Spring Position Preview: Brings New Look, High Ceiling into 2024 Season

After a couple of long off-season months, the grass is starting to grow and trees are getting ready to bloom. Spring is coming in Eugene, and with it comes the long-awaited return of football for the Oregon Ducks.

A lot will look different in this new year for Dan Lanning and his team, with several of last year’s top players moving onto the NFL, including guys like Bo Nix, Troy Franklin, Bucky Irving, Jackson Powers-Johnson, and Brandon Dorlus. All of that is not to mention the fact that the Ducks are joining the Big Ten, and have a new-look conference to get used to on top of a spot in the expanded College Football Playoff to strive for.

It’s safe to say that there are a lot of things to talk about going into this spring season, and a lot of storylines to discuss. To get things started, we want to give a position-by-position breakdown of Oregon’s current roster, getting readers up to date on which players left, which players are returning, and what the overall outlook is going into the spring. We will start with the quarterbacks.

Projecting the Ducks' defensive depth chart ahead of Oregon's spring season

The Oregon Ducks are less than a week away from getting their spring season off and running, with the first practice of the year taking place on Thursday, March 14.

There is a bit more anticipation for this spring season than we’ve seen in a few years, largely because of the sheer number of new players on the roster, both coming to Eugene via the transfer portal and as incoming high school recruits.

While a lot of the attention early on is going to be focused on Jabbar Muhammad and Ja’Maree Caldwell, among others, it will be important to watch as the roster takes shape across the entire defense with the Ducks preparing for their first season in the Big Ten Conference, vying for a spot in the newly expanded College Football Playoff.

Over the last week, we’ve started our position breakdowns for the Oregon roster on the offensive side, and we will continue to break down the defense this coming week. We want to kick that off with a projection of what the 2-deep depth chart will look like for the Ducks this spring. We will revisit this after Oregon wraps up the spring season with the Spring Game at the end of April.

Ranking the most intriguing position battles for the Oregon Ducks this spring

With spring football just days away for Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks, we’ve been breaking down the entire roster over the past week, from position previews to depth chart projections for both the offenseand defense.

Now we want to look at some of the potential position battles that will take place over the next several weeks as players jockey for position on the depth chart. You may hear “position battles” and think that we’re only talking about guys who are vying for spots on the starting lineup, but there are a number of really intriguing competitions for spots on the second team, or even the third-string in Eugene as well.

Whether it’s redshirt freshman going up against upper-classmen, or an incoming true freshman working to establish an early spot in the rotation, the next several weeks of football will be fascinating to watch as we get an early idea of who stands where on the depth chart.

Here’s our ranking of the most intriguing position competitions to watch in Eugene this spring:

Without a consistant pass rush any secondary will struggle to stop the forward pass. I believe our secondary last couple years wasn’t the problem but got blamed a lot.

That being said I to believe that overall QB talent in the B1G isn’t as competant as that of the pack. We surely are about to find out if our D can keep pace. Our offense surely will.
