Three solo homers and 3-hitter by pitching staff wraps up sweep

Oregon hit solo home runs in each of the first three innings while six Oregon pitchers combined on a three-hitter in a 5-1 win over San Diego on Sunday at PK Park.

The win clinched a series sweep for the Ducks (8-3), who outscored the Toreros (5-5-1) 25-6 in the four-game series.

For just the third time this season, Oregon put a run on the board in the first inning. Rikuu Nishida hit his first career homer to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead.

Rikuu Nishida hits first career home run as Oregon completes four-game sweep of San Diego

A week after being swept in a three game series by Santa Barbara, the Ducks move to 8-3 on the season with their sweep of San Diego.

On Sunday, Oregon took game four, 5-1, behind a home run driven approach in the first three innings. Rikuu Nishida, Colby Shade, and Gavin Grant all hit solo shots to put the Ducks on top early and for good.

Nishida, who hit seven home runs in Japan as a high schooler, is considered to have 20-grade power — the lowest grade for a baseball prospect — Nishida’s home run energized the Ducks dugout and set the tone for what would be an abnormal game.

“So good, so good,” said Nishida on how it felt to finally hit a home run. “It was the first time (I) hit a home run since I came here. It was fun.”

Mackinations: Takeaways from the first three weeks of Duck baseball

Through the first three weeks of the season, Oregon sits at 8-3, fresh off a four-game series sweep of San Diego.

Heading into the series, it was clear San Diego could swing a little. With six players entering with batting averages over .300 after their first seven games of the season, headlined by Jack Costello, Oregon's young and inexperienced pitching staff was going to be put to the test.

Well, all things considered, they passed with flying colors. The Ducks conceded only six runs over four games as Jackson Pace, and Leo Uelmen really solidified their rotation spots.

Oregon's season has only worked in sweeps, as the Ducks swept Xavier to start, were swept by UCSB, and then the aforementioned sweepage of San Diego. By that philosophy, UCLA should be in line for four straight wins next weekend.

However, we know that's not how baseball works. We know that baseball is a marathon and most certainly not a sprint. It's hard to come away with clear and conclusive takeaways from the first five miles of this marathon of a season, but I will try.
