    Duck News Hunter Guidelines

--We only want the major news, the 80% of the most important articles and information out there. We spend our 30-40 minute shift bringing in the articles that have the prime information and news.  We will miss some, but what we do is much more than any other site out there. (And ours is for free)

--There will be 25 Oregon sites reporting on the same thing, and we do NOT need redundancy. More is NOT better, so post an article that reports on a news event, and if one is better—replace it, but let’s not have ten articles stating the same thing.

--Does a writer have a different take on a topic that can generate discussion on the OBD forum? Good, post it also in a separate thread, and start the conversation by giving your opinion!

--This is not a money-making entity; thus, our objective is not to provide ALL the articles, but provide the important news and opinions that are relevant to readers of the Our Beloved Ducks forum.

--Remember….More is NOT Better. Avoid redundant articles, and pass on the articles that have a great title, but offer nothing but a babble of blah-blah.  Fewer articles of quality are our goal…we are a forum, not a library. We want participation in the threads.

--The studies done on the Psychology of Choice tells us that when there are too many options available, (articles to read) that often a reader will skip most of them as opposed to reading more when there are fewer choices. And when presented with too many choices--the reader will be more likely to be dissatisfied, and wonder about the articles missed.  Let's make it easy for them!

    When Posting an Article...Ask Yourself...

--Is this IMPORTANT? We just want 80% of the most important, not everything.

--Does it offer insightful commentary?  If so, sure, add it. We want great takes, but not ALL the takes out there.

--Is this article primarily a duplicate of other articles?  Don't post it!

--Clickbait? A great title with a blah-blah article rehashing stuff we astute Oregon fans already know?  Pass on it.

--A priority is sticking to our 30-40 minutes shifts, as we do not want burnout.  It is hard to find help, thus we don't want to lose anyone. Besides, we will have 2.5 hours of shifts per day, and thus we will get the most important 80% of articles posted.  Good!

--Our shifts are anytime between 6:00 AM--8:00 AM PST, (Pennsylvania Duck Group and Apple Green Group) the midday shift at 11:00 AM PST with both groups again, and a final shift at 2:30 PM PST to check for any straggler articles or late news.

--Post the articles in the proper topic thread we have created.  If you believe an article can generate discussion in the forum, then post it in the proper topic thread, but also start a new thread and offer your opinion of the topic to get the discussion started.

--Do create two tabs/pages where you have the News page on the forum open on both. Have the tab on the left set at the "Topic Threads" area so you can access the topic thread links easily in this tab/page. Then with the other page/tab you have on the News page, have it set to your article group you will be searching. (Pennsylvania Duck or Apple Green Group) Now you click on one of the sites to search, find an article, copy the URL, and then go to the left page/tab of the News pages, click on the topic link you wish to place the article in, and then put the article into a post in that thread.

    --How to Copy a URL?

This is about copying a URL (Uniform Resource Locator).  There are two ways you can do this when wanting to copy an article to one of our threads or a separate post.

-First, go to one of the sites, for example, SportSpyder.  You can copy the URL two ways.

First way you can do this is:

    1) Left click on the article title.  This will take you to where the article resides.

    2) Once you are on the site of the article you can click on the address bar/URL section.

    3) This will highlight the URL, then right click to copy.  You can proceed to post the article in one of the designated threads or a separate post.

(As you can see this creates a few steps in order to copy the URL)

Second way you can do this is:

You go to one of the sites, for example, SportSpyder.

    1)  You right click on the title of the article and click on “Copy Link Address”, or it might say “Copy Link.”  Once you do this you are ready to bring this article to the forum.  As you can see this shortens the number of steps you have to take.

This second way is how NJDuck does it!

--To create an article box of the article—copy the URL of the article and paste into an OBD post. Remember, you need a space above the link and below it.  Typically, we use the top couple of lines to introduce the article, or provide a quote, or even offer your opinion. Then jump two spaces, and then put your cursor one space above to place the link.  Thus, a space between your text and the link, and a space below the link.

    image.png

When you post an article, note the text size of the first line and the second line above.

--Use Notepad on PCs or TextEdit on Macs to remove excess code when copying and things get wonky. Look up on YouTube how to add that feature to your dashboard below with icons, and thus can pull it up anytime. Just paste into the Notepad or TextEdit, and then copy it out and it will remove the massive large font, and other annoying things that can occur on occasion with posting.

--Do not post articles from behind a Paywall. If in doubt, copy the URL and place it in an Incognito window and see if the full article comes up.  If it does not, then it is behind a Paywall.

--If you cannot make a shift as a Duck News Hunter volunteer, then please contact NJDuck, (Joe) on the backup list sent to you well in advance of your shift.

--Last year the two FishDuck sites, (FishDuck.com and Our Beloved Ducks forum) served over a quarter million people who returned to the sites on a regular basis.  Your time spent posting articles helps so many thousands of fellow Oregon fans, and we thank you for helping so many enjoy Our Beloved Ducks!
