Recommended Posts

There are 15 spring practices scheduled this season. Each practice will have it's own thread on OBDF and all articles in that thread will only pertain to that particular practice.

This should help in keeping information organized and make it easier for our readers to navigate.

FYI, in this article below you will see the dates for the practices scheduled. Be sure to check in later today as practice articles, interviews, and updates start coming in.

Oregon Football Spring Camp Updates: Practice Two

The sun once again shown down on the HDC practice turfs for day two of spring workouts.

The Ducks remained in shells for their final day before taking two weeks off for spring break. Once again, media was able to watch the first 18 or so minutes of practice which was comprised of stretch, special teams work and position drills.

Special teams again highlighted the drilling media took in. Punters Luke Donne and Ross James continue to compete, and show off the quality of their legs.

For the second straight practice, Dunne was the more consistent of the two, featuring more accurate and higher kicks. James had the longest punt of the day, hitting one that traveled well over 50 yards on a line. Dunne’s best punts rivaled that in length but were significantly higher.

Spring Ball Takeaways: Dan Lanning stresses consistency in second practice for Ducks

It appeared that the consistency was there for the Ducks on Saturday morning as they made their way back out of the Hatfield-Dowlin Complex for their second spring practice of the year.

Media members were allowed to watch the first 15-20 minutes of practice, where we once again saw some stretching, both static and dynamic, followed by special teams drills, ball security drills, and a quick individual period.

Here are some of the takeaways from the day.

Photos of Oregon's Spring Practice No. 2

Here are the photos of the day's practice as the Ducks continue to ramp up their spring football work and get closer to April 29th's Spring Football Game inside Autzen Stadium.

The Oregon Ducks were working out in just shorts, helmets, and jerseys as they still are a few practices away from being cleared for full-contact practice.

While Oregon was on the field working through practice, the Oregon Ducks hosted roughly over 25 high school and Transfer Portal recruits for unofficial visits during the weekend.

One of those players on campus this weekend to check out Oregon was 4-star offensive line commit Fox Crader out of the state of Washington.

For the most part, there were not many things to note other than a couple of absences and a couple of limited players. However, there was a large group of recruits in town to watch the practice and take in the Ducks this early in the season.

Observations from Oregon's second spring practice

Oregon opened practice with special teams work that featured a group of kick returners fielding kicks from Cam Lewis and Grant Meadors, and a group of returners fielding punts from Luke Dunne and Ross James.

Oregon’s offensive linemen worked on a pull-blocking technique drill early in the day while first-year offensive line coach A’Lique Terry and first-year assistant Mike Cavanaugh watched closely.

During the third period of the day, skill-position players and defenders went head-to-head in a non-contact version of “mod bracket” that featured quarterbacks Bo Nix, Ty Thompson, and Austin Novosad throwing swing passes to a pass-catcher, who then worked to beat a defensive back and a linebacker in a one-on-one matchup along the sideline.

Lanning expecting more early enrollees to arrive when team reconvenes in April

Twenty-six scholarship newcomers were included on the program's spring football roster released on Thursday, and that number could reach 30 very soon, head coach Dan Lanning indicated following Saturday's practice.

"I don't have an exact number, but we'll see a few more guys come in when the next term starts," said Lanning, who elected not to name who might be arriving over the next few weeks.

The large crop of new faces is currently comprised of nine Division-1 transfers, 16 prep early enrollees and one junior college addition. The Ducks have just one committed transfer portal player yet to enroll (Ole Miss defensive back Tysheem Johnson) and 13 additional prep players, including five-star wide receiver and class headliner Jurrion Dickey.

Notable quotes from Dan Lanning after Oregon's second spring practice

It’s hard not to be in a good mood when the sun is shining and football is being played.

Lanning talked about what he’s looking for from his team as they go into spring break and are off for a couple of weeks, and how they can get better coming back. He also touched on the recruits in town, and what he’s liked from the first two days of practice so far.

Here are some of the most notable quotes from Lanning on Saturday.

After 2 practices, the Ducks now go on spring break. “You got to be great decision-makers,” Lanning said.

Everything Dan Lanning said after Oregon's second spring practice

"All right, good second day. We got more reps today, we pushed the tempo of practice a little bit more some fatigue showed up. You want to do that today before you get a little bit of a break because we're about to have some time, so you really want to push guys bodies and you saw that. You see how guys respond to fatigue. It was good day at work. Guys worked really hard and it was certainly a positive."

Jestin Jacobs full-go, while Junior Angilau 'limited' over first two days

Two of Oregon's transfer portal additions suffered season-ending injuries last fall at their previous schools. Dan Lanning said on Saturday afternoon that Iowa transfer Jestin Jacobsand Texas transfer Junior Angilau are at different points of journey to return.

"Junior's limited," Lanning said. "Jestin's really been able to do everything with us when it comes to spring ball."

Dan Lanning trying to set expectations for Ducks before spring break

Lanning referenced the upcoming spring break before the next school term as to why they pushed practice a little harder today, and the break could be a really good reset for a lot of players on the team, particularly some of the early enrollee freshmen.

The transition from high school to college is difficult enough on its own but jumping into Division I college football when you could still be attending high school is an entirely different animal.

“I think they’re handling it really well. I think we had a great transition team too when it goes with the prep for school and football,” Lanning said. “We have a detailed plan with what we do so those guys have handled it well.”

Why Oregon has a two-week break during Spring Football

The Oregon Duck football program held two of its 13 spring practices this past week and now the Ducks will be off for over two weeks time before they resume again in April. So what's with the extended break between practice times and why not just usher all of the spring ball into April?

"For us, it's about spacing. You'd like to go Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday for practices," said head coach Dan Lanning. "We don't want to go into May because we have a recruiting window in May that we want to go get our coaches out in May."

Austin Novosad shows promise, room for growth early on in spring practice

Novosad is one of the many young athletes that arrived in camp early in hopes of getting a jump start on his career. Unless injuries occur, 2023 will be a redshirt season for the 6-foot-3, 185-pounder from Dripping Springs, Texas, but being able to get his feet wet in the spring will ultimately give him more experience down the road.

Media members were not allowed to watch more than 20 minutes of the start of practice on either Thursday or Saturday, so we did not get to see Novosad in action. However, I’m told by someone who watched the practice that there were multiple turnovers, and Novosad was responsible for at least one of them.

Should everything stay status quo with no injuries and no transfers between now and fall camp next season, the battle between Novosad and Ty Thompson to immediately replace Bo Nix in 2024 could be an interesting one, to say the least.

Dan Lanning likes what he sees out of QB Austin Novosad, but naturally, there’s a lot to improve upon.

Five takeaways from Oregon's first two days of spring practice

The first glimpse of Oregon's 2023 football roster came last week, as the program held its first two practices of spring. The team now goes on a two-week break (here's an explanation for why) before reconvening on April 4.

Media was able to watch about 18 minutes from both workouts and Dan Lanning spoke following each session as well. These practice opportunities offered limited information but enough to draw some early conclusions.

Below are the five things I found most interesting from the opening of spring practice.

Lanning looking for consistency, better kick placement from special teams unit during spring camp

It was no secret Oregon's special teams unit was underwhelming during the 2022 season.

The stats back it up, as Oregon ranked No. 119 in punt return defense (13.60 yards allowed), No. 117 in Net Punt (35.69 net yards), and No. 125 in kick return defense (25.20 yards allowed). Special teams performance has been a struggle of Oregon's for multiple years now, but first-year special teams coordinator Joe Lorig certainly had his work cut out for him this offseason.

Head coach Dan Lanning has preached positional versatility to start this spring camp, and while they're about to enter a two-week hiatus, Lanning has made it clear that kick coverage teams and ball location are the two areas he and Lorig are highlighting this spring.
