Oregon Guts Out 18-16 Win Over No. 20 Iowa in Kinnick

Dante-Moore-18.jpg

Moore and Oregon offense got the ball back with just under two minutes to go and three timeouts. Moore dropped a perfect pass in the bread basket for Benson, who hauled it in for 24 yards to help set up a 39-yard game-winning field goal from Sappington, who finished three-for-three on the day.

Oregon escaped Kinnick Stadium with a 18-16 win to move to 8-1.

Oregon boosts College Football Playoff case with last-second defeat of Iowa

It was far from the flashy, dominant win we’ve grown accustomed to seeing Oregon pull off. But even though the Ducks didn’t pummel the Hawkeyes to death, it’s just as impressive of a win.

Oregon was without leading receiver Dakorien Moore and tight end Kenyon Sadiq was hobbled. Gary Bryant Jr., another important receiver, left early in the contest. The pressure was on for Dante Moore and company to execute against one of the best passing defenses in the country.

Instead, the Ducks flexed their muscles and reminded the committee its defense is up there with one of the best.

“I guess that’s what they call Big Ten football,” Lanning said. “What an unbelievable game.”

Atticus Sappington wins Ducks Wire Player of the Game vs. Iowa Hawkeyes

The Oregon Ducks came into Saturday’s game against the Iowa Hawkeyes facing a major uphill battle. They were on the road, decimated by injuries to their offense and playing through some tough weather conditions.

Head coach Dan Lanning was hoping that this game could be a springboard to getting his team back to their dominant ways, but it didn’t quite work out that way. The contest turned out to be a low-scoring, defensive slugfest, where both offenses struggled and felt like they could win or lose the game on any given play.

It’s normally tough to choose a standout player in such an off game, but that wasn’t the case today. In a rare turn of events, kicker Atticus Sappington will take home the Ducks Wire Player of the Game after connecting on a game-winning 39-yard field goal with just three seconds left in the game.

7 major takeaways from Oregon Ducks' gutsy 18-16 win over Iowa Hawkeyes

In hindsight, nobody could have blamed the Oregon Ducks for losing this game. It would have been frustrating, for sure, as they were the more talented team with the higher expectations, but with everything stacked against them, it was a losable game, to say the least.

Oregon's Dan Lanning Admits He Was ‘Pretty Nervous’ Watching Game-Winning Kick

Thanks to some special teams heroics, No. 9 Oregon slid past No. 20 Iowa, 18-16, on Saturday — a finish that left Ducks head coach Dan Lanning anything but calm.

Lanning admitted as much after watching kicker Atticus Sappington drill a 39-yard field goal in the rain with seven seconds left to seal the win. Truth be told, the redshirt senior’s composure in the clutch may have exceeded that of his head coach.

"If you want the truth, I was pretty nervous," Lanning told reporters. "I'm nervous for him because it shouldn't come down to that moment for Atticus. That guy's going to feel an unbelievable amount of pressure, however that goes. But, I'm really proud that he's able to handle a moment like that."
