WATCH: Tez Johnson turns on the afterburners for the touchdown

Transfer receiver Tez Johnson made his first catch as aDuck a memorable one, Spring Game or not.

The 5-foot-8 receiver formerly from Troy, turned a 10-yard crossing route into a 63-yard touchdown thanks to his speed and agility. Once he was out in the open, Johnson race down the sideline, leaving defenders in his dust, if there was dust.

Then at the three, he pulled out a move seen on the PlayStation, a side juke and then the end zone. If that’s the kind of plays Johnson has in store for the Pac-12, defensive coordinators won’t have a good time in 2023.

The play was especially impressive since the defenses were dominating until Johnson got his hands on the ball.

Rewinding Oregon Ducks spring game, with Bo Nix’s Green team winning 23-20

We were live from Autzen Stadium for Saturday’s Oregon spring game, which saw the Ducks split into the Yellow and Green teams. Rosters can be found here.

Bo Nix threw for a touchdown and ran for another late in the fourth quarter that iced the game for the Green team as that squad won 23-20.

Ty Thompson threw for two touchdowns for the Yellow team, including a 63-yarder to Tez Johnson in the third quarter. Thompson also fired a 17-yard scoring pass to Kris Hutson on the final play of the spring game.

Read the recap by quarter in the article below. The 4th quarter is at the top of the article, with the first quarter at the end. Be sure to scroll down if you want to read the quarters in order.

Green Team edges Yellow in low-scoring Oregon spring game

The score and manner with which Saturday's spring was played more closely matched what most would expect from a program led by a defensive coach.

The scoreboard didn't move in the first quarter and the game featured just five total touchdowns (two coming in the final minute of regulation) with the Green Team pulling out a 23-20 win — capped by a Bo Nix touchdown run with a minute left in regulation. The game was played before an announced attendance of 45,000 fans, who were treated to clear skies and a warm afternoon sun.

None of Oregon's quarterbacks produced at the highest of levels, as the newly constructed defense made life difficult on pass and run downs.

Nix finished the day completing 19-of-40 passes for 193 with one passing and one rushing score. Ty Thompson was missed his first six passes and Yellow failed to pick up a first down until their final second quarter drive. Thompson picked up his play in the second though, finishing with 274 yards on 16-of-34 passing and two touchdowns without  a turnover.

Freshman Austin Novosad received far less work, going 2-of-8 for 9 yards.

Ducks Wire Player of the Game: WR Tez Johnson

For the first time in 5 months, there was football in Autzen Stadium on Saturday. The Oregon Ducks roster — bolstered with new recruits and transfers — was split into two teams: green and yellow for Saturday’s spring game.

While there was great play from Troy Franklin and Kris Hutson, WR Tez Johnson was the star of Saturday’s game. Johnson finished the game with 3 catches 78 yards and a touchdown. Tez’s touchdown was a 63-yard play, with 59 of those yards coming after the catch.

Johnson caught Ty Thompson’s pass in the middle of the field and then bounced outside making multiple defenders miss as he took it to the house for the Yellow team’s first score.

After the game, players had a lot to say about Tez’s performance, specifically his staggering speed out on the field.

“He’s not the biggest, but he is the fastest,” said Duck’s linebacker Jefferey Bassa.

DUCKS PUT ON SPRING SHOW

The Ducks put on a show Saturday for the annual Spring Game.

Big-time alumni dotted the sidelines in Autzen Stadium, big plays were produced on both sides of the ball, and some newcomers had the chance to make a big impression on the estimated crowd of 45,000 sun-splashed fans on hand to take it all in.

The Spring Game was technically practice No. 14 out of 15 for the Ducks this spring, with the final workout scheduled for Monday morning. But it was the showcase event on the spring schedule, the unofficial conclusion to a camp that allowed veterans to illustrate their development, newcomers to showcase their talents and the staff to get a sense of the team they will field when the 2023 season opens in September.

Defense, long passes highlight Oregon Ducks spring game

Oregon’s defense set the tone early in Saturday’s spring game.

Mase Funa had a tackle for loss and three of 11 pass breakups for the Green team, which defeated the Yellow squad 23-20 on a picturesque afternoon at Autzen Stadium.

Funa batted down the first two passes of the day by Ty Thompson, nearly intercepting the first.

“That’s the bomb play that the offense loves to run,” Funa said. “They’ve been running it all spring ball. I’ve seen it; they motioned the tight end to go three open, they jumped the back to my side. I was like oh, boom, he’s going to do it. I tried to jump it. If I didn’t have the (arm) brace, I would have had the flexibility to catch. No excuses, I got to catch it.”

7 major takeaways from Oregon Ducks' spring game

After months without football inside Autzen Stadium, there were hours of fun to be had in Eugene on Saturday afternoon while the annual Oregon Ducks’ spring game took place.

While it was an inter-squad scrimmage that didn’t ultimately mean a ton in the grand scheme of things, it offered Oregon fans and media members a chance to see some of the new faces on the team, and what the updated version of the Ducks will look like going into 2023.

We saw several highlights, a breakout performance from Tez Johnson and Cole Martin, and the grittiness and tenacity that makes QB Bo Nix special.

We also got to see a roller-coaster performance from Ty Thompson that should ultimately leave fans with a bit more confidence than they had coming into the game. Let’s start there.

Here are my biggest takeaways from the spring game, starting with No. 13.

Top-ranked recruits react to Oregon Ducks spring game visit

While the fans in the stands were soaking in a beautiful sunny day in Eugene and enjoying the chance to get back inside Autzen Stadium to watch the Oregon Ducks’ annual spring game, a large group of top-rated recruits was down on the sidelines taking it all in, enjoying the raucous atmosphere for a scrimmage in April.

While it’s always important to make sure that fans are happy, one of the biggest objectives of the weekend for Dan Lanning and his staff was making sure that the recruits in attendance enjoyed their visits. Be it meetings with coaches, tours of the facility, photo shoots in the uniforms, or the game itself, this was a big weekend for the Ducks to make an impression on some of the most talented players in the 2024 class and beyond.

To nobody’s surprise, a vast majority of the recruits left with great reviews. Here are some of the top reactions on Twitter after Saturday’s game.

Oregon football: 3 takeaways from the Ducks' spring game

The Oregon Ducks football team concluded its spring game on Saturday with the green team defeating the yellow team, 23-20.

The spring game is not solely about the final score and stats. It's also a way to showcase how well the Ducks can perform on a stage with all the bells and whistles that go with a Division I football game.

"Overall happy with the performance," head coach Dan Lanning said after the game. "Certainly, some things that we want to clean up and fix, but I thought it was a good indication ... of the season and where we can get better moving forward."

Oregon has the potential for another great year after the Ducks went 10-3 last season, including a win over North Carolina in the Holiday Bowl.

Here are three takeaways from the Oregon spring game:

Column: After familiar start, QB Ty Thompson showed growth at UO spring game

For the first 29 minutes and six seconds of game time on Saturday afternoon, things went about as poorly as they could have for Oregon Ducks redshirt sophomore quarterback Ty Thompson.

At the annual spring game with a chance to show his offseason improvement as the leader of the yellow team, Thompson completed just one of his first eight passes, and the single completion came on an underhand pitch that traveled less than a yard in the air.

Things could have been worse, of course; of those eight pass attempts, three could have easily been intercepted. The very first play of the game was almost disastrous, with Thompson locking in on a running back flaring out to the right and throwing an ill-advised screen pass despite the fact that LB Mase Funa had jumped the route and was ready to take it for a TD the other way.

Fortunately for Thompson — and every Oregon fan in the building who was desperate to see even a glimmer of hope from the Ducks’ former 4-star quarterback — the pass fell incomplete, and kept Thompson’s turnover record clean for the day.

Breakout performances highlight Oregon's 2023 spring game

Last year we saw the offense light up the scoreboard but after a scoreless first quarter, it became clear Saturday that each team’s defense was much more in sync than either offense during Oregon's spring game.

Yes, it’s still spring football and offensive players in particular take more time to get fully acclimated to their groupings, but questions about how the defense stacks up to the offense at this point, have been answered.

Though it might’ve not been the most exciting game to watch in the first half, the defensive physicality that head coach Dan Lanning has emphasized as a difference between his first spring as head coach and this one really did show up.

A lot of eyes were drawn to Jordan Burch coming off of the edge, and for good reason.

The South Carolina transfer has been lauded by his coaches and teammates for his sheer stature and how he attacks rushing the quarterback, and he put all the talk to show on Saturday by generating at least two “would-be” sacks and affected quarterback Ty Thompson’s decision-making on more than one occasion.

Ty Thompson showed it all during 2023 Spring Game

For how bad the Ducks' sophomore quarterback looked in the first half, he looked like the quarterback the Ducks were hoping to see in the second half.

Thompson connected on a 63-yard touchdown pass to Tez Johnson that allowed the speedy receiver to showcase his breakaway speed. Thompson later connected with junior Kris Hutson on a deep post that saw the Ducks gain 70 yards before scoring one play later. Kyle Kasper caught not one but two darts thrown his way by Thompson that only Kasper could catch.

"To be able to get some shots at the end, I think that was big," said Lanning.

Thompson finished the game leading all quarterbacks with 274 yards passing two touchdowns, and he completed 16 of his 34 pass attempts.

"He had some incredible throws, deep throws, touch throws, firm throws," said Nix. "I think he showed it all today."

Mase Funa feels Oregon defenders 'showed what we have this season'

Mase Funa nearly opened Saturday's scrimmage in the same fashion he closed last fall's miraculous win in Pullman.

The senior defender leapt into the backfield, identifying the play call based up on the tight end's alignment, and collided with Ty Thompson's pass attempt to Bucky Irving. Unable to complete the catch to make another house call, this pass landed on the turf with a thud.

"I tried to jump it. If I didn't have the elbow brace, I would've had the flexibility to catch it," he said. "But, no excuses. I've got to catch it."

His decisive action speaks to his improved football IQ, but also to the monotony of spring practice where both sides of the ball have been exposed to the entirety of the opposing side's playbook.

Funa's play set the tone for what was a dominant first half performance from both defenses. Neither offense scored in the first quarter, and Funa's Green Team held the opposing offense without a first down until the final series of the opening half.

Oregon's offense showed its potential of picking up where it left off last season

The 2023 Oregon Football Spring Game was a chance for the Ducks to hit the field and show the public what their football program looks like roughly four months before the football season starts in the fall. For Oregon's offense, it was the first look at how new Offensive Coordinator Will Stein is putting his stamp on the Oregon Ducks.

"Offensively, our job is to get our best players the ball as many times as possible. Plays are highly overrated. It's about the players," said Stein earlier in the spring. "Here at Oregon, we have unbelievable players."

The Ducks did just that on Saturday and got their talented skill players into the football quickly. We saw deep shots that resulted in long touchdown plays being converted, we saw explosion plays over the middle of the field via passing attacks, and Oregon's running game showed off their cut-back abilities that were so popular last season.

"I feel like we showed a lot. We took a few shots, we did some cutback, we did some naked, we did a lot of it, but we held a lot because it's the spring game," Oregon senior QB Bo Nix said of Will Stein's offensive debut. "I am excited to play with him and see what he does on a game day."

Tez Johnson excited fanbase with sizzling touchdown in spring game debut

No play on Saturday afternoon stirred the Autzen faithful more than Tez Johnson's house call.

A defensive-dominated contest for one half, Johnson inserted some offense into the day's mix in the third quarter when he broke a pair of tackles, found a crease down the sideline and won a foot race to the end zone for a 63-yard score.

"Tez is that guy where right when he gets a step on you, he can be very dangerous," linebacker Jeffrey Bassa said of Johnson. "He's not the biggest, but he is the fastest."

Simply put, this is why Johnson is in Eugene. A highly-productive two-year starter at Troy, Johnson tortured Sun Belt competition with his blend of agility, speed and creativity.

Oregon's array of offensive weapons was vast a year ago, but it did lack a player like him. Bucky Irving and Noah Whittington are capable of being game-breakers, but from the backfield, and neither Troy Franklin or Kris Hutson have proven to be nearly as adept with the ball in their hands.

Ducks Football Spring Game Recap

Spring college football games aren’t played with the same intensity, game-planning or quality as the Fall regular season. Players with even minor knocks are frequently held out, the 1s, 2s, 3s and 4s are all mixed up together, the quarterbacks are “no touchy” and there’s more of an emphasis on running as many plays as possible as opposed to clock management.

So it was on Saturday as Oregon Green and Oregon Yellow faced off in Autzen Stadium in front of the second-largest Spring Game crowd (~45,000) in the Pac-12 this year. After trailing late into the 4th quarter, the Green team rallied behind quarterback Bo Nix for a 23 - 20 victory.

Fans got a long look at Nix, back for his final season, running the Green offense, as well as putative back-up Ty Thompson running the Yellow. Freshman Austin Novosad was the only other quarterback to appear. He took reps for both teams.

None of the quarterbacks looked particularly sharp, although there were some ugly dropped balls, especially in the first half, which didn’t help anyone’s stats. There were also good plays on both sides, including a Thompson pass into some middle-of-the-field traffic that Tez Johnson turned into a 63-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Thompson would also find Kris Hutson for a touchdown as time ran out in the game.

Coaches seemed pleased particularly with the defensive lines for both teams. Early on - as Funa’s near interception indicates - both defenses were able to disrupt what the offenses were trying to do. They kept the game low-scoring with a scoreless first quarter and Green leading just 10 - 0 at the half as a result with Camden Lewis kicking one of his three field goals on the day.

Lewis kicked a 44-yarder for Green at the end of the third quarter, matching his longest from 2022 to close the score to 14 - 13. Running yards generally were tough to come by - Freshman Dante Dowdell led all rushers with 32 yards on just 7 carries.

Report Card: Defense looks improved while offense showed flashes at spring game

The Spring Game brought some interesting things to the forefront. Hopefully, for the Ducks’ sake, the high points will stick around for the season, while the handful of low points will be ironed out in the coming months.

We can start with the quarterback situation. Bo Nix is obviously the top guy on the depth chart, and he played well on Saturday, though the game didn’t call for many heroics from No. 10. Ty Thompson struggled mightily at the start of the game, but he eventually settled in and had a great second half that should give fans some confidence going forward.

There were several highlights with some receivers, though. When they got the chance, Troy Franklin, Traeshon Holden, Kris Hutson, and Tez Johnson all made big plays and showed off their unique talents.

But Oregon fans should get used to what the Ducks showed them on Saturday as long as Dan Lanning is in Eugene. They saw a dominating defensive attack that snuffed out a good offense and very talented players on that side of the ball.

Here’s our official report card for the 2023 Spring Game.

Oregon teammates rave about WR Tez Johnson following spring game

Oregon expected an influx of speed when it added former Troy receiver Tez Johnson from the transfer portal this offseason, and Duck fans were treated to exactly that on Saturday.

During the team’s annual spring game, Johnson finished with three receptions for 78 yards and a touchdown while working with backup quarterback Ty Thompson. In a day where the defense took most of the headlines, Johnson provided one of the splashiest offensive plays when he broke a pair of tackles in the third quarter and raced down the field for a 63-yard touchdown.

Johnson caught 56 balls for 863 yards for the Trojans last season. Oregon likes his potential. Consistency was a word wideout coach Junior Adams used as well to describe his game earlier this spring.

Adams said he’ll show up at the facility and find Johnson in the meeting room with fellow newcomer Traeshon Holden going over install at 6:30 a.m.

“He just provides a unique spark on offense. We don’t really have a guy like that who is a little scat guy,” said quarterback Bo Nix. “He does a good job when he gets the ball.”

OT Josh Conerly Jr. looking to improve 'nasty streak' as spring ball draws to a close

There are no stats, no grades, and nothing more than a naked-eye evaluation of Josh Conerly Jr.'s performance at the spring game. Conerly Jr. started at left tackle for the green team, protecting Bo Nix's blindside for the first time in 2023, and it certainly won't be the last.

Oregon's Green vs. Yellow spring game marked the first time Conerly Jr. saw a full game of action at left tackle in his young career as a Duck. Last season, Conerly Jr. was the inline tight end famously used in the "14J package." On the season, Conerly Jr. saw nearly 60 snaps at left tackle, jumping into games when Oregon had secured a victory.

When asked how the spring game went, Conerly Jr. was honest, expressing that it was "Alright," while there were still plenty of things he needed to work on as the season drew one day closer.

In interviews, Conerly Jr. isn't going to sugarcoat it, as when asked how he'll be handling the responsibility of becoming the starting left tackle as a sophomore, he points across the room to No. 10, Nix, and says, "I really just try to play my part, and keep that guy over there upright."

Conerly Jr. continues his honest personality when asked how he looks to improve this offseason.

"I mean really improving, just having a nasty streak," said Conerly Jr. "I feel like a lot of people will tend to say I don't really have that grit and grind."

Read the article to find out what a "nasty streak" is in the latest Madden franchise game...

Bo Nix gives praise to new faces along the offensive line

The highlight of the Oregon Spring Game was the improved defensive unit as they dominated the offense for much of the game, but one group on offense that shined was the line.

There are a lot of new faces along that line and the concern that is associated with that group is warranted. After the game inside Autzen, Oregon quarterback Bo Nix said the concern can be curtailed some.
