2022 Redshirt Freshmen in Review Series

Recommended Posts

Dan Lanning's debut recruiting class factored in to some of Oregon's on field success in 2022. But while a handful of players carved out roles, the majority of the 17-player 2022 signing class did not.

Of the 17 freshmen who enrolled last year, four appeared in enough games to avoid redshirt, led by offensive tackle Josh Conerly Jr, who saw action in all 13 games. Oregon fans have become somewhat familiar with that foursome. The 13 redshirts who remain on the roster? Not so much. In this series, we'll do our best to bring you up to speed with them.

Today, we begin the series with linebacker Devon Jackson.

Redshirt Review: Ben Roberts

Today, we'll continue the series with defensive tackle Ben Roberts.

Roberts certainly takes up space at 311 pounds and has requisite athleticism to make that matter. Roberts has a strong lower body with quick feet and plays with tenacity. As a prep in Utah he proved capable of being a difference-maker on both run and pass downs. The staff seemed to like what Roberts showed in practice a season ago, as he traveled to every road game and appeared in four games before sitting out to to maintain his redshirt status.

Redshirt Review: Emar'rion Winston

Today, we'll continue the series with EDGE Emar'rion Winston.

Recruiting Ranking — 488th overall in 2022 247Sports Composite / 40th best EDGE prospect

Games played in 2022 — Three.

What he brings to the table — The younger brother of former Oregon linebacker La'Mar Winston, Emar'rion was one of three in-state signees in 2022. At 6-foot-4 and 245 pounds, he's bigger than his brother and a good fit for the modern EDGE role. He possesses plus athletic tools and is developing as a pass rusher after playing a variety of positions in high school. Winston was a reliable tackler at Central Catholic.

Redshirt Review: Justius Lowe

What he brings to the table — He has some pop to his game. A track athlete first, Lowe has speed to run away from people and the ability to make players in space miss too. He's also shown the ability to make the difficult catch.

What he might be lacking — Listed at just 182 pounds as a frosh, Lowe does not resemble a fully-developed collegiate wide receiver. Time spent retooling his body will be necessary to get him prepared to play at this level. A relatively raw prospect with only a few years of playing experience, Lowe will need more time than others shore up his technique as both a route runner and receiver, as well as a blocker.

Redshirt Review: Michael Wooten

Today, we'll continue the series with offensive tackle Michael Wooten.

Recruiting Ranking — 600th overall in 2022 247Sports Composite / 49th best offensive tackle prospect

Games played in 2022 — One.

What he brings to the table — A well-proportioned young offensive lineman, Wooten has the requisite size, length and athleticism to one day become a starting offensive tackle. Wooten is listed two inches shorter on Oregon's roster than he was as a recruit (from 6-foot-6 to 6-foot-4), but possesses enough size regardless. Wooten was a relentless as a prep, showing the type of mean streak required for the position.

Redshirt Review: Anthony Jones

Recruiting Ranking — 622nd overall in 2022 247Sports Composite / 40th best athlete prospect

Games played in 2022 — Two

What he brings to the table — One of last year's only prep early enrollees, Jones has the leg up on others in his class having already completed a spring at this level. Jones has the requisite size (6-foot-3 and 245 pound) and athleticism (ran a 4.74 40 as a prep) to play outside linebacker. Jones and fellow true frosh Emar'rion Winston jockeyed for position as the team's final EDGE/outside linebacker on the travel roster a year ago.

Redshirt Review: Kawika Rogers

Today, we'll continue the series with offensive lineman Kawika Rogers.

Recruiting Ranking — 820th overall in 2022 247Sports Composite / 68th best offensive tackle prospect

Games played in 2022 — Two.

What he brings to the table — Standing 6-foot-5, Rogers has a great frame for the position and carries his listed weight (334 pounds) well. Despite playing tackle in high school and being projected by recruiting services there, he worked primarily at guard last season. Of his 15 snaps in 2022, 12 came at left guard. Rogers has the versatility to play right tackle as well — the position he played for the other three snaps.

Redshirt Review: Sir Mells

Recruiting Ranking — Unranked in 2022 247Sports Composite / 135th best defensive line prospect

Games played in 2022 — Zero.

What he brings to the table — No one is doubting the size of this young man. At 6-foot-3 and 315 pounds, he has plenty of heft to play on the defensive line or as rumored on the offensive line. A photo taken from workouts earlier this month shows Mells in a white offensive uniform, which may indicate a position change. Regardless, Mells is more than just a big body, he has quality feet and a bit of pop to him that will aid his play on either side of the ball.

Five freshmen who hardly played in 2022 who could be big in 2023

Dan Lanning didn't play true freshmen much a season ago. That allowed the majority of Oregon's 2022 signing class to redshirt with only five members avoiding it.

Regardless of Lanning's desire to play true frosh, every season second-year players develop into contributors. That's an annual tradition everywhere.

Because of the lack of playing time a year ago, it's a bit difficult to peg five players from the 2022 cycle who are ready to take a step this season, but, I've done my best to identify a few I think have a chance to play bigger roles in year two than in year one.

This list is obviously not exhaustive, and I'm not including Josh Conerly Jr., who appeared in all 13 games a season ago. The other 16 frosh are fair game though. There are several others I'm not including in my five who I could see being factors during the 2023 season as well.
