Oregon looks for new lineup to continue to 'click' against Northwestern State

With the return of prolific hitters in Tanner Smith and Drew Cowley on top of a top-five recruiting class, it has taken time for the Ducks to get their offense in check.

Lineup changes stole the show for the last two weeks, as every regular starter had been moved at least once. Some were significant like Rikuu Nishida sliding from first to ninth or Owen Diodati entirely out of the lineup for all three games in the Washington State series.

But, a combination seemed to have cracked some code on Saturday and Sunday against the Cougars, as the Ducks scored 27 runs combined. In those two games, Oregon put up nine extra-base hits, five home runs, 33 total hits, and 12 walks.

Smith sets program hits record as Ducks roll to win

Oregon hit a modern-era program record six home runs while Tanner Smith set a new Ducks' record for career hits in a 16-1 nonconference win over Northwestern State at PK Park on Friday night.

Smith started Oregon's 14-hit attack with a second-inning double that broke Gabe Matthews' (2017-21) school record for career hits. Smith's two-bagger gave him 247 for his career and the double was the 55th of his career which is four shy of setting a new school record.

Junior third baseman Sabin Ceballos hit two of Oregon's six homers with Smith, Gavin Grant, Jacob Walsh and Dominic Hellman all adding one long ball apiece. Hellman's home run was the freshman's first career bomb.

Tanner Smith sets all-time hits record as Oregon trounces Northwestern State 16-1

A special day for Tanner Smith turned into a special day for Oregon on Friday. The veteran left fielder wasted no time setting Oregon’s all-time hits record, smacking a double in the second inning to the delight of the Ducks’ dugout and the crowd at PK Park. It was his 247th career hit — and he added two more for good measure.

“Just an immense amount of gratitude to think about all the people that have helped me get to that point,” Smith said while choking up in his postgame press conference. “All the coaches, all the players, there’s been some unbelievable people that have helped me put a record like that up there, and I gotta give thanks to everybody that has.”

Smith and the Ducks never looked back, going on to hit six homers in a 16-1 thrashing of Northwestern State. It included a pair of three-run bombs from Sabin Ceballos and the first home run of Dominic Hellman’s career. Smith and Gavin Grant were also each one hit shy of a cycle.

Ducks continue offensive roll in doubleheader sweep

Oregon ran its streak of scoring double digits to five games in a doubleheader sweep of Northwestern State on Saturday at PK Park, winning 12-7 and 13-3 to take a 3-0 series lead.

A day after hitting a school record six home runs in a game in a 16-1 win on Friday, the Ducks (14-7) hit six home runs combined in the doubleheader. The 12 home runs in three games are the most in Oregon modern-era baseball history, besting the old record of eight hit in both 2021 and 2022.

Tanner Smith hit home runs in both games, running his streak of home runs in consecutive games to four dating back to the series finale at Washington State last Sunday. Smith joins Kenyon Yovan (2021) as the only Ducks to hit homers in four consecutive games.

Tanner Smith homers twice, Oregon baseball sweeps doubleheader with Northwestern State

Tanner Smith led an offensive onslaught for Oregon, which swept its doubleheader with Northwestern State.

Smith went a combined 4 for 6 with a double, two home runs and seven RBIs in wins of 12-7 and 13-3 for the Ducks Saturday afternoon at PK Park.

“It’s been team baseball and complete baseball,” Oregon coach Mark Wasikowski said. “I’ve liked the quality starts we’re getting and the relief work. I thought Grayson (Grinsell) was really good today. Coming in and finishing that game up and the start by Leo in the second game was really good.”
