Dan Lanning Taking Heat For Decision In Final Seconds Of First Half

Oregon head coach Dan Lanning is hearing it from the college football community on social media right now.

It stems from a decision he made at the end of the first half of Saturday's game against Washington. Facing fourth and goal from the three-yard line, Lanning chose to go for it instead of attempting a short field goal.

He wanted the lead heading into the half but Washington's defense got the stop, preserving its 22-18 lead. Had Lanning gone for the field goal, Washington would've only been up by one heading into the break.

College football fans aren't happy with the decision.

Ducks fall short in Seattle in thriller, as Camden Lewis' game-tying kick is wide

Eighth-ranked Oregon's undefeated season came to an end on Saturday afternoon with the visitors unable to rally in the closing moments.

In a game that lived up to the pre-game hype, Washington (6-0, 3-0) took a three-point lead with 1:38 to play in regulation on a Rome Odunze 18-yard touchdown.

Bo Nix maneuvered the Oregon offense (5-1, 2-1) down the field in the waning minutes, but Camden Lewis' 43-yard field goal attempt was wound up wide, Washington faithful stormed the field and the Ducks left Seattle with their first blemish of the season.

Instant Reactions: Missed opportunities lead to Oregon's downfall

This game between two bitter rivals and Top 10 teams for the first time in the series’ history promised to be one of the great ones.

It didn’t disappoint.

But ultimately, it’s the Duck fans who will go home disappointed as No. 6 Washington escapes and defeats No. 8 Oregon 36-33 in what be one of the games of the year in college football.

In the end, Camden Lewis’ 43-yard field goal attempt to tie the game sailed right, but it shouldn’t have come to that. Not by a long shot.

The Ducks decided to go for it on fourth down from inside the Washington 20-yard line on two separate occasions and came away empty.

They also had the chance to punt the ball away with two minutes to go and pin Washington back with no timeouts left and decided to go for it.

They didn’t get it.

Those three decisions, which Dan Lanning was 0-for-3 on, cost the Ducks a huge victory. Now at 5-1, Oregon is still in a good position for a trip to the Pac-12 championship, but it left zero room for error.

The Ducks can only hope they get another shot at the Dawgs...

DUCKS DROP HEARTBREAKER AT UW

Oregon's first Pac-12 loss came in dramatic fashion to rival Washington for the second year in a row, as the Huskies scored the go-ahead touchdown with 98 seconds left to beat the Ducks on Saturday at Husky Stadium, 36-33.

Down 29-18 early in the third quarter, the Ducks rallied into the lead with two touchdowns and some stout defense, including a goal-line stand while up 33-29 with 6:18 to play.

But Oregon was stopped on fourth down for the third time in the game at midfield with 2:11 left, Washington quickly drove to the winning score and the Ducks missed a potential game-tying field goal as time expired.

Social media reacts to No. 8 Oregon's heartbreaking 36-33 loss to No. 7 Washington

Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks ended up falling to the Washington Huskies, 36-33, up in Seattle. The Ducks had a chance to send it into overtime with a 43-yard field goal, but it sailed wide right, giving the Huskies the victory.

There were some coaching decisions that will be looked back on for Lanning, and some play-calling that could have been different for the Ducks. In the end, none of it matters. It’s all hindsight.

As you would expect, Oregon fans had a roller coaster of a day, falling behind, going up, and then falling behind again in the end.

Here’s how it all played out on social media...

3 takeaways from a heavyweight collision that sees Washington outlast Oregon

Regardless of your allegiances, that game lived up to the billing.

Washington against Oregon. Kalen DeBoer against Dan Lanning. Michael Penix Jr. against Bo Nix. Huskies against Ducks. The latest chapter in the border war was one of the best, and it went right down to the bitter end.

Oregon created a chance for itself to tie the game as time expired and force overtime. Duck kicker Camden Lewis had enough length on his 43-yard kick to make it, but he just pushed it outside the uprights.

And that sent Husky fans into a frenzy, storming the field to celebrate a second consecutive victory over their rivals. The seventh-ranked Huskies (6-0, 3-0 Pac-12) survived the eighth-ranked Ducks (5-1, 2-1 Pac-12) for a 36-33 win.

Here are three takeaways from the game...

Jon Gold: Oregon gambles away Battle in Seattle as Huskies take control of Pac-12

It was billed as the Game of the Year, but in the historic and heated rivalry between the two Pacific Northwest powers, Saturday’s Battle in Seattle between No. 7 Washington and No. 8 was more like the Fight of the Century.

And like any of the great title bouts of our time, this one had a bevy of body blows, plenty of gambling and one fitting knockout blow by the Man Who Would Be Heisman, Michael Penix Jr.

It’s not fair to say Washington outlasted Oregon, as the Ducks had their chance to put the Huskies away at the end.

No, this one was slugged out in last-punch-wins fashion.

Kalen DeBoer and the Huskies are left standing. Dan Lanning and the Ducks are left second-guessing.

And Pac-12 fans are left wanting — wanting to see these two heavyweights slug it out in Las Vegas for the final conference title game.

Two snippets of coverage from Saturday’s slugfest tell the tale...

Dan Lanning takes responsibility for loss after fourth down aggression fails

Dan Lanning has never passed the blame following a tough loss, and Saturday was no different.

Shortly after a trio of failed fourth down plays made the difference in Oregon's 36-33 loss to No. 7 Washington, Lanning told reporters he deserved the blame for his aggressive decision-making.

"I think that this game is 100 percent on me. I don't think you have to look anywhere else besides me," he said. "I think everyone of us can look at decisions made today, and ... like I said you kick the field goal before half or you kick the field goal somewhere else, it could've been a different result. You never know how the rest of the game is going to play out, so you make those decisions based upon the information you have."

7 major takeaways from No. 8 Oregon's gut-wrenching 36-33 loss to No. 7 Huskies

For the record, I would have punted.

My opinion on the matter is worth what you paid for it, though. I’m not the one in a position to have my decisions criticized or praised by millions of people across the nation every weekend.

That’s why I understand what Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks were trying to do, going for it on 4th and 3 from the Washington 47 with 2:11 on the clock, looking to ice the game and pick up the statement win of his career.

Instead, the Ducks turned the ball over on downs, allowed a go-ahead touchdown from Michael Penix, and lost the game after a 43-yard FG from Camden Lewis sailed wide right as time expired.

The end result? Oregon’s first loss of the season and a tougher road to the Pac-12 Championship going forward.

There are a lot of things to take away from this game, and a lot of little nitpicks to make if you care to. But there is also a lot to celebrate — the Ducks proved that they are incredibly elite in certain aspects of the game, and one of the best teams in the nation.

Let’s try and wade through what we just saw unfold over the past four hours and attempt to make sense of it...there are some different thoughts in this article.

Bill Oram: Dan Lanning loves taking risks, but it keeps costing the Ducks in their biggest moments

Lanning’s penchant for going for it on fourth down, for his all-in approach to critical situations continues to haunt the Ducks.

Everybody enjoys a hand of high-stakes poker.

But there is always a sign hanging nearby that warns of the difference between enjoying gambling and having a gambling problem.

With Lanning, this is too much of a trend to ignore.

It was a similar situation last year against the Huskies in Eugene, when Lanning called for a run on fourth down from the Ducks’ own 34-yard line in a tie game with 90 seconds left, setting up the game-winning field goal for the surging Huskies.

And it happened two weeks later in Corvallis, when the Ducks were nursing a three-point lead in the fourth quarter and Lanning went for it on fourth and 1 from his own 28.

You can argue the merit of any of these decisions individually. But in Lanning’s scorebook of risk, regret is absolutely lapping reward.

Lanning is now 0-3 against the Huskies and Beavers, and all three of those losses have been swung by his overzealousness.

Stock Report: Dan Lanning, Camden Lewis face questions; Troy Franklin skyrockets

It wasn’t all negative on Saturday, to be sure. The Ducks played an outstanding game and proved that they are an elite team capable of great things. The ball simply didn’t bounce their way a few too many times.

Report Card: Dubious decisions leaves Ducks with first loss of season

This one is going to sting for a while.

It would be one thing if Washington had outplayed the Ducks and won the game, but Oregon played better in nearly every phase of the game and still lost 36-33.

Head coach Dan Lanning didn’t do himself any favors with some of his in-game decisions, which cost the Ducks the game. The two fourth-down plays and the decision to go for it at midfield with two minutes left will be dissected for probably as long as Lanning is at Oregon.

But winning cures everything and Oregon still has a great shot at winning a Pac-12 title. Most likely, the Ducks will have to go through the Huskies and wouldn’t revenge be sweet if these two teams met in Vegas for Round 2?

Here’s a mixed bag of a report card from the bitter loss in Seattle...

Statistically speaking: Oregon football’s 4th down, red zone offense slide after loss at Washington

Oregon’s red zone offense took a hit after opting against attempting short field goals and failing to score touchdowns against Washington.

The Ducks (5-1, 2-1 Pac-12) scored three touchdowns on five trips to the red zone in their 36-33 loss to the Huskies on Saturday, with the two empty trips ending on fourth down stops.

As a result, Oregon’s red zone conversion rate fell from 89.3% (37th) to 84.8% (62nd). Its touchdown rate in the red zone dropped from 75% to 72.73%, which ranks 22nd nationally.

Dan Lanning continues to be one of the most aggressive coaches in the country and an 0 for 3 day on fourth down dropped Oregon from 80% on the season to 61.54%, 36th nationally.

Here is where Oregon ranked in the Pac-12 and nationally after Week 7...

Column: Can you gain confidence in a loss? If so, the Oregon Ducks should

Michael Penix Jr. was picturesque in his precision, and his tough demeanor in the pocket whilst taking heat from a formidable Oregon defensive line was commendable.

The Huskies made plays when they had to, and they walked out of the 115th matchup in this ‘Cascade Clash’ as the victors, owning arguably the most notable win in the history of the rivalry.

In turn, the Oregon Ducks left Montlake with their first loss of the season on Saturday evening. They returned to Eugene facing a lot of questions and “what ifs” that will likely keep the coaches and players up for a few nights.

Should they leave this weekend with less confidence, though? Absolutely not. If anything, I’d argue they should feel better about their team going forward.

I do...

'I can handle the criticism;' Dan Lanning defends aggressive 4th down calls in loss to Washington

Three times on Saturday afternoon, the Oregon Ducks faced a fourth down and short-yardage situation. A conversion would have changed the game drastically, and in one case, ended the game completely.

Three times, the Ducks failed to convert, and ultimately ended up losing, 36-33, to the Washington Huskies in a game that will go down as one of the best of the entire 2023 college football season.

If even one of those conversions goes the other way — a “what if” that normally has a high success rate — then we’re likely having quite a different conversation at the moment.

Instead, the Ducks’ suffered their first loss of the season, and head coach Dan Lanning is facing more criticism for his aggressive play-calling.

On Monday night, I asked Lanning if the benefit of hindsight, and the ability to pour over the film since Saturday, had altered his opinion on the decisions made just days earlier.

“If I knew that none of them were going to work, you’d change every situation, right?” Lanning said. “That’s not the way those decisions work.

When you sit in this seat — I’m a big boy, I can handle criticism. And that’s going to come, and it’s deserved. In this position that’s the way it works. I trust our players, I trust our coaches, and when we have opportunities to win games, I’m going to be aggressive to win games.”

Where Oregon's offense ranks nationally in key stats following loss vs. Washington

The Oregon Ducks had an incredibly impressive day on the offensive side of the ball Saturday in a 36-33 loss to the Washington Huskies. It could have been more impressive, too.

The Ducks put up 541 total yards of offense and over 200 rushing yards with zero turnovers. They also were 0-for-3 on fourth down conversions, two of which came inside the Washington 10-yard line, and they missed a 43-yard field goal as time expired that could have sent the game into overtime.

It’s safe to say that some points were left on the board. Despite all of those missed opportunities, Oregon’s offense is still among the nation’s elite after Week 7 of the 2023 season.

Here’s where they rank statistically in some key areas...

Snap Count Takeaways: Major notes from Oregon's usage report vs. Washington

One of the most valuable things that I think we do each week at Ducks Wire is go through the usage report for the Oregon Ducks and break down the snap counts, looking at what the numbers tell us.

We can break down how much or how little each player played, and use that information to draw larger conclusions about the team going forward.

Normally, the usage reports are most valuable in blowout games when we get to see hoards of young players get onto the field, offering us a look at potential depth chart rotations and future production.

However, in games like we saw on Saturday where the Ducks went to the brink in a 36-33 loss to the Washington Huskies, we can also get a ton of value from the usage report, seeing which players the coaches feel comfortable relying on the most.

That’s what we got in Week 7 for Dan Lanning and the Ducks.

Here’s our look at the usage report, and some major takeaways from the numbers...

Where Oregon's defense ranks nationally in key statistics after Washington loss

There seems to be a misconception going around that the Oregon Ducks’ defense didn’t perform well this past weekend against the Washington Huskies in a 36-33 loss on the road.

It’s understandable why. Obviously, giving up 36 points isn’t great, especially when you allowed Washington to go 53 yards and 2 plays at the end of the game to score the go-ahead touchdown.

However, when you compare the numbers that the Huskies — an elite offensive team — put up on Saturday and the numbers that they’ve been averaging so far this year, it’s fair to say that the Ducks game them a difficult test.

Washington averaged 46 points per game this year; Oregon held them to 36. Washington averaged 446 passing yards per game this year; Oregon held them to 316. Washington averaged 569 total yards per game this year; Oregon held them to 415.

I could go on and on with numbers that show the Ducks’ defense actually stood up really well to an impossibly difficult task on Saturday, but very few people want to talk about that. When you lose the game, you’re not always afforded the luxury of hindsight and moral victories.

However, we want to highlight Oregon’s defense — a unit that strung together a trio of defensive stop, including a goal-line stand in the 4th quarter, to give the Ducks a chance to win this game.

While their national rankings may have dropped a little bit due to the level of competition they played, Oregon still has arguably the best defense in the Pac-12, and one of the top units in the nation.

Here’s where they rank nationally in some key statistics after Week 7...

Is Oregon a top-5 team? One popular CFB analyst thinks so after Week 7

This week, we are bringing a new analyst into the mix, because after Oregon’s loss to Washington.

His name is Josh Pate, and he is the host of Lake Kick with Josh Pate on CBS Sports. He’s a fast-rising analyst in the world of college football and is someone who has been incredibly high on the Ducks since before the season started.

He remains high on the Ducks, even following this loss to Washington. Pate’s justification is that these are power rankings, so the model he uses produces the hierarchy based on who should be favored over whom, given that the game takes place on a neutral field.

Take a look at where he has Oregon ranked, and in particular, where he has Oregon ranked in conjunction with Washington...

Kalen DeBoer explains why Washington scored so quick late against Oregon

Washington‘s 36-33 come-from-behind win over Oregon marked one of the most exciting and impressive performances of the college football season, bumping the Huskies up to a No. 5 ranking in the most recent AP Top 25 Poll.

The Huskies had their backs against the wall down by four points before their defense got a huge fourth-down stop that gave their offense the ball back with 2:11 left in the ballgame on their own 47-yard line.

Instead of attempting to score while methodically letting time run off the clock, Washington’s offense scored quickly in just two plays, a decision that head coach Kalen DeBoer discussed in a recent press conference...
