning and losing.

Oregon's quarterback, Bo Nix, went down with an ankle injury in the second half of the Ducks loss, and the offense stalled late, helping give Washington the three-point upset victory.

In 2022, Oregon did not register a single sack against Michael Penix Jr., Washington's quarterback, as the Huskies totaled 522 yards of offense, over 400 coming through the air.

Fast forward to 2023, and both teams have done a tremendous job protecting their quarterback...

Evan Williams hopes defense will 'prove who we say we are' in Seattle this weekend

Oregon defensive back Evan Williams has a lot of ties to this game even though it will be his first and last time playing in it.

Saturday's top 10 matchup in Seattle provides an improved Oregon defense the chance to show just how far they've come.

A year ago, Michael Penix Jr. rolled into town and threw for 408 yards to end Oregon's eight-game win streak. The loss exposed some personnel shortcomings and led Dan Lanning to aggressively retool the secondary this offseason.

Through five games this year, no opposing passer has thrown for more than 282 yards and on average the Ducks have allowed the fifth fewest yards per game (153.6) through the air nationally.

With the country tuned in for Saturday's nationally-televised game, this year's unit, which features five new defensive back starters, hopes to make a statement.

"Not that we're not who we were last year, but that we're completely different," said safety Evan Williams. "We have a completely different set of capabilities and we're just looking to attack this opportunity. We know they're going to challenge our secondary a lot."

Bill Oram: With a win against Washington, Oregon Ducks can restore all that was lost last season

You might call it the game to end all Oregon-Washington games, except that would be a little tone-deaf with all the Pac-12 matchups each week that actually represent the end of longstanding Pac-12 rivalries.

So let’s just call it a big game, shall we?

Rivalries are nothing without their histories and Ducks-Dawgs is rich with it.

Kenny Wheaton! Joey Harrington! Marcus Mariota! Jimmy Lake!

It’s all there. All that Back Then will transfer over to the Big Ten.

But I don’t think you need to harken back to 1962, 1994 or even 2019 to feel the weight of Saturday’s matchup between the No. 8 Ducks and No. 7 Huskies...

Keys to Victory for the Oregon Ducks against the Washington Huskies

We’re just a day away from the most important Oregon Ducks’ game in recent memory. On Saturday, The No. 8 Ducks will face off against the No. 7 Washington Huskies in Seattle.

Last season, the Huskies upset the Ducks in Eugene 37-34, and on the road this weekend Oregon will look to exact revenge.

The Ducks are 2.5-point underdogs in this game, which is about as close as betting lines get. This matchup will feature two of the best QBs and offenses in the country. Oregon should have the edge defensively, but overall, this is a pretty deadlocked matchup.

In order for the Ducks to win this game, they will need to do a multitude of things, but below I’ve distilled the three things I think will be most important to an Oregon victory...

9 major questions for No. 8 Ducks to answer in showdown vs. No. 7 Washington

We are just about midway through the 2023 college football season, and while we’ve learned a lot about who the Oregon Ducks are, and what Dan Lanning is making possible for his team thus far, there are still a ton of things that we still need to learn about this group.

While Oregon is sitting with a 5-0 record for the first time since 2013 and a clear path towards the Pac-12 Championship Game and the College Football Playoff if their success continues down the road, the relatively easy schedule that they have traversed through the first half of the season has made it rather difficult to get a great read on this team.

The offense looks great under Bo Nix, but they haven’t faced a defense that can be described as elite. The defense has been spectacular, led by Khyree Jackson and Evan Williams, but it’s safe to say that the Ducks haven’t seen an offense that is among the best in the nation.

That certainly is going to change this week when Oregon goes up to Seattle to take on the No. 7 Washington Huskies.

Michael Penix Jr. is leading the Heisman Trophy conversation at the moment, and the Huskies boast the No. 1 passing and No. 1 total offense in the nation.

If Oregon’s defense is as good as we think it is, we will find out this week.

There are a number of things that will be unveiled in the coming days when the Ducks and Huskies go into their first top-10 matchup in the history of the rivalry.

Here are some things that we want to learn...

This is a game that has been circled on the calendar for months.

After a string of games to open the season that left a lot to be desired when it came to competition level for the Oregon Ducks, we finally get to turn things around in what has become one of the most anticipated games in the nation this weekend.
