  1. "Looking for Mayberry"....

The Andy Griffith Mayberry was based on a small town in the Blue Ridge mountains named Mt. Airy. N.C.

The area is offline, but generally between Charlotte, N.C. and Roanoke, VA. The surrounding area has comparatively reasonable costs-of-living. rolling vistas, a mild climate, generally good schools ( do your research), and enjoys steady growth.

Nearby Galax, Virginia is the home of the national Old-Time Fiddler's convention.

I now live in South Carolina. Regarding the South, the past 10 years has brought enormous growth to the more desireable locales and popular cities. Demand for housing since 2019 is off the charts with housing prices responding accordingly.

Where the comparable value is not what it once was, buyers moving from high priced markets in the NW and NE find considerable value and cost savings with huge tax savings here.

There are very low-priced pockets, but buyer beware. We know the economy is squirrely now. Some will score opportunities and some will suffer.

What lifestyle do you want? Are you culturally adaptable,? How much tolerance to risk do you have?

There is more to life than money, but an affordable and well-liked domicile and locale adds a lot. Don't forget access to healthcare as you consider retirement as you will need more doctors and possibly specialized practices than in your younger years.

  2. Nobody has mentioned the magnificent Oregon linebacker group and how the play of the edge rushers and true LB’s will allow the DB’s to feast on deflections, Ill-advised attempts, hurry’s, and badly thrown balls.

I feel like opposing QB’s will have their hands full with fast-changing schemes, stunts, disguises and the flat-out speed, power, and athleticism of the Ducks LB’s.

CB’s and Safeties should look very good and much improved from last season.

  3. Unlimited official visits for recruits will not make college football worse. Unlimited visits changes things. The recruiters and staff will need to adjust to the new environment.

Excellence will require keen pre-visit player evaluations, visit involvement of more staff members, effective time management, and prioritization of tasks.

Accurate assessments of the character, motivations, goals, influencers, and monitoring changes throughout the recruiting cycle are more important than ever with more visits possible.

Those who will benefit most with the increased visits will be those who understand the character and motivations of the prospect before offering an official visit with high confidence the prospect will be signed. Also, the programs that identify weakness and stop investing time and resources into recruits with low probabilities of adding value to the program.

The number of official visits will vary from year to year depending the needs of the team and the quality of the class. It is important that the coach’s time spent on visitors is reasonable and productive.

Winnowing the wheat from the chaff will be more important than ever in recruiting. In business this process is known as qualifying the prospect.  If doubts cannot be satisfied and too many questions remain, then it is better to bail out and move on rather than committing more time and resources to the relationship.

  4. Former Oregon women's softball coach, Mike White, now the Head Coach at Texas  was ejected from a game last month in the BIG12 conference tournament during a game against Oklahoma State.

White, before leaving the playing field, raised his arm and roundly saluted the fans and officials giving them an obscene gesture (the bird). White was reprimanded by the league office.

The episode was replayed this afternoon by ESPN during its telecast of the Texas versus OK State game as White was coaching Texas.

  5. The Ducks are loaded when it comes to President Schill, AD Mullens and staff, boosters, and the football operations and coaching staff. UO Football is commited to winning.

None of us knows how the new era of NIL, the transfer portal and college football alignments and supervision will play out over the coming years. Right now recruiting, especially QB recruiting of 5-star talent, is wide open. NIL money will likely influence the final destination of some top QB's.

I am comfortable now that the UO football leadership will lead the nation as an elite program by making the necessary adjustments to recruit the talent needed to win at the elite level.

It is not clear exactly what that will take as the environment is dynamic and in flux. Factors external to the team such as conference alignments, media contracts with the resulting income, and the goverance of college football play into the futures of QB recruiting and NIL.

One sure thing is that the Supreme Court's decision opening the compensation of NCAA athletes results in long-term changes resembling the compensation of professional athletes. The direction has been set.

How this plays out is yet to be seen.

  6. Former Ducks golfer Aaron Wise finished in second place at the PGA's Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village hosted by Jack Nicholas.

Wise rallied within two on the back nine before Billy Horschel eagled to seal the deal.

Wise collected $1.3M for his finish of (-9).
