Kelly Graves weighs in on Oregon's NCAA Tournament chances after UW win

Kelly Graves doesn't know if Wednesday's win over Washington will be enough to punch his team an NCAA Tournament ticket, and he isn't going to waste any energy trying to figure it out.

"I don't know. I don't really worry about that. We're just going to try and do our best to win tomorrow," Graves told reporters following the 52-50 win in the opening round of the Pac-12 Tournament.

"We'll control what we control, and that's our effort and execution out on the basketball court. Obviously if we can be fortunate enough to get another one at least in this tournament, then I would say our chances look pretty good."

Oregon’s women’s basketball season is revived as Endyia Rogers plays ‘as good as I’ve seen’

Less than a week ago, the Oregon Ducks were reeling from a seven-game losing streak and staring at a 14-13 record late in the women’s basketball season.

The Ducks haven’t encountered circumstances this dire for at least a half-dozen years. Back then it wasn’t dire. It was called rebuilding a program.

But coach Kelly Graves liked what he saw.

“If you are around our team on a daily basis, you would not have known if we were on a seven-game winning streak or a seven-game losing streak,” Graves said.

UO TAKES ON TOP-SEEDED STANFORD

A day after rallying for a come-from-behind victory over Washington in the opening round of the 2023 Pac-12 Tournament, the ninth-seeded Oregon Ducks will take on No. 1 seed Stanford in the quarterfinals Thursday at 2:30 p.m. PT at Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas.

The Ducks got a 28-point, 11-rebound double-double from Endyia Rogers, who scored 10 of her game-high 28 in the fourth quarter to help UO erase a seven-point deficit. Te-Hina Paopao added 13 points, as the duo accounted for 41 of the team's 52 points.

The last two matchups between Oregon and Stanford in the conference tournament have come in the championship game, with UO winning both of its Pac-12 Tournament titles. The Cardinal, ranked sixth nationally, claimed the season's only meeting on Jan. 29, 62-54.

No. 9 Ducks square off with No. 1 Stanford in Pac-12 Quarterfinals

The Ducks (17-13) have now won three straight after dropping seven consecutive games prior. Despite being just above .500 overall, the team remains on the cusp of making the Big Dance. ESPN listed the Ducks as the first team out of the field in its update bracket projections on Tuesday, and Oregon is 19th in the NET rankings.

The Ducks are banged up but expected to hall their full allotment of players available on Thursday. Grace VanSlooten returned from a three-game absence on Wednesday, while Chance Gray played despite being questionable going in. VanSlooten played just 14 minutes in her first action back and remains on a minute restriction.

Ducks fail to muster enough offense to best Stanford in Pac-12 Tournament quarterfinal

The Ducks' NCAA Tournament hopes now await the selection committee's decision. Oregon has played its final game before the committee convenes on March 12 to determine the field of 68 for this year's tournament.

The final data point on their resume will be Thursday's 76-65 defeat to top-seeded Stanford in the quarterfinal round of the Pac-12 Tournament in Las Vegas.

Oregon never led during 40 minutes of play, and routinely trailed by 10 or more points. The Cardinal shot out to a seven-point lead they never relented with their advantage in the paint proving too overpowering.

Kind of amazing that they could be 17-14 and still have a NET in the 20s, probably a really interesting case for the committee to rule on.  Really does say a lot about the strength of the Pac-12 this year.

Hi spartan2785. I can't remember where I read it, but it was said that the Ducks played a harder schedule than most teams. Their NET surprises me too, but it has been in the 20s during the season.

WBB recap: Strong second half may be enough to impress NCAA committee

The Oregon Ducks women’s basketball team is going to look back upon this loss to Stanford and wonder “what if?”

Oregon played the Cardinal straight up in the second half, but a poor first half was enough to send the Ducks out of the Pac-12 tourney with a 76-65 loss to the Cardinal.

Coming into the game, the Ducks had a NET ranking of 19 and with this relatively close loss to the No. 1 seeded Cardinal, Oregon may have done just enough to get into the Big Dance. We won’t know if that’s the case until next weekend.
