Pennsylvania Duck Moderator No. 1 Share Posted April 19, 2023 Wasikowski provides injury updates ahead of three-game series against Cal With the 2023 season more than halfway over, the No. 23 Ducks head into a three-game series against Cal with a 24-11 record, 9-6 in the conference. The conference wins include a series victory over No. 9 Stanford, but Oregon is coming off a stunning upset loss to Portland on Tuesday, losing 10-9. As the Cal series approaches, Oregon will be without 1B/DH Dominic Hellman for the foreseeable future. Hellman, a top-70 recruit in the 2022 class, has played sparingly this year, primarily due to injury. Hellman was limited in the early stretch of the season due to a lower leg injury and has not played since the Oregon State series on April 9th. On the pitching side of the ball, Oregon has been without its Friday night start from a season ago, Isaac Ayon, for the entire year. Ayon suffered an arm injury during the fall, has continued rehab, and is progressing steadily, according to Wasikowski. "He's progressing well, and I look to see him, hopefully, sooner rather than later," said Wasikowski. "But we're definitely planning on having him back by the end of the season for sure." As for other injury notes, shortstop Carter Garate, another freshman from the Ducks' No. 5 ranked class, continues to be day-to-day but is "trending in the right direction." Oregon and Cal begin a three-game series starting Friday at 7 PM. Ducks drop game two at Cal - University of Oregon Athletics GODUCKS.COM Oregon and Cal will play the rubbermatch at 12:05 p.m. on Sunday Cal's late inning two-run homer takes down No. 23 Oregon Looking to win its second straight Pac-12 series, Oregon battled back from a four-run deficit in the sixth inning, but it was not enough, as the Golden Bears took game two, 8-6. Despite the sunny conditions at Stu Gordon Stadium, it was not a bright outing for Oregon starter Logan Mercado. After a complete game against No. 9 Stanford last week, Mercado failed to get out of the fourth inning against Cal, throwing 3.1 innings, allowing six earned runs, and walking five batters. As the Cardinal batters chased pitches out of the zone last week, Cal batters were patient in their approaches, working counts and drawing walks. Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 39 Share Posted April 23, 2023 DUCKS CLINCH SERIES AT CAL A quality combined pitching performance and a late push allowed Oregon to seal a 9-3 win against California Sunday at Stu Gordon Field. The afternoon victory gave the Ducks (26-12, 11-7 Pac-12) their seventh series win and fourth in Pac-12 play. Ceballos drove in a team-leading 43rd RBI of the season, needing three more to crack the single-season top 10 in the category … Nishida's ninth-inning home run extended Oregon's streak of consecutive games with a home run to eight, the third longest streak in school history … Crowley's two hits gives the senior 13 multiple-hit games in the last 23 games. Ducks clinch series at Cal - University of Oregon Athletics GODUCKS.COM A four-run ninth inning secured the Ducks' 26th victory of the season. No. 23 Oregon picks up series victory against Cal with 9-3 win Sunday marked another opportunity for Oregon to take a series victory over Cal, turning to true freshman RHP Matthew Grabmann for his fifth start of the season and first since March 26th against Northwestern State. Oregon’s Sunday starters have struggled for most of the season, but Grabmann turned in arguably his best performance of the season, helping the Ducks to a 9-3 victory. Freshman Leo Uelmen usually gets the start on Sundays for the Ducks, but after multiple poor starts, head coach Mark Wasikowski and pitching coach Jake Angier tabbed Grabmann as the starter against Cal. Grabmann worked both sides of the plate with his fastball effectively, throwing four innings of one-run baseball, striking out three, and, most importantly, not allowing a single walk.
