Cal Football: Bears Wrestle With How to Get the Best from Freshman Jaydn Ott

His production, based on lots of factors, is much different in wins and losses.

The Bears will need to score points on Saturday at Memorial Stadium to keep pace with No. 8 Oregon,

whose 42.4 points per game have helped lift the Ducks to the top of the Pac-12 standings.

In the Bears’ three victories, they have averaged 34.3 points. In the four defeats, that number shrinks to 15.0 points.

There is a long list of variables that have determined when the Cal football team wins or loses this season.

The Bears’ ability to help freshman running back Jaydn Ott find room to operate is near the top of that list.

Cal's offense prone to air it out with a heavy dose of Jaydn Ott

With the California Golden Bears, it’s true freshman Jaydn Ott that has been the engine that runs the offense in Berkeley.

There aren’t many running backs in the country that can rush for 274 yards as Ott did in the game against Arizona.

At quarterback, Jack Plummer left Purdue in search of more consistent playing time and he’s found that in the Bay Area.

Plummer is completing 61 percent of his passes while averaging 251 yards, thrown for 12 touchdowns, and just three interceptions.

Can Oregon Ducks continue progressing on third down defense against Cal?

“You have to take the whole sample size,” Oregon coach Dan Lanning said. “There’s some third downs where we got a third down stop, but then they

converted on fourth. So what does that equate to? That’s still a loss. I think there are some much-improved situations and then some situations to get better.

The No. 8 Ducks allowed conversions on 6 of 12 attempts against the Bruins, ordinarily not a good performance, but UCLA was 4 for 4 on third-and-four-or-less, with two attempts passing and two...

Oregon offensive onslaught prepares for ‘very sound’ California defense

One of these playmakers is junior cornerback Collin Gamble, whose six tackles-for-loss rank first on the Golden Bears’ roster. With 31 total tackles and two

passes defended, Gamble has been one of the most outstanding defensive backs in the Pac-12 in recent weeks — each of his six TFLS have come in the last three games.

Also doing a good job in 2022 has been senior middle linebacker Jackson Sirmon, whose 63 total tackles rank third in the Pac-12.

Furthermore, Sirmon has tallied four tackles for loss and an interception, making him a player to watch on Saturday.

Oregon Brings Balance to Berkeley

Oregon is a very, very good football team --- offensively. They come to Strawberry Canyon riding a six-game win streak.

They haven’t won seven straight since 2019, nor have they been 5-0 in conference play since 2019.

But take a closer look at some of the numbers, and there is a glimmer of hope for the Golden Bears...
