Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 3 Share Posted November 5, 2023 No. 6 Oregon vs. USC: Ducks open as 2 TD favorites over visiting Trojans There will be a lot of hype surrounding this game, despite the fact that it is being played between one team that is playing as well as it has all season, squarely in the College Football Playoff race, and another team that has lost three of their last four games and is no longer ranked. When the Oregon Ducks and USC Trojans get together, though, it’s often an entertaining time. This matchup hasn’t taken place since 2020, and with it being the first meeting between Bo Nix and Caleb Williams, plus Dan Lanning and Lincoln Riley, the storylines are going to take care of themselves. What about the football, though? That may be a different story. While the Ducks are rolling, the Trojans are currently reeling, coming off a tough 52-42 loss to the Washington Huskies this past weekend. With the game in Autzen, it’s no surprise that Oregon is favored. It will be interesting to see how high the number grows over the coming days. "I think there'll be a lot of similarities to some of the stuff that they already do," said Lanning. "I think that that group will probably have some new wrinkles that we potentially haven't seen. But it all comes back to what football is all about: tackling, blocking, breaking tackles, and making catches. So all those things are going to hold true. And we have to play to our identity. "Fortunately for us, we've played a lot of good quarterbacks this year. But Caleb is certainly a hard one to prepare for — one, because of his ability as an athlete. He can run. He's got great speed. He's really strong in the lower body, he's a hard guy to get to the ground," said Lanning on Monday night. "But again, the prep is every day. It's the drill work we do — you have to do some particular drills throughout the week to really prep you for the difference in play for him and how he plays. Like I said, holding the ball for long periods of time, and being able to keep his eyes downfield to create explosive plays, that's one of the things that probably makes him most unique. Then the fact that you really can't outrun his arm. It doesn't matter how far the receivers are down the field, he's always got the ability to throw it and does a great job of that. So he's a tough one to prepare for." For USC, former defensive coordinator Alex Grinch was seen as the bad air and was unceremoniously let go after the Trojans lost to Washington 52-42. Many Trojans fans argue that this move should have occurred after the Cotton Bowl debacle where Tulane lit the USC defense up for 46 points in the narrow one-point upset. Ultimately, the DC was retained for another year by head coach Lincoln Riley, with the hopes that things would improve. It didn’t get any better this season. Not even after giving up 41 to Colorado and Arizona each. Those turned out to be victories, but the signs were there. After losing three of four games, the evidence was too much for Riley not to do something. In with the good air, or replacements Shaun Nua and Brian Odom. It’s still a mystery how better the defense will be under these two coaches, but according to Oregon coach Dan Lanning, the Ducks will be prepared for any and everything... The answer is pride and continuing to build the strength of their program in Lincoln Riley's second year as coach. We know that the Ducks have a lot to play for as they are trying to win out to get a spot in the Pac-12 title game and a chance to get into the College Football Playoff. That doesn't mean USC is just going to roll over. Riley fired his defensive coordinator, Alex Grinch, this week, so USC is not waiting until the offseason to try and make improvements. Coaching changes can also invigorate a team. Look at the Raiders in the NFL last week, winning their first game in weeks after interim coach Antonio Pierce took over. Even if the talent is not quite where it needs to be, could the Trojan defense get a boost with a new defensive play caller and focus in their last two regular-season games? Not only that, with a win USC could still find a way into the Pac-12 title game, but it would come down to tiebreakers. One thing is for sure, if Oregon wins they will take another step toward the Pac-12 title game and some planned revenge against Washington... Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 20 Share Posted November 8, 2023 No. 6 Oregon remains two-score favorites over USC Oregon's Week 11 matchup is one of the biggest of the season as the USC Trojans head to Autzen Stadium for the first time since 2015. Led by former Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams, the Trojans come into this matchup unranked with a 7-3 record. The Trojans lost last week to No. 5 Washington, 52-42, at home. The Ducks took home a week 10 victory over Cal, 63-19, where Oregon's offense kept moving, scoring three touchdowns during the final five minutes of the first half. Bo Nix led the way with 386 passing yards, completing 76 percent of his passes and throwing for four touchdowns. Nix also added two touchdowns on the ground, both quarterback sneaks, as the Ducks put up 597 yards of total offense, a season-high against Power Five opponents. Tez Johnson led the way for Oregon's receivers, putting together a career day. Johnson recorded 12 receptions for 180 yards and two touchdowns, as both the reception and yardage total were career-highs. Johnson got off to a shaky start, dropping the first pass attempt of the game into an interception against Nix but returned strong and dominated the Cal secondary. The Ducks will end its season with a home matchup against USC before traveling to Arizona State next week and host No. 12 Oregon State in the final week of the regular season. Making it happen with two games left in the regular season, including a visit to No. 6 Oregon on Saturday (10:30 p.m. ET on FOX and the FOX Sports app), to salvage the Trojans' Pac-12 title hopes is another matter entirely. "That's the million-dollar question right now," Nua said Tuesday. Nua and Odom, who will be interim co-coordinators for the rest of the year after Alex Grinch was fired on Sunday, indicated all options are under consideration to make it happen for USC (7-3, 5-2 Pac-12). Overall, this game will be the 63rd matchup between these two schools. USC has won 38 of the games, Oregon has won 22, and there have been two ties. These are the two biggest teams on the West Coast, and it will be the first time that they’ve played each other since 2020. However, because of the recent struggles from the Trojans, there’s a bit of a lack in fanfare prior to kick-off. It may be the recent firing of USC defensive coordinator Alex Grinch that is taking the lead spot in a list of storylines or the fact that the Trojans are already out of the College Football Playoff race after being ranked No. 6 in the nation at the start of the season. Special teams performances are rarely celebrated. One of the three pillars of football, joined by offense and defense, the call for a punter or kicker is often met with disappointment. This clearly indicates that a drive stalled or a touchdown will not be scored. Sometimes, special teams will be the main takeaway from a win or loss, either good or bad. A blocked punt here, a return for a touchdown there. During the 2022 season for the Oregon Ducks, special teams were a common point of emphasis and not in a redeeming manner. It’s a physical game and players often get dinged up along the way. For the Oregon Ducks, though, things have been relatively smooth thus far, with an impressive group of trainers on the medical staff and a proven strength staff continually getting these players ready to play on Saturdays. Because of that, our injury reports have been largely sparse thus far in the season, knock on wood. That continues this week against the USC Trojans on Saturday night. For the Trojans, there are a few injuries here and there that could impact the team going forward, but nothing too serious. Will past performances on the road against Arizona State, or recent history against Oregon State plague this team? Will the final month provide enough stats for Bo Nix to continue his run toward the Heisman Trophy? Can the Ducks get the little bit of help they need elsewhere to have a guaranteed spot in the College Football Playoff should they win the remaining games on their schedule? These are all things that we won’t know the answers for another few weeks, at the minimum. In the midst of a colossal collapse, the Trojans remain in contention for a spot in the final Pac-12 Championship, while the Ducks have their eyes on a rematch with Washington and the College Football Playoff. Last Saturday, the Ducks overcame early turnover issues and penalty trouble to batter the California Golden Bears 63-19, while USC came out short at home against Pac-12 leader Washington in a 52-42 loss that left the Trojans scrambling ahead of their visit to Autzen Stadium. College football is fickle. Despite just two conference losses, preseason Heisman favorite Caleb Williams and the Trojans are painted as a team in crisis. After Oregon's big guys exerted their will on Utah's for four quarters in Salt Lake City, head coach Dan Lanning told the press what most who'd watched the game knew to be true. Considered the "really big question mark" of the offseason, his team's offense line wasn't one now. "I don't know if that's a question mark anymore," Lanning said following the 35-6 bashing of the Utes on Oct. 28. USC football has lost three of its last four and barely survived other close tests, including their triple-overtime thriller against Arizona and 50-49 barn-burner at Cal. USC’s most recent loss came at the hands of Michael Penix Jr. and the Washington Huskies, the same squad that handed Oregon its only loss of the year. After the Trojans’ loss, head coach Lincoln Riley announced the Trojans would part ways with defensive coordinator Alex Grinch. Before the season began, this was the game I expected to be the best Pac-12 game of the year. USC (7-3, 5-2) has lost three of its last four; the Ducks and Trojans each have wins over Stanford, Colorado and California, each has lost to Washington and Oregon beat Utah while USC lost to the Utes. USC leads the all-time series with Oregon, 38-22-2, including 11-9-1 in Eugene. The Ducks have won four of the last five in the matchup, including three of the last four at Autzen Stadium.
