WBB Pac-12 Tournament: 3/1/23, Ducks vs Washington, (Ducks WIN 52-50)

Recommended Posts

The bracket is set for the 2023 Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Tournament, as the 22nd annual event is slated to tip off this Wednesday, March 1 at Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas.

Both 15-3, Stanford and Utah shared the league's regular-season title, the Cardinal's third consecutive and 26th overall and the first for the Utes.

Washington and Oregon both finished 7-11 and in a tie for eighth, with the Huskies holding the tiebreaker and No. 8 seed. The two split their regular-season contests, but the Huskies went 1-2 against the two squads tied atop the league standings, while the Ducks were 0-2. UW has more than tripled its Conference win total from a season ago (2) and has its best seed since it was No. 3 in 2017.

Te-Hina Paopao regaining her joy, as team preps for Pac-12 Tournament

Oh, what difference a little confidence can make.

The junior's return to form wasn't a one-off. She followed that showing in Seattle with two more 20-point offerings in this weekend's wins over Arizona and Arizona State. Her heroics, and the team's success of the weekend, keeps their NCAA Tournament hopes hanging by a thread.

Over the last three games, Paopao has averaged 22.0 points per game with add made threes on 66.7 percent accuracy.

"It's called character. She's got great character," Graves said of Paopao on Saturday afternoon. "She believes in herself. Her teammates believe in her and we believe in her. It was just a matter of time. I'm glad that it's right now because it's made us a more dynamic team when we know we can count on her.

Grace VanSlooten unlikely to play on Wednesday, Chance Gray a 'question mark'

The Ducks may be without two starters when they open Pac-12 Tournament play in Las Vegas on Wednesday.

Oregon coach Kelly Graves continues to be skeptical of the availability of forward Grace VanSlooten, who has missed three straight games with an ankle injury, and he's also uncertain if Chance Gray will be available either.

Per Graves, VanSlooten saw an uptick in practice activity on Monday, while Gray, who is dealing with a lower left leg injury of her own, was unable to participate. Te-Hina Paopao was also "limited", Graves said.

Oregon women remain on cusp of NCAA Tournament in latest ESPN projection

ESPN's latest bracket projections have the Ducks just outside the field of 68. Per Tuesday's update, the Ducks are the first team on the outside looking in for next month's NCAA Tournament.

The Ducks will face Washington on Wednesday to open the Pac-12 Tournament. The winner of that game will have a good chance of dancing, as the Huskies are fifth team out, per ESPN. The remaining team will face Stanford on Thursday in Las Vegas.

The Pac-12 remains well-represented in the tournament even with a few teams battling for bids. Stanford and Utah are both on the top-seed line, while Colorado would also host as a four-seed. UCLA (5), Arizona (6), Washington State (10) and USC (10) are also safely in to give the league seven representatives.

Oregon has not missed the NCAA Tournament since the 2015-16 season when they reached the WNIT semifinals.

DUCKS OPEN PAC-12 TOURNAMENT VS. WASHINGTON

The Oregon women's basketball team begins its quest for a Pac-12 title Wednesday, as the Ducks open the Pac-12 Tournament against Washington at 2:30 p.m. PT at Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas.

The ninth-seeded Ducks and eighth-seeded Huskies meet for the third time this season after each winning on their home floors during the regular season. The winner will advance to take on No. 1 seed Stanford Thursday at 2:30 p.m. PT.

Oregon has won 11 of its last 13 meetings with UW, with the Huskies taking a 68-60 decision in the last meeting on Feb. 19 in Seattle. UO owns a 55-52 lead in the series history while the teams have split six all-time meetings in the Pac-12 Tournament.

Ducks open Pac-12 Tournament with must-win against Washington

Two strong defensive efforts paved the way for wins over Arizona and Arizona State, which combined to make less than 30 percent of their shots, and Oregon's offense seemed to flow better than in recent weeks with a reshuffled lineup.

The demeanor of the team has changed, Graves says. An extra pep can be seen in players' steps, as the weight of the seven-game losing streak has dissipated, and the Ducks' path to the NCAA Tournament has become clearer.

Based upon the latest ESPN projections, the Ducks remain the first team outside the field of 68, and Washington, whom the Ducks play on Wednesday to open the Pac-12 Tournament, is in a similar position. A win over the Huskies might only act as the team's 17th of the season, but based upon their computer profile (they have the nation's 18th best NET ranking), that might be enough to punch a ticket.

DUCKS BRING MOMENTUM TO VEGAS

If you're a potential opponent of the Oregon women's basketball team at this week's Pac-12 Tournament, good luck trying to anticipate just what you'll see from the Ducks.

Throughout the 2022-23 season, the Ducks rarely have presented the same challenge for very long. They've seen the roster fluctuate, from two early season departures of potential mainstays to injuries taking their toll in recent weeks. They've had individuals enjoy hot streaks, and endure slumps.

Some of those questions linger as the UO women (16-13) prepare to face Washington (15-13) in a first-round tournament game at Michelob ULTRA Arena in Mandalay Bay on Wednesday (2:30 p.m., Pac-12). But after wrapping up the regular season with a sweep of the Arizona schools at home last week, the Ducks took some positive momentum with them to Las Vegas on Tuesday.

Consistency has been hard to come by this season for Oregon, but the Ducks were in a good place entering the Pac-12 Tournament.

WBB recap: Endyia Rogers' 28 points keeps Oregon's NCAA hopes alive

It was just how Washington wanted it, except for the final score.

In a slow-paced contest, the Huskies held Oregon’s offense down, but they never accounted for Endyia Rogers. The Ducks’ guard scored 28 points and brought down a career-high 11 rebounds to defeat Washington 52-50 in the first round of the Pac-12 tournament.

The win also possibly punched the Ducks’ ticket into the NCAA tournament.
