Baseball recap: Stoffal throws a gem as Ducks defeat Stanford

The Pac-12 might need to rename the Pitcher of the Week Award to the Jace Stoffal Award.

For the second week in a row, Oregon’s Friday night starter absolutely stifled a Pac-12 team, this time being Stanford, as the Ducks defeated the No. 7 Cardinal 4-0 at PK Park.

With the win, the Ducks moved to 23-9 on the season and 8-5 in the conference, while Stanford dropped to 22-10 and 10-3 in Pac-12 action.

Stoffal needed 118 pitches in the complete-game shutout win as he struck out eight Cardinal hitters and just three hits. It was just the second time this season Stanford didn’t plate a run.

SP Jace Stoffal throws complete game three-hitter as Oregon downs No. 8 Stanford

A picturesque night at PK Park set the environment for Oregon to begin its three-game series against No. 8 Stanford.

With the sun shining, Oregon's brightest star pitcher, Jace Stoffal, tossed a complete game three-hitter, striking out eight and allowing four base runners all night.

"Obviously, just a very blessed to be able to go out there and do it every day," said Stoffal. "But it takes more than just me obviously. To give up only three hits today it's the pitch calling with Jake Angier and having trust in that.

"Obviously the defense is just lights out, we have the best defense in the country. And getting the home runs, you know just demoralized into their team, energy for us and that goes a long ways."

Stoffal Shuts Out No. 8 Stanford, 4-0

Oregon's Friday night starter continued his hot streak and the Ducks blasted three home runs to support him.

Injuries have put some roles on Oregon's pitching staff in question this spring, but as far as the Friday night starter goes, the Ducks have an answer.

Jace Stoffal threw his fourth straight quality start and the UO baseball program's first complete-game shutout since 2017 on Friday, in a 4-0 victory for the Ducks over No. 8 Stanford before 2,506 fans in PK Park.

Stoffal shut down the Pac-12's most prolific offense, holding the Cardinal to three hits and following up seven shutout innings over Oregon State the week before with a 118-pitch complete game.

"He was just on point," UO coach Mark Wasikowski said. "A really spectacular, tough kid, and he's starting to feel like not only does he belong at this level, but he feels like he wants to be something a lot more than that."

Another Gem Gives Ducks Series Win

Through two games of their weekend series, Stanford's elite lineup has been no match for the Oregon baseball team's starting pitching.

One day after Jace Stoffal's three-hit shutout of the No. 7 Cardinal, Logan Mercado also threw a complete game as the Ducks (24-9) won 8-1 before 2,322 fans in PK Park. Oregon's lineup hit three home runs for the second day in a row, the Ducks again played errorless defense and Mercado made it stand up by allowing one run on five hits and a walk with seven strikeouts.

"Logan Mercado's bulldog mentality set the tone, and the guys in the dugout were just feeding off of his energy," UO coach Mark Wasikowski said. "It's just a ton of fun to be around these guys right now."

Logan Mercado pitched Oregon's second complete game in two days against No. 7 Stanford on Saturday.

Oregon secures series victory over No. 8 Stanford behind complete game from Logan Mercado

Against the upper-tier Pac-12 competition, Oregon has followed a similar pattern in those matchups.

In three game series' the Ducks have come away with game one wins, a closely contested loss in game two, and a game three blowout. It's happened exactly this way against No. 22 UCLA and last week against Oregon State.

Saturday marked an opportunity for the Ducks to write a different story. Behind three home runs and a complete game by Logan Mercado, the Ducks did just that, taking down No. 8 Stanford 8-1 and securing a series victory.

"I think last week, they (Oregon State) worked me really well and got me out a little earlier than I wanted to," said Mercado on his start. "I think this team was a good matchup for me, you know, played into my stuff well. I just had to execute pitches and mix them well. And luckily, that's what we did today and ended up getting a win."

Ducks Drop Finale, Settle For Series Win Over No. 7 Stanford

Oregon settled for a weekend series win over No. 7 Stanford after dropping the finale on Sunday, 6-4, before 1,351 fans at PK Park.

After two dominant starts in a pair of wins to open the series, the Ducks (24-10) were undone by a season-high 10 walks Sunday. Two came with the bases loaded, helping the Cardinal rally back from an early 4-0 deficit.

"You don't win many games when you walk 10," UO head coach Mark Wasikowski said.

The Cardinal entered the weekend tied for first place in the Pac-12, and Oregon was fifth. The series win moved the Ducks into a tie for fourth with USC at 9-6, 2.5 games behind first-place Arizona State. The Sun Devils open a three-game series at PK Park beginning April 28, with the second game of the series to be played following Oregon's spring football game in Autzen Stadium.

Walks loom large as Oregon drops series finale to No. 7 Stanford

A banner weekend for the Oregon baseball program nearly got even better on Sunday.

But, after clinching a series win on Saturday, the Ducks squandered an early lead in the finale and missed out on a chance to sweep one of the top teams in the nation.

Oregon fell, 6-4, to No. 7 Stanford Sunday at PK Park in Eugene.

With the loss, UO fell to 24-10 on the year and 9-6 in Pac-12 play. The Cardinal, meanwhile, kept pace in the Pac-12 title race and improved to 23-10 on the year and 11-4 in conference play.

Sabin Ceballos went 2-for-4 with three RBI for the Ducks. Bryce Boettcher, who is also a walk-on defensive back for Oregon’s football team, got his fourth consecutive start in right field and went 1-for-3 with a home run.

But Oregon’s pitching staff walked 10 batters on the day. Ultimately, the free passes proved costly.
