Rewinding No. 6 Oregon Ducks’ 36-27 win vs. USC Trojans: Live updates recap

Bo Nix threw for 402 yards and four touchdowns and the sixth-ranked Oregon Ducks withstood a late rally to beat the USC Trojans 36-27 on Saturday night at Autzen Stadium.

The Ducks led 36-14 after Bucky Irving’s 19-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter.

But Caleb Williams and the Trojans (7-4, 5-3 Pac-12) rallied with two touchdown drives in the final quarter. Oregon recovered USC’s onside kick attempt, though, and the Ducks (9-1, 6-1) drained the clock from there...

Social media reacts to Bo Nix's big night as Oregon Ducks roll over USC Trojans

The game was never really in doubt, but the score looked a bit closer than Oregon Duck fans wanted it to for quite a while.

Though they were undoubtedly the more complete team from start to finish, a few missed opportunities in the first half allowed the USC Trojans to hang around before Bo Nix and the Ducks put them away in the second half, going on to win 36-27 at home in front of the fifth-largest crowd in Autzen Stadium history.

The start of the game was electric, with Nix completing his first two passes for touchdowns of 73 and 86 yards, respectively, and the Ducks were off to the races from there.

While USC quarterback Caleb Williams was dynamic and impressive as always, he was no match for the Oregon defense in the end.

The result was a resounding Ducks’ victory that left fans joyously going into the night.

Here are some of the best reactions from the evening on social media...

Bo Nix throws for four scores, Ducks dump Trojans at Autzen

Sixth-ranked Oregon welcomed USC to late night at Autzen Stadium with a pair of first quarter fireworks.

Two of Oregon's five plays went for long passing scores to Tez Johnson and Troy Franklin to allow the Ducks to build a quick lead and keep their raucous supporters rocking. Johnson's score went for 77 yards and Franklin's for 84.

The hot start gave the Ducks a lead they would never relent. Two more Nix passing scores helped the Ducks to a 36-27 win over USC and also aided his Heisman Trophy case...

The main takeaways from Oregon's win over USC

The Oregon Ducks didn't play a fully clean football game against visiting USC, but it still delivered a dominant performance to secure their ninth win of the season.

The Ducks beat USC 36-27 in front of the fifth-largest crowd ever at Autzen Stadium, and Oregon senior QB Bo Nix continued to shine bright as the assumed favorite to win the Heisman.

Bo Nix threw for over 400 yards through the air, four touchdowns, and he didn't turn the football over. The Oregon offense rolled up over 500 yards of offense, and they dominated up front against a USC offensive line that couldn't protect its quarterback in Caleb Williams.

Here are the main takeaways from Oregon's victory over the USC Trojans and what it means for the Ducks going forward as they try and get to the Pac-12 Championship Game for the second time in three seasons...

Joe Freeman: ‘A win is a win,’ but Oregon Ducks could use a few style points to dazzle College Football Playoff committee

Alabama is coming. You can see it.

Texas is lurking. You can feel it.

The Michigan-Ohio State loser is a potential problem. You just know it.

So as the sixth-ranked Oregon Ducks waddle toward what feels like the inevitable — a rematch with the fifth-ranked Washington Huskies in the Pac-12 championship game — it’s not enough for them to simply win.

No, not for a one-loss team jockeying with one-loss traditional powers for a coveted spot in the College Football Playoff.

Style points matter this time of year.

And Saturday’s 36-27 win over the wounded and reeling USC Trojans didn’t have enough style points for my liking...

You’d like to believe that Oregon’s resume at the end of the year will be enough, but you can’t leave these things to chance.

Bo Nix delivers 'Heisman-worthy performance' in win over USC

Dan Lanning did not hesitate.

Moments after Oregon outlasted USC thanks to a 412-yard, four-touchdown performance from quarterback Bo Nix, the second-year head coach leaned into the burgeoning narrative with full force.

"A Heisman-worthy performance from Bo," Lanning said. "We got a special one on our sidelines."

Nix's numbers told one side of the story -- he completed 74% of his throws, averaged 13.3 yards per pass attempt and posted a 96.1 QBR. But the way he paced Oregon's offense -- from drives punctuated by explosive plays to methodical ones -- displayed how dynamic the Ducks' attack can be on their way to their ninth win.

Big-Play Ducks Win Ranked Matchup

The Oregon football team wasn't perfect Saturday. Thanks to the big-play ability of Bo Nix and his playmakers, plus an opportunistic defense, the Ducks didn't have to be.

Despite committing 13 penalties and allowing USC to score the last 13 points of the game, the No. 6 Oregon football team came away with a 36-27 victory over the No. 20 Trojans before the fifth-largest crowd in Autzen Stadium history, 59,957.

Nix's first two passes of the game went for 77 and 84 yards, as Troy Franklin and Tez Johnson combined for 273 receiving yards on the night. Bucky Irving ran for 118 yards and a score, and the UO defense sacked reigning Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams three times while also recovering a fumble...

Instant Reactions to Oregon's 36-27 win over USC

The Oregon Ducks won their ninth game of the season under the Saturday night, Autzen Stadium lights against the USC Trojans. The Ducks led for almost the entire game, but the Trojans did make a late push.

With around five minutes left in the fourth quarter, Austin Jones scored a rushing TD, making the score 36-27. Lincoln Riley opted to go for the 2-point conversion, even though the PAT would’ve made it a one-score game.

The Trojans didn’t convert, and the Ducks iced the game with a few first downs shortly after.

The thing that stood out most to me was how strong Oregon’s passing attack was. Bo Nix has led one of the nation’s best passing offenses all year, but his performance in this game was particularly special.

The Oregon receiving corps was able to make plays in open space throughout the game.

Below are the rest of my instant reactions to Oregon’s win over USC...

Troy Franklin Becomes Oregon's First 1,000-Yard Wide Receiver Since 2018

Junior wide receiver Troy Franklin etched his name into the Oregon history books on Saturday night. He became the 12th wide receiver in program history to eclipse 1,000 receiving yards in a single season and the first to do it since Dillon Mitchell in 2018.

It was a light workload for Franklin against the USC Trojans, but he made the most of it, turning two catches into 147 receiving yards and a touchdown to help the spark the Ducks in a 36-27 win.

The 6-foot-3, 187-pound wideout now has 1,093 receiving yards on the year and says the achievement shows he's making progress on a goal he brought with him to Eugene back in 2021.

"It means a lot," Franklin said of hitting the 1,000-yard mark after the game. "When I first got out of high school I came to kind of change the receiver perception up here, so I think I'm kind of doing that."

Franklin's achievement on Saturday looks like an indication of more good things to come, as he's now up to six 100-yard receiving games in 2023, tying an Oregon single-season record.

Bo Nix's top target is now just 92 yards away from breaking the single-season record for most receiving yards (1,184), set by Mitchell in 2018.

Franklin has at least one touchdown catch in 12 of his last 14 games, and his 139 career receptions are tied with Johnny Johnson III for 10th in program history.

Ducks Wire Player of the Game: Troy Franklin inches closer to the Ducks' single-season receiving record

The Oregon Ducks’ passing attack was at the top of its game in Oregon’s 36-27 win over the USC Trojans. Bo Nix connected with six different receivers and threw for over 300 yards for the second week in a row, this time racking up 412 yards through the air.

Oregon’s leading receiver was Troy Franklin, who finished with 147 yards on 2 catches, and a TD, which makes him the Ducks Wire player of the game...

9 major takeaways from Oregon's decisive 36-27 win over USC Trojans

You can tell who stayed up late to watch this game based on the way that people talk about the result.

The scoreboard says one thing, while the eye test says something completely different. 36-27 was the final score, a nine-point win for the Oregon Ducks over the USC Trojans.

However, it was not a game that ever seemed to be as close as the final number would suggest.

After a touchdown on the very first play of the fourth quarter, the Ducks held a 22-point lead over the Trojans, and if not for a touchdown late in the game, the narrative surrounding this contest would feel quite a bit different.

It was yet another legendary performance for Bo Nix, a standout game for Oregon’s defensive line, and a somewhat frustrating outcome for fans when you consider how many opportunities were left on the table to make this a truly lopsided affair.

In the end, a win is a win, though, and the Ducks got that without much stress.

Here are our biggest takeaways from the game...

Stock Report: Brandon Dorlus dominates, while penalty issues pile up for Ducks

The Oregon Ducks had a much more dominant game than the final score would suggest.

Though they won by just 9 points against the USC Trojans, 36-27, Oregon outgained USC 552-379 in total yards, with almost double the yards on the ground (140-73) and a significant margin through the air (412-306).

On top of that, the Ducks won the turnover battle, and forced four USC punts, while being forced to punt the ball just once on their own side of things.

The stats help to show what those who didn’t stay up late to watch the game couldn’t see — a victory that was never in doubt for the Ducks.

While there are a lot of things that need to be cleaned up for Oregon going forward, especially when it comes to penalties, Duck fans should feel pretty good about their team’s ability to get a stress-free win, even when not playing their best.

As we do every week, let’s look at the players who saw their stock rise the most in the game, as well as a few players or areas that might need some attention going forward.

Here is our weekly stock report for the Ducks...

ESPN FPI Update: Oregon's CFP odds go up after big win over USC

We’re getting down to it in the 2023 college football season, with just two regular-season games left on the schedule for the Oregon Ducks, and a potential Pac-12 Championship Game should they win both of those games.

That means fewer and fewer predictions about the upcoming games.

Next week against the Arizona State Sun Devils, the Ducks are heavy favorites early on. After that, they’ve got a highly-intense game against the Oregon State Beavers at home, potentially standing between them and a rematch with the Washington Huskies.

How likely is that to happen? Not very, if you ask the ESPN Football Power Index.

As we do each and every week, let’s take a look at the FPI numbers, seeing win probability for the remaining two games on the schedule, and the likelihood that Oregon can stay alive throughout the month of December and into January as well...

Oregon’s unique offense looks unstoppable as Oregon defeats USC 36-27

If fans haven’t noticed yet, this Oregon Ducks (9-1, 6-1 Pac-12) team that defeated USC (7-4, 5-3 Pac-12) 36-27 Saturday night is unique to most other teams in the country.

Most teams don’t have Bo Nix – the most experienced quarterback in college football history – under center.

In Saturday’s game, which was marketed as a battle of the quarterbacks, Nix outmatched last season’s Heisman winner, Caleb Williams, in every category finishing with four passing touchdowns.

Wide receivers Tez Johnson and Troy Franklin both added over 100-yard receiving efforts in the win.

Most teams don’t have game-breaking wide receivers like Johnson and Franklin either.

“We got dynamic guys in that room,” Johnson said. “We all saw Troy Franklin take a dig to the house. We were basically competing.”

Most defenses aren’t as talented as the Ducks’. That much was on display early.

Oregon immediately stuffed the Trojans, who coming into Saturday’s game had scored on eight of their first 10 opening drives...

Column: Even Dan Lanning can't deny the Heisman buzz, but it doesn't change a thing for Ducks

On Saturday night after the No. 6 Oregon Ducks’ 36-27 win over the USC Trojans, Dan Lanning sat down for his post-game press conference and said something that he hadn’t said before this season.

It made my ears perk up in the moment. In the days since, I’ve combed through his hours of interviews since the start of training camp and confirmed what I thought to be true the instant he uttered that word as the clock struck midnight on Saturday...

Snap Count Takeaways: Major notes from Oregon's usage report vs. USC

At this point in the college football season, with just two regular season games left  on the schedule before the postseason potentially arrives, it’s not common that we look at usage reports from games and find many things that we didn’t already know.

With 10 games down, we have a good idea of what the rotation looks like on both offense and defense, and who the guys are that get called upon in the biggest moments of the game.

When you’re playing important football in November, you need to have those guys that you know you can rely on.

For the Oregon Ducks, that’s certainly the case, and the usage report reflects that this week after a win over the USC Trojans on Saturday.

Let’s take a dive into the snap counts and see what we can take away from them...

Where Oregon's offense ranks nationally in key stats following win over USC

Earlier this week, Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham told media members that he was of the opinion that the Oregon Ducks’ offense in 2023 is the best that it’s been since the Chip Kelly years last decade.

Coming from the person who was responsible for the best Oregon offense that the Ducks had seen since those year before this season, that’s some pretty high praise.

The Ducks once again showed what they were capable of on the offensive side of the ball this past week against the USC Trojans, with QB Bo Nix having another massive performance, throwing for over 400 yards with 4 touchdowns.

Unsurprisingly, the Ducks still rank as one of the best offenses in the nation going into Week 12.

Ranking Oregon's top 10 players vs. USC according to PFF grades

The Oregon Ducks left Saturday’s win over the USC Trojans feeling like they could have played a much cleaner game than they did, and the penalty yardage certainly supported that idea.

While they found a way to win comfortably, the scoreboard wasn’t quite indicative of how lopsided the game really was.

The grades from Pro Football Focus reflect that as well, giving certain Ducks high scores, but overall not one of the best performances from the team this year.

As we like to do each week after the game, let’s dive into the PFF grades to see which players had the best underlying metrics, giving us a deeper look than just what the box score shows...

Where Oregon's defense ranks nationally in key statistics after win over USC

When going up against a reigning Heisman Trophy winner and one of the best offenses in the nation, it’s not always easy to put up numbers to go along with your season-long averages.

That’s what the Oregon Ducks were able to do, though, giving up just 27 points to the USC Trojans in a decisive win, while slowing down Caleb Williams and completely shutting down the opposing rushing offense.

After the performance, the Ducks still stand as one of the top defenses in the nation, holding strong in the national rankings going into the final two weeks of the regular season.

Here’s a look at where they rank nationally in some key statistics going into mid-November...
