Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 14 Share Posted April 15, 2023 Baseball recap: Stoffal throws a gem as Ducks defeat Stanford The Pac-12 might need to rename the Pitcher of the Week Award to the Jace Stoffal Award. For the second week in a row, Oregon’s Friday night starter absolutely stifled a Pac-12 team, this time being Stanford, as the Ducks defeated the No. 7 Cardinal 4-0 at PK Park. With the win, the Ducks moved to 23-9 on the season and 8-5 in the conference, while Stanford dropped to 22-10 and 10-3 in Pac-12 action. Stoffal needed 118 pitches in the complete-game shutout win as he struck out eight Cardinal hitters and just three hits. It was just the second time this season Stanford didn’t plate a run. SP Jace Stoffal throws complete game three-hitter as Oregon downs No. 8 Stanford A picturesque night at PK Park set the environment for Oregon to begin its three-game series against No. 8 Stanford. With the sun shining, Oregon's brightest star pitcher, Jace Stoffal, tossed a complete game three-hitter, striking out eight and allowing four base runners all night. "Obviously, just a very blessed to be able to go out there and do it every day," said Stoffal. "But it takes more than just me obviously. To give up only three hits today it's the pitch calling with Jake Angier and having trust in that. "Obviously the defense is just lights out, we have the best defense in the country. And getting the home runs, you know just demoralized into their team, energy for us and that goes a long ways." Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 28 Share Posted April 16, 2023 Another Gem Gives Ducks Series Win Through two games of their weekend series, Stanford's elite lineup has been no match for the Oregon baseball team's starting pitching. One day after Jace Stoffal's three-hit shutout of the No. 7 Cardinal, Logan Mercado also threw a complete game as the Ducks (24-9) won 8-1 before 2,322 fans in PK Park. Oregon's lineup hit three home runs for the second day in a row, the Ducks again played errorless defense and Mercado made it stand up by allowing one run on five hits and a walk with seven strikeouts. "Logan Mercado's bulldog mentality set the tone, and the guys in the dugout were just feeding off of his energy," UO coach Mark Wasikowski said. "It's just a ton of fun to be around these guys right now." Another Gem Gives Ducks Series Win - University of Oregon Athletics GODUCKS.COM Logan Mercado pitched Oregon's second complete game in two days against No. 7 Stanford on Saturday. Oregon secures series victory over No. 8 Stanford behind complete game from Logan Mercado Against the upper-tier Pac-12 competition, Oregon has followed a similar pattern in those matchups. In three game series' the Ducks have come away with game one wins, a closely contested loss in game two, and a game three blowout. It's happened exactly this way against No. 22 UCLA and last week against Oregon State. Saturday marked an opportunity for the Ducks to write a different story. Behind three home runs and a complete game by Logan Mercado, the Ducks did just that, taking down No. 8 Stanford 8-1 and securing a series victory. "I think last week, they (Oregon State) worked me really well and got me out a little earlier than I wanted to," said Mercado on his start. "I think this team was a good matchup for me, you know, played into my stuff well. I just had to execute pitches and mix them well. And luckily, that's what we did today and ended up getting a win." After two dominant starts in a pair of wins to open the series, the Ducks (24-10) were undone by a season-high 10 walks Sunday. Two came with the bases loaded, helping the Cardinal rally back from an early 4-0 deficit. "You don't win many games when you walk 10," UO head coach Mark Wasikowski said. The Cardinal entered the weekend tied for first place in the Pac-12, and Oregon was fifth. The series win moved the Ducks into a tie for fourth with USC at 9-6, 2.5 games behind first-place Arizona State. The Sun Devils open a three-game series at PK Park beginning April 28, with the second game of the series to be played following Oregon's spring football game in Autzen Stadium.
