Oregon faces an improved and defensive-focused Sun Devil squad

The Oregon Ducks (9-7) took a big step last Saturday with a road win over Utah. Now they can take another as they host Arizona State (13-3). Beat the Sun Devils, and the Ducks will claim another resume-building win and put the Ducks into a tie for fourth place in the Pac-12 standings.

The Sun Devils come to town riding a two-game winning streak while also winning 11 of their last 13 games. Their only losses in that span were by 37 at San Francisco and by nine at home to Arizona. Its the best start for the Sun Devils through 16 games since the 2017-18 season, and their 4-1 start in league play is their best start since the 2007-08 season.

Yep, this team is going nowhere.  Altman has a lot to change by next year.

That was really hard to watch tonight. The Ducks were outplayed in every facet of the game. I just don't feel good about them turning it around in time to make a run.

For second time in eight days Oregon gets embarrassed with bad loss

It happened again. The Oregon Duck men's basketball team got its doors blown off in a game that could have gone a long way in boosting its resume for the NCAA Tournament. Instead, the Ducks squandered yet another chance and look more and more like a team bound for the NIT at best.

Oregon falls to 9-8 on the year and 3-3 in Pac-12 play. They are now down multiple games to the teams in the top four of the Pac-12 standings, making their chances at getting a first-round by in the Pac-12 Tournament very difficult.

Oregon men’s basketball embarrassed by Arizona State, Ducks’ largest margin of defeat at home in 8 years

The healthiest Oregon roster of the season suffered one of the the largest margins of defeat at Matthew Knight Arena

in Altman’s 13 seasons at UO, getting embarrassed 90-73 before a lethargic crowd of 5,955.

Aside from three straight three-pointers by Richardson in the first half and an 11-0 UO run in the second when ASU’s

starters were all on the bench, the home crowd had nothing to cheer for.

Growing pains in January; Oregon's full roster struggles in first test against Arizona State

At points during Thursday’s contest, Oregon played like a team fresh into the season, playing a non-conference game at home in November. A team that’s rusty at the start of the season, continuing to work through some initial quirks while playing lesser competition.

It’s not the fault of Oregon or the coaching staff that injuries took over this team's storyline during the first two months of the season. Getting these guys back into the team's flow this late in the season is a big ask, especially in the middle of conference play and against an Arizona State team that moved to 14-3 on the season.

After Oregon's 2nd embarrassing bad loss in eight days, Dana Altman vows changes are coming

Dana Altman has seen enough. After the program's fourth loss at home this season and the second time in eight days they've been embarrassed on national TV, changes are coming to the Oregon men's basketball program. The Ducks sit 9-8 overall and 3-3 in Pac-12 play. Their season is starting to slip away from them for the second year in a row. Change is needed.

"We are going to shake some things up, give some opportunities, cut the minutes of some guys that we've been giving a lot of opportunities to," he said. "And I don't know if that is going to work. If I thought they were better going into the game, I would have played them. But you can't keep doing the same thing, so we are going to change things up."

Ducks Look Flat In Loss To Devils

Oregon fell behind early and never really got going in a 90-73 loss to ASU on Thursday.

Oregon allowed ASU to shoot 52.4 percent overall and make 13 three-pointers, while the

Ducks shot 42.4 percent themselves and were outrebounded 37-29.

"We got beat in every facet of the game," UO coach Dana Altman said. "So, really disappointed obviously.

I know our fans are; they should be. That's not what you expect from our ball team, and our program. Very concerning."

That was hard to watch . . . just bad basketball all around.  Poor overall effort, terrible individual and team defense for much of the game.  The team seems mostly disconnected and lacking any kind of meaningful team strategy.  It's gotta be driving Altman and the coaching staff crazy.

Many Altman teams of the recent past could rely on solid defense when the shots weren't falling . . . this team looks lost out there on the defensive end, and much of it appears to be lack of effort (they got pounded on the boards) and not being connected.   You're not going to win too many games with that kind of effort and a porous defense.
